PS4 Update 4.5 is coming tomorrow, details inside

Guess I'm gonna try out Bloodborne tomorrow. Hoping it's a noticeable improvement because god damn that game feels awful to play.

Umm... I've got some bad news for you. The changes to BB are very minor. Mostly it loads a bit faster and and now rarely/never drops frames below 30 but it doesn't do anything to fix the frame pacing issue which is what causing that game to feel "awful to play".

Judging by some of the reviews, these tend to die pretty quick..that is why Im thinking about getting Western Digital..Ive had two seagate drives die on me throughout the years

Damn, I was going to buy the same one, I guess I'll wait to see what a reliable external HDD is for a few months

Yeah I mean if I had to choose between that one and this one WDBYFT0040BBK-WESN I would go with Western Digital just am not sure about the whole USB powered thing can the PS4 handle it..I know with the XBOX ONE I was told repeatedly that it cant handle USB powered drives, that it will overload the console and take all the power from it so I have no clue I want to be totally sure before ordering anything

I bought that one because of a GAF thread.

I'm mad.

No No, I mean most likely your drive is fine, try it out, worse comes to worse you return it..I am trying to get this drive https://www.bhphotovideo.com/sitem/sku=1277275&et=1489003056432&is=REG&m=Y price matched through staples..no harm in trying this drive I hope that it works.I talked to someone online who has this drive and they love it..some seagates are good..for example the expansion drive that I have for my XBOX ONE is awesome but I just wanted something smaller..and the noise it makes in the middle of the night downloading updates is a real pain so wanted something different

That is the one I want to buy..but its USB powered..been told different things about USB powered drives and the PS4..so I want to be totally sure the PS4 can handle ONLY usb powered before I buy it..I can get this drive price matched through staples plus I have a coupon so want to order the drive today..the desktop version of this same drive has mixed reviews so thats why I dont think I will bother with it
I've been running Horizon Zero Dawn through a USB powered 3.0 drive since it launched (in the beta) and had 0 issues with it. It's a 2 GB laptop sized Western Digital drive.

I currently have a 6tb HD attached to my pro internally that's over half full but what I'd love to know is if I shift that drive to external and put the original 1tb back in and install the firmware on it, will it see everything installed on the 6tb drive?

Where did you find a 6 tb drive that can fit into the PS4???

You'll probably have to move the games first, then unplug the external and use the backup feature on your now "empty" internal drive to save it to a second external. Swap out the internal to the SSD, re-install the OS using the official method, and then restore the backup to it.

If all goes well you should be able to plug the external back in and have it resync'd with the system.

Thanks, but do you think it is worth it? Should i just used the SSD externally? Is there a significant speed difference between the an internal SSD and an external SSD.

Very happy about Boost Mode. I'd eventually love to see a list with every single game affected and specific performance changes.

Has anyone posted the best external HDD to get in preparation for this update?

Edit: Nevermind, just had to read some of the earlier posts...

I ordered the drive will be arriving in a few days cant wait to get it..question..when I get the drive do I have to format it on my PC first or just plug it into the back of the PS4 PRO and let it format it for me

The PS4 has to format it. It needs to set up the file system so that it can be used as external storage. It also needs to be directly plugged into the PS4, not through a hub. You have a Pro, so that isn't as much of a problem for you. Since I still have a launch PS4, I need a hub to use my Sony Gold, PSVR and the external, but the PSVR works fine on a hub, as do any HDD I want to use to play movies. (I have an Amazon basics powered USB 3.0 hub now.)

Great..cause I know these hard drives always come with annoying bloatware(Because they assume you will be using the drive on your PC and not a console) so I just plug it into the back of the PS4 PRO(While the PS4 PRO is turned on I assume, with the XBOX ONE they recommended you plugging it in BEFORE you turn on the console) then go and let the PS4 format it(Will it be formatted to exfat or something like that allowing more than 4GB of storage)

Noob question but are external hard drives more prone to crap out compared to internal ones? I have this external hd and I wonder if I should use it but I am kind of scared that it will crap out in a year or so because of constant use.

And will there be any performance issues with an external drive?

It's not March 9th.

I've had an internal 4TB drive installed for almost 2yrs now with no issues. I'm actually running out of room and I'm glad to hear an external is an option when the time comes.

My usb powered drives work fine on my xb1 and ps4

IIRC I plugged it in after the PS4 was turned on. I'm pretty sure it uses exfat, but I'm not certain because I didn't plug it into a PC to find out. It does allow you to move the games to another PS4 as long as you log in with your account. I didn't get to test this feature, but it was mentioned on the Beta forums.

Do we have a resource on the best value for external hard drives to pair with PS4 now? I just need lot of space and I'm not concerned with performance as I plan to transfer games to my internal SSD before I play them.

Anyone know if it's possible to have games create saves on the internal hdd and install/update to the external without manually moving them?
