PS4 Hardware Troubleshooting / Q&A Thread

So is a pulsating white light an HDMI issue? My HDMI cables seem to plug in all the way and have a click feeling whenever I plug it in. I've tried 2 different cables now and I still get nothing on my TV screen, but the console will be at a white pulsing light.
If it is white, you are not in Boned Status. See if you can see any metal protrusions in the port.

Add me to the "hongfujin yantai china september 2013. Shipped from Amazon" pile.

Tried the remove HD and boot fix but that didn't work. Can't get to the safe mode either, so time to contact Sony.

Is it possible to login to another PSN account after the initial one? I keep getting "Cannot sign in using another player's sign-in ID."

Sorry if wrong thead.

General censuses is that if you have a pulsating blue light and cannot get into safe mode you've got a defective unit that isn't HDMI related?

Is this information on the back of the actual console itself or the box?

Is it supposed to always be blue? I haven't had any big problems with my PS4 other than loud noise, but that light is always white. I mean, when it boots up it's blue, but after that it turns white. Is that not normal?

My PS4 will arrive monday. This thread is making me nervous. I generally have bad luck with things breaking before they should lol

Sadly yes :/

Ugh, Also count me in for:

Hongfujin Yantai China September 2013

*Edit*

what firmware - 1.0 (Whatever comes preinstalled)
purchased from where - Amazon, Console Only, No bundle
what is your A/V set up like - Tried to 2.1 Soundbar (multiple, HDMI In), Tried straight to TV via HDMI. (Tried 3 different sets, all 1080P)
what resolution do you want to output in - 1080P
were you able to get any video signal or none at all - No signal at all, pulsing blue light, never turned white., Cannot get into safe mode, One Beep then powers off.
can you hear audio - No Audio, No Boot

The two dead ones I've had happen to my two friends, one was GameStop and the other Best Buy, don't think it's a bad batch from Amazon.

It goes Blue -> White. Blue is boot up, then white is regular usage. Orange is standby. Red is overheating.

So, I'm wondering if something didn't screwed up when I booted up the first time. For some reason it made me download the software update twice and then it started crashing shortly after that. I just booted in to safe mode and installed the update from a USB drive and at least so far it's the most stable it's been since I started. Fingers crossed.

Edit: Other differences this time... I'm not using a digital optical audio cable and running wifi instead of wired.

Wow, 17 pages.

This makes me really nervous. I'm still a month away from getting my console here in Taiwan, so that gives them a bit more time to sort this shit out, but geez.

What's the perceived failure rate, thus far? How many people here have borked consoles that are completely dead?

Is this looking to be RRoD bad, or is it being blown out of proportion?

Right now its difficult to tell. Every major forum I frequent is full of these types of posts though, so I have to imagine that the .4% Sony claimed is total BS.

That was in reference to the 4,500 or so units that were out before launch from the Taco Bell promotion / review units. That estimate doesn't apply to launch numbers.

Same here. I've already thought out what to do if mine bricks. :(

I did the usb update, so when I went to plug in my lan connection I just slightly bumped the hdmi and lost video. A wiggle and it was fine, then the cat5 just lying on the hdmi wire killed video again. A little wiggle and it was fine, but after the rush, I'll send it in for service. I'm using a quality hdmi cable, and it "feels" like it's connecting securely.

what firmware? 1.0
purchased from where? Amazon
what is your A/V set up like? Straight to TV (tried 2, Sony SXRD and Samsung LCD). Also tried through receiver.
what resolution do you want to output in? lol, any
were you able to get any video signal or none at all? No video signal. Flashing blue lights. Will not boot into safe mode. Will only turn off by unplugging.
can you hear audio? No

I also just read online about a potential solution involving removing the HD and turning the system on, which supposedly should make it request the HD. You're then supposed to turn it off, put the HD back in, and it should defrag/reformat. That did nothing.
I've been having a really shitty day, and joked to a friend that with the way things have been goings, my system will break once I got home, and plugged it in. Well... I experienced the exact same thing you did :/

I eventually got it to boot, I'm downloading the firmware now, and I hope to god it doesn't die when it reboots :/

Mine's also from Amazon FWIW

I don't see anything in there and the cable appears to go all the way in, here's a picture of it.

Is that far enough?

It was also working just fine until after I downloaded the update and it tried to restart itself, once that happened, I constantly just got a blank screen even though the ps4 keeps showing a white light.

I purchased my PS4 from Amazon:

  1. I turn it on and only the blue strip of light flashes
  2. I can't power it off with the power button i.e. I hold it for 7 seconds and it does not beep or turn off
  3. Haven't been able to turn on system since I opened the box
  4. Plugging in the controller and pressing the PS button only causes the controller to flash white for a couple of seconds then stop

I found I had to hold the button for 10 seconds+before it would try to boot into safe mode and finally fail/power off. Not going to lie, that sounds like it's a sign of a defective unit if it takes so long to even try and reboot.

My friend updated his ps4, after the update he gets a pulsating blue light and can't turn it off with no signal on the tv. He unplugged it and after that he got a signal again, he told me on the phone that after a software update bar filled up to 100% he got the pulsating blue light again with no signal. So any tips for my friend? I'll try to help him tomorrow he went to sleep.

Hongfujin Yantai China is a dead to me!

I seem to have a bad PS4 from this god forsaken land as well. It ran this afternoon for a few hours playing BF4, then went dark. Blinking blue light, no safe mode, no hdd sneak. :/

what firmware? 1.50
purchased from where? Amazon
what is your A/V set up like? HDMI into Toshiba TV
what resolution do you want to output in? 720p
were you able to get any video signal or none at all? Had video when running, not since it went dark.
can you hear audio? Nopes. :(

I don't know. I doubt those review/Taco bell units are an entirely separate batch; especially since its the exact same issues.

Wow, maybe it does have something to do with the firmware? I really don't know anymore. I'm going to bed. What a mess.

My PS4 froze up right after I downloaded and installed the Amazon Prime video app, I tried ejecting the disc, nothing. Then tried to access it via my phone, it says there's no PS4 on. So I held my finger over the power button for maybe 30 seconds, then it beeped and rebooted into Safe Mode. Then it did a recovery, rebooted and has been fine ever since.

Sony really needs to patch the Firmware from 1.5, it's not doing well.

Everytime I insert/eject a disc it sounds like a paper shredder, what sould I do gaf? take it back to best buy? Sony Store? call in a coffin? games are playable, and the console itself is fine, its just maddening. I know I'm luckier than others here, but damn it sucks getting a defective unit.

i recorded it too late but heres pressing the PS button

My two Sony consoles have always had temperamental HDMI handshake issues. My 360 and Directv box will work without any fuss on any monitor, but my PS3 always is fussy and my PS4 had one off issue handshaking with one of my monitors (which works now).

For what it's worth, my Taco Bell PS4 (Hongfujin Yantai China Sept 2013) and it's working fine. Hopefully it's just a firmware issue or HDCP error.

So I've had my PS4 freeze up on me one time. I had downloaded the system update and was watching TV on Amazon Prime when it froze. I held the power button down, and it beeped, but stayed on. No response from holding down the PS button or trying to connect with Vita. Pulled the plug, it rebooted in safe mode and I haven't had any problems since.

Anyone notice the subwoofer being way too loud? On Resogun it's insane. Since I'm in a condo with neighbors on each side I'm screwed lol

Also the audio levels are all over the place between games and apps. I remember PS3 being like this early on and then the sound levels got a bit standardized.

Well after taking all night to relax I finally got through with the chat support after 50 million disconnects. Beat the phone wait which I had of 1 hour and 45 minutes and counting by that point.

Shock shock they suggested the remove HDD and reboot trick and then when I explained that didn't work they offered a coffin.

Got my console today after work and everything booted up and is running fine. Reading this thread scared the crap out of me on my lunch break. Anyway, the resolution setting is set to 1080p and i'm using the same hdmi cable i used for my ps3, but i find that the font in the UI menu, game menu, and psn id avatar are a little low res/pixely?

Yes! I have this issue now too! Didn't have the issue on my tv, but my gf LCD, which incidentally is a Sony Bravia, is having this issue! Really annoying.
