PS4 Hardware Troubleshooting / Q&A Thread

My PS4, ordered from amazon, has arrived at my house, but it's technically my birthday present so I won't get it until mid December. Hearing all of these reports about defective consoles, should I test out my console briefly just to make sure it works properly? What do you guys think?

Definetly, test it.

test it..

I'd ask that everyone having issues getting video from the PS4 please try multiple HDMI cables, I have a feeling the one that came with the PS4 is going to be pretty hit-or-miss...

Sucks for everyone that is having issues. I can't stop reading this thread, which doesn't help me with worrying about my console when I get it Monday. :(

more observations:

-flower showed up in my library from the very beginning, but clicking on it does nothing. just makes a noise.
-finding flower on the store shows that i already have it, and no download button

-What's New will randomly take a dump, and then after that i can't get into it for a while. if i highlight it i can't click on it or press down.

-the store must be slammed right now. it was laggy and all my downloads are taking a long time.
-really needs to be a pause button for downloads. it apparently tries to just download all of the games you tell it at once.

im confident most of these will be resolved either by improved load balancing on the network or with firmware updates. im dog tired though, so heading to bed. MODS: let me know if i shouldn't post any OS or software related stuff here.

I believe I have a finicky PS button. It seems to trigger even when I'm nowhere near it. For some reason it happens more when not in game, just in the main OS. Moving around and it'll go back to the main game tile automatically. Started weird, got annoying.

Hmm.

That could be PSN dropping. For some reason mine does the exact same thing and it's usually followed by a PSN maintenance message.

Yes. Don't think twice. Test it. You'll regret it if you don't and end up with a defective one.

Bricked PS4 owners post the location your PS4 was manufactured and the month. I want to see if we could pin this down to just a bad batch. You could find the information on the back.

hongfujin yantai china september 2013. Shipped from Amazon. I see a lot of people with that batch having problems.

Mine crashed in the middle of gameplay.

I had pulsating blue light, and I freaked clean out.

I powered it off by tapping power button, then I tried to turn it on again, nothing. So I powered it off one more time and held the power button for 10 seconds and I got safe mode, and I restarted it.

I feel like I just dodged a bullet, and I'm tempted to just not play again until the firmware is updated.

I know that's what I'm thinking. So what should I test specifically? Just connect it and make sure it turns on properly and runs normally?

Well first I'd plug in the power and HDMI make sure you're getting signal. Then from there I'd update it because those two things are the big issues. Either they don't get signal or people update and bam it dies.

I was downloading an update for warframe, hit the PS button to try to go to friends list. My screen froze, sound went silent and the power button refuses to work..... What should I do?

This thread is getting really derailed. It was started with the purpose of helping people like me who are having issues but i feel like alot of the posts arent being seen

how does everyone plug their ps4 in? i mean the power cord. do you plug it into the ps4 first and then to the outlet? or outlet first and then to ps4?

and do you have the hdmi plugged in before or after the power cord.

Same as the same poster on this page so I copied and pasted it....

Hmm. Sounds like part of these issues could be software related. Interesting. But thanks, I'll do that.

You need to let it update without going to the UI, reset and try again it's not a real issue.

Reboot the console. I think the 1.5 firmware is causing a lot of issues in games that are updating and when people access the media bar at the same time. I think it does it in Netflix, too.

Let warframe install the update without hitting your ps button during that process :)

I'm reading a lot of posters in other threads saying they are happy with how quiet the system is. Mine is silent for about an hour of play, but once the fan kicks in, it is really loud - louder than the ps3 slim by a good margin. I've had no other issues (other than the network issues everyone is having) and just assumed it was normal, but hearing everyone post how quiet the system is has me wondering... Anyone else have a really loud fan?

Someone posted this on the PS support forum:
Possible solution to getting a new replacement ps4 fast.

Report your old PS4 as defective through the orders screen.

Choose standard refund, since you cant replace.

Order a PS4 with free shipping option.

Go to Help, contact support chat.

Tell them how your ps4 is defective and that you purchased a replacement.

Give them the order numbers.

Ask if they will be willing to upgrade your shipping on your new ps4 to one day.

This worked for me. Monday Delivery 4 free.

Mine was extremely loud for the first few hours of play (not even continuous play) but for some reason after that it settled down. I can still hear it, but it's nowhere near as bad as it was.

But yes, quite a few people are reporting the same issue.

GUYS I FOUND A POSSIBLE FIX

My ps4 went into standby mode once or twice with trial and error after 15x of trial and error. But I could not get back into it. So what I did was take out the harddrive turn on the ps4 turn it off put the harddrive back in and turn it on into safe mode and it worked.

Edit: I did the initialize ps4 and it worked and then 5 secs later when i was setting it up it blinked and now im back to the same problem. Its dead now.

I thought the same thing but now think it was actually the blue ray drive. It makes a higher pitched sound than my PS3's one and if it is accessing the disk during a game, you hear a very fan like sound. The moment I quit the game (killzone), the noise just stopped suddenly.

Mine is doing the exact same thing, and is followed by an error message as well. So, I would presume that it's the network dropping. However, I was playing online in BF4, and wasn't kicked out of any games. Only happens on occasion. Didn't happen at all this afternoon. So I presume it's overload. Hopefully this calms down by tomorrow!

Wow, 17 pages.

This makes me really nervous. I'm still a month away from getting my console here in Taiwan, so that gives them a bit more time to sort this shit out, but geez.

What's the perceived failure rate, thus far? How many people here have borked consoles that are completely dead?

Is this looking to be RRoD bad, or is it being blown out of proportion?

Yeah this happened to me, too. But the music was still playing in the background. I just held the button til it powered off. Then I powered it on and it repaired itself and told me not to turn it off incorrectly. Not like I had a choice lol.

But yeah I just let it update after I got done letting it check the hard drive.

Also, is anyone else having problems with sometimes getting kicked back to the first app sometimes when scrolling around? Kind of annoying.

Guess they just need to get the servers stable and fix whatever kinks there are in this firmware.

EDIT: Ah, I just noticed other people talking about it. Glad I'm not alone. Hopefully this gets addressed soon.

Text looks like garbage on my PS4 in 1080p so much so I'm convinced its not actually set in 1080 like it says in the settings. Anyone else experiencing something similar?

See, that's not what I experienced. It was just as loud with no game in the drive.

Lol that's what the hillzone guy did and then it broke again. Don't think this is a reliable fix.

It doesn't look like RROD to me, at least technically, because the systems are appearing DoA or dead within a couple of minutes. There's something screwed up and it has to be very obvious. RROD was a heat issue and this, at least from what I can tell, doesn't seem like that.

Now, in terms of percentage of consoles affected, it could be similar. And that would obviously be very bad. We don't know.

It's tough to say at this point. As a board the best we can offer is that we have this thread to collect data and offer suggestions to try and get members help. I think Sony needs to make a statement soon that they are at least investigating, I believe they know about this.

I'm guessing its a bad batch from Amazon. Yes, my console was DOA. It would not even boot into safe mode with or without hard drive, its either a bad HDMI port or just trashed firmware.

Probably not the right thread but my Dualshock 4 doesn't rumble period at all. I have vibration on in the console settings but it doesn't work in Knack, NFS, AC4, Resogun or Contrast.

So is a pulsating white light an HDMI issue? My HDMI cables seem to plug in all the way and have a click feeling whenever I plug it in. I've tried 2 different cables now and I still get nothing on my TV screen, but the console will be at a white pulsing light.

Anyone remember this guy? http://www.twitch.tv/hi11zones
Spent 20 hours trying to fix his ps4 live on twitch infront of 6,000. His playstation 4 got replaced in a sony store. He is unboxing live now.

He just got told amazon and tacobell ps4's are the braking not ones from other stores. Bad batch. (Information from sony tech representive in denver sony store.)

PS. He released a statemate after neogaf were hating on him saying it was fake:

Epic if it breaks again.

Im using HDMI to DVI and it doesn't let me choose resolution. ONLY 480p. WTF!

I'm having the same problem. I want to hook up my PS4 to my monitor but I can't raise the resolution :/

Edit:

Yea, I've had no problems with my PS4 today. I've been using my own Amazon branded HDMI-to-DVI cable and it's working great.

Also using an Amazon branded Optical Digital cable for the audio and that works great too.

I highly recommend Amazon's branded A/V cables. My PS4 has been working non-stop since 1pm Est this afternoon. No issues on my end.

PSN was running fine earlier today. Of course night came and now millions of people are crashing their servers.

Problem solved, I hope!

....................Every time I think of my broken PS4 I just wanna punch the nearest thing....I could be playing BF4 right now..

I want to punch something since I'm stupid and ran out like an idiot and bought one from Costco and signing up for a membership since Amazon said they wouldn't know when they would get more for replacements... and they still have a BF4 launch bundle one up after 30+ min :/ At least I get Costco's awesome warranty...
