PS4 System Software Preview – USB Music Player, New Home Screen Colors, More

It seems more likely that because Music Unlimited actually generates revenue, the MU team could actually afford to hire programmers to make the app for it, whereas the OS team doesn't generate money quite so directly, so they probably have a comparatively small team of coders who are assigned tasks on a priority basis. I imagine something like DLNA has a comparatively low priority in the grand scheme of things, especially when the MU team had already managed to provide users with custom soundtracks.
But it doesn't turn off in game just plays over music already playing in game so they are bad at this already.

someone pls correct me if im talking from my ass but i dont think this is correct. in my experience your friends can't see videos or screenshots on your activity feed unless they are friends with you on facebook.

that or its bugged as my psn friends have said they can't see my screens or videos if i set it to only me.
Pretty sure you're right. I heard if you post your screenshots as public instead of friends only, then anyone on your ps4 friends list can see it in the activity feed. Not sure though since I never share anything ever.

Okay, this one got me :')

Sounds like we'll get a date in a week.
Don't jinx it!

At least we know it's coming and relatively soon. My hope is that 2.0 is the catalyst for more updates in the near future. I don't want to wait another year for DLNA. I want to see it a few weeks after 2.0 at the maximum.

I was going to bring up him saying that MS is waiting on screenshots to do it right but saying that Sony prioritizing different things is just giving an excuse to Sony, lol.

I like BruiserBear for the most part but it's clear that he is in a frame of mind where MS can do no wrong with the OS and Sony can do no right with it.

Please, go ahead and tell me what Sony is "prioritizing". If it's a lack of features, they're doing a fantastic job.

Have I really changed, or have a lot of people on this forum changed since the launch of these new consoles? I bought them both the day they came out, unlike the vast majority of this forum (as we've seen from polls). I want the best experience possible from both of them. If I complain it's because I care. I don't even enter threads on this forum related to topics I have no interest in. I'm excited about this firmware update hitting the PS4 soon, but my god is it late, and it's still going to be missing a lot. I call it like I see it. It just so happens a lot of people don't like it when you call it like it is with Sony right now.

Quick to call out features missing on PS4 and quick to defend features missing on Xbox.

Because there are dozens of features missing on the PS4 right now. The fact that we're nearly a year out from launch and still missing so many features, in an era when firmware updates are commonplace on every single device we own.

Way too many people here care more about Sony selling the most consoles than they do about them actually delivering a platform that offers a full featured experience in 2014.

The fact that people are even trying to make hay over the screenshot feature not being on the XB1 says it all. It's basically the last feature it doesn't have at this point. It's the only nit left to pick. Meanwhile people are conversing about what background color they're finally going to choose on their PS4 when firmware 2.0 hits. A year after launch and background color is a bullet point.

I hadn't been paying close attention to the XBox One firmware stuff, so how is background color and themes looking on it? Didn't realize it already had those options.

I'm relatively new to my xbox (about a month now), but I'm pretty sure there aren't themes or backgrounds. There are tile colour options though, and more of them than we will be getting as background colours for firmware 2.0 for PS4. They look pretty nice. The background colour behind the tiles stays black, regardless of tile colour.

Has Sony mentioned whether we can choose background images for the PS4? Or, will it just be pre-made themes and the different coloured stock backgrounds?

Why can't PS4 download a game update WHEN IT IS INSTALLING THE GAME

every freaking game I play

install game

launch game

see download start

close game wait for patch

then install patch

restart game

SO DUMB

It comes down to the nextgen consoles' philosophy of letting you play a game immediately. Its either do it this way, or force you to wait for the patch to install when you launch the game as the PS3 did

This method just lets you play the game pre-patch immediately after its been installed...but I think most close down the game when the patch starts and wait anyway

I've got like 120 gigs of videos that are getting dumped directly to youtube as soon as this drops.

Thank fuckin finally GOD

Also - i'm about to get share-couched by almost every single friend i've ever made since high school. I can just feel it

So if I want to make a screenshot of something with major spoilers for a gaf thread I can automatically spoil everyone on my friend's list?

What a great way to kill servers.

Without previewing it first or adding a text comment?

Say what you will about ps4 video recording but the screen shot setup is about as perfect as I can envision it. If my xbone does exactly that I'll be happy.

Could it be they don't want screen shots at all of tv or something and are working out where and when to allow it?

All you have to do on PS4 is hit the share button, take screenshot, choose Facebook or Twitter (I upload to FB with privacy settings as "Only Me" so nobody on my FB friends list sees it but I can still share it online) and it will upload and be shared on your activity feed with friends.

Takes about 10 seconds to do what you describe as the right way to do it.

How the hell did you people miss the fact that I pretty much just repeated BruiserBear's post about the screenshot feature? :)

I hadn't been paying close attention to the XBox One firmware stuff, so how is background color and themes looking on it? Didn't realize it already had those options.

And background music playback apparently..

I don't see how xbox can get screenshots working perfectly. They don't have any specific button they can use for it. Voice will have a lag associated, as will any double tap home button + key macro. So for still scenes that will be fine but not fit anything requiring a quick reaction.

And it doesn't matter anyway. The only reason people in this thread are even brining that up is because others can't resist mentioning how many bloody updates MS are doing. So what? Can't we just talk about the PS4 software without constant comparison all the times?

Xbox one OS is looking nice now, but it was pretty messed up at launch. It is still missing screenshots and background audio playback as key features. Once it has those anything else starts to be gravy really, but it isn't there yet.

Yes PS4 is behind in some aspects but it isn't nearly as crippled as some people make it sound.

What? You kind of defeat your argument here. I care more about taking screenshots than being able to change my background color..

PS4 is missing a lot of features I agree. However I disagree that firmware updates are commonplace. Sure there will be plenty of updates to fix problems but as far as adding new features well you typically only see 1 or 2 a year at best for most products. Apple and Google certainly only do major updates yearly.

The only thing Sony has ever promised when it comes to firmware updates is Suspend Resume. Everything else has been community input and request. The standard functionality of all promised features out of the box, the playstation already has.

It's so annoying that if Sony isn't exactly jumping off rooftops to promote firmware updates to things they don't want to promise, it's assumed they aren't doing anything. I recognize they could have more transparency but as of right now, if they want to keep things tight so people expectations aren't running rampant and they start to over promise on things just to one up a competitor, then let them do that. It's either wait or leave.

The PlayStation as of right now works and doing what is intended. All that other stuff will come. These constant debates on what other want only proves exactly the reason why they keep it under locks.

Funnily enough, major updates on any device we own are always yearly. The Xbox is generally the only one that does monthly updates. iOS, neither Android or mostly any device for that matter does monthly major updates.

They've been saying that they're working on Xbox Screenshot functionality forever but I don't get what is taking them so damn long.

I suspect it's taking a while because when they do screenshots they're going to do it right.

perhaps updating the OS isn't as easy as all of us think it is...

Both Sony and MS seem to have different priority lists, and MS is definitely more the expert in software updates.

This just comes off as excuse making for Sony.

I just want to remind everyone that this was in the same post.

These two replies. In the same post.

Yeah. I was explaining why one console didn't have a screenshot function yet, when it already has just about every other feature under the sun.

The person I replied to was attempting to argue away all of the PS4's missing features with a "software is hard", and "different priorities" wave of the hand.

As if they're the exact same thing Chubigans.

Besides suspend & resume, and notifications when a player is online, what are these "ever other feature under the sun"?

USB Tracks cannot be ripped to the hard drive?

Was this available on PS3 or were only cd's able to be ripped?

Pretty sure you can?

You can certainly download MP3's from PSN occasionally.. definitely rip them from discs.

I really imagine you could transfer them to/from USB sticks and even memory cards.

So if Sony takes too long, they aren't listening, incompetent and anyone who doesn't see that is making excuses.

Microsoft also takes long, but instead they are making sure they are doing it right. There's no date, or time, when screenshots function is going to come, the only thing we know is that it's coming.... But they are making sure it's right.

Ok.

The fact that you are mentioning background color and ignoring themes says everything.

So nobody should mention screenshots or themes, because XB1 can pause downloads? Or play as you download, or play as you install.. or remote play... or share play.

They are all irelavant, stupid, laggy, pointless features. We get it.

Am I the only one that couldn't careless about features. I use a gaming console to play games and to watch Netflix that's it. I personally would love all extra resources To go to devs to make better games. Main reason I don't own a x1 is all the none gaming stuff.

I'm not about to go on listing everything, but you can certainly do your own research if you're interested in finding out what the other guys have. Needless to say, even the things the PS4 has, are done better on XB1.

Just one example. Both consoles can stream to Twitch. But the XB1 has a native Twitch app that allows you to watch any Twitch content, including your subscriptions. The XB1 will also notify you when any friend begins streaming.

Based on what we've seen from both companies, I would say one company has earned the benefit of the doubt, and the other has not. Do you disagree?

"Do it right" argument could use on PS4 missing feature too.
DLNA, MP3 etc all available on PS3, it's not like they don't know how to to do it.
Maybe for security reason or prevent piracy?

Not only does Microsoft have beta testers on updates a month in advance, they let the customers vote on most wanted features. You can't compare MS OS support to Sony

agreed. They promised a game console not a "everything in one" console or a "it only does everything" console.

it seems to me they are putting priority on aspects that make it a better game console not a media center.

the media center stuff will come with time but I'm more excited for awesome ideas like share play than DNLA which mostly a small percent of power users (although vocal) are asking for.

True but what he says isn't that unbelievable considering MS runs circles around Sony in this department. If they're working on something for screenshots you can pretty much assume it'll have more functionality than the PS4's 'hold a button and save to your HDD'.

Well;but MS shouldn't be praised for doing what is considered basic. Same when sony decided against drm. They were being praised but, in my eyes, they weren't doing nothing out of this world.

Ms runs circles around Sony in OS department not cause they're geniuses, but because Sony is being extremely obtuse. How fucking hard can it be to let me store media in the HDD? it's not rocket science, just another instance where the ps4 gets outclassed even by last gen consoles. with such a huge ram allocation it boggles my mind how the OS is still so barebones a year after launch.

I was curious at what major features - like i mentioned i know of suspend/resume and notifications. I personally don't consider apps major differentiator.

Obviously this is wrong and I don't have to own an Xbox One to know but keep digging deeper on generalizations thrown out there to appear as "facts". The IMO is always missing......

Just one example: Pre-ordering, pre-loading clock. There are more I am sure but like you said about the Xbox One - if you want to know all the list of features of the PS4, and which ones it does better than the competition, then inform yourself and do a little digging. It's just a waste of time since it serves no purpose - other than console warrior status am I rite?

Generalizations and selective cherry picking, coupled with a tint of conjecture makes for some ridiculous statements.

What is the doubt?

People were questioning why I was giving Microsoft a pass on screenshots.

I was speaking in generalizations there.

There are a few things the PS4 does better, and I've acknowledged that on this very forum before. I love the patch notes for example, and I love how the audio is muted through HDMI the moment I plug in my headset into the DS4. I certainly don't need to be informed of the PS4 feature set. I've probably logged hundreds of hours on mine.

If Xbox One already has almost every other feature under the sun, and they are expert at software, why have it taken them over a year to get the screenshot feature right? :P I think priorities has a part to do with it.

I'm guessing it has more to do with the lack of a share button on the joypad itself. The guide menu shortcut for "Xbox Record That" is fine as the video is constantly being recorded and isn't time sensitive. For the screenshots they need something that is instant, whilst not interfering with any potential inputs a game may be using.

The actual functionality for screenshots is probably not too much of an issue, as screenshots of apps can be taken for update preview feedback.

"Do it right" argument could use on PS4 missing feature too.
DLNA, MP3 etc all available on PS3, it's not like they don't know how to to do it.
Maybe for security reason or prevent piracy?

I'd like to see someone make the case for how that would be applied to pausing downloads or friend notifications.. which happen to be the two features they get the most shit about.

I hope share play work well so I could let competent gaffer finish some of my driveclub challenges.

Considering that you'd be streaming the video to them, and they'd have input lag. I'm not sure how much use people will be when it comes to helping with a racing game. When I tried Dirt 3 through OnLive it was pretty much unplayable.
