I don't understand xbox fans mind. Don't want pay for games but think it is ok to pay $31 for an upgrade to play a game 5 days early you don't own. Wtf
Tbh, back then I was frequenting the other forum which we don't speak about :p. Needless to say I was pretty hyped for FH5 since I loved previous FH entries, and while reading the OT for early impressions there were like dozens upon dozens of people who were subbed to GP and decided to get the premium DLC to play the game a week early lol. Almost did that myself, but then I thought it's just stupid FOMO and I can actually wait till it normally releases a week later in Game Pass.

If you stop subbing to GP then your premium upgrade is useless until you sub again. Stupid to buy DLC or addons for games tied to a subscription, imo. Just buy it or don't.

Disagree for some people, and here's why: if you have a long term gamepass sub or plan to keep it for a long time, it's smarter to wait to buy the full game when it's $20. Will save you $50 in the long run.

How is the UWP modding scene these days? Can we mess with the executable for a game? Or injections. Do we even get access to the game's folders, for starters, because I clearly remember Microsoft not letting us in?

I'm not going to lose mod support in a new Bethesda singleplayer RPG, over a few dollars I can save. If I wanted to go that route, I'll just download the game from my Gamepass sub, and call it a day.

Its not totally stupid because you may be able to get the base game later for cheap
I mean, buying the DLC now and later buying the game will still get you access to the DLC content you would lose after unsubbing.

Or, buy the upgrade and play on gamepass now. Then pick up the game on a sale down the line if you let subscription expire.

I'm in no rush. But it's a good option for people who want it early and not looking to make bad analogies.

That's fair. I think that would make more sense for people like J jorgejjvr who are paid up in advance for months/years. For someone paying month to month then I think it makes more sense to just buy it. They could unsubscribe from GP while they are playing which would recoup the cost.

Are more Xbox first party games coming with this early access bullshit?

I thought we paid for Gamepass ultimate, it is our entitlement! We do not want to pay on top of GPU...

Yeah but just give it to me, I'm already giving you 15 dollars a month for the privlege of renting it. Why on earth am I giving you more money to access additional content I lose if I stop subscribing?
Because that’s the business model. DLC is great additional revenue for GamePass and it probably keeps those that purchase DLC retained to the service longer.

In Canada, at my current wage, this costs approximately 2 hours of working. I cannot imagine dedicating two hours of my finite life just to get a game, of which we know little, a few days early, along with the promise of one future “expansion” for a game we may not even be playing by the time it is released.

Kind of like buying new tires for a rental car to me. Not going to tell you what to do with you money though. For me, if I'm going to pay cash then I'm going to own the whole thing.

Not the same thing, though you can always buy the base game for much cheaper down the line.

If you have Gamepass for some years, it’s probably cheaper in the long run to pay for the DLC, then pick up the game down the line for much lower than $70.

Outright purchase is obviously better if you’re an intermittent subscriber.

I don’t see myself being out of a GP or PS Plus sub until 2028 so…

It's definitely a cheeky way to get subs to pay, and I think it's smart, and worth it for me. I played the Forza dlc, and this also includes future dlc. Just a lot easier for me to spend $31 on a game I really like, and still support it in some way, without paying $70, $80, $100 upfront. Part of me likes I can still support some of my favorite games without paying full price

It’s not your money. Why on earth do you care what others do with theirs? Don’t buy it or sub if you don’t see the value, and let others decide for themselves.
It is a forum and if u don't like opinions well here we have a lot of them include yours. For me is a stupid idea to pay for an upgrade on a rent.

Bro Sony already revoked the liscense for hundreds of purchased films in Germany and Austria.

Sure there would be a lawsuit if you got a lawyer silly enough to take a case that would be immediately thrown out of court. Every time you blow through the, "I accept the relevant terms and agreements," when you click 'Buy' you agree to a contract that grants you a liscense to use the software that can be revoked at any time for any reason.

I get what you are saying, but that was such a small number of affected people that it probably wasn't worth a lawsuit. Put this in proper context. If MS or Sony revoked license on one of their video games then all hell would break loose and yes, lawsuits would be filed and no, I don't think for a second they would be thrown out. Those terms and conditions are only as good as the judge who validates or invalidates them. Like I said, I don't think this is anything these corporations wanted to be tested on in a court of law for that exact reason.

They did this with Forza as well. Gamepass subs are fine and dandy for the players, but you don't fund massive AAA games with just sub numbers alone. Options for converting GP subscribes to positive margin streams is how they create additional revenue. So far this option has only been used with first party titles as well (afaik).

Yep, exactly, happy to help a bit in funding some of my favorite games. $31 isn't as big of a sticker shock like $100. I'm happy to pay to upgrade, get more content, and help on backing this game. I think it's pretty smart on their part

I don't understand [insert brand name] fans mind. Let others pay for the premium upgrade they want to, it's not like it takes away their ability to buy the game in the future if they want to. Wtf.

I did this for FH5, wanted to play early and the promise of expansions and other perks was more than enough. If I ever want to buy the game I’ll get it on a deep sale later. For Starfield I have no desire to play it early and Bethesda dlc isn’t a selling point either. I still like the option though.

Jeez $31 is not that bad if it’s something you’re really eager to get your hands on + you’re sure you’ll want to get the future DLC anyway.

That’s less than it costs to buy my family a crappy dinner at McDonald’s.

Yes, it seems like a good deal, especially if you are already on GPU.

People are tying this to GamePass but it precedes GamePass. Lots of publishers have been doing this for years, including MS and Sony. This is just an easy way to make some extra money on top of subs. And if you’re subscribed to GamePass for a long time into the future, it’s a smart move to buy this upgrade and then down the road get the game dirt cheap.

The whole irony is that it's such a garbage thing that it has caused me to buy all their games on Steam or at least whichever ones I considered buying. I thought about doing game pass but for the reasons that have been outlined, Microsoft's efforts on PC with the launcher or so poor that is rather just buy the game outright on Steam.

The early access launches at 8PM on the 31st (Thursday) here (Eastern US) so no need to take that, but I'm probably gonna get a little sick and need a sick day on Friday the next day too :messenger_grinning_sweat:

I meant the following week, but I also have Friday off so the point stands. Alas I am taking a weekend trip in there, but there's always the game pass cloud.

What a crazy new money trap! Pay $31 for something you don't own. $31 + gamepass to rent a game for 6 days.

Yeah. You could actually wait for the game to come down in price and play the subscription.

Still, you may end up paying more waiting for that. That is the problem with subscriptions.

The advantage with subscriptions is that you are not paying as much each month while bringing in income.

Also, with the subscription, you don't really own anything. That is the kicker.

This is hardly news, can get a cd key even cheaper elsewhere too

"But if you stop subbing you lose the game! Stupid!" By that time you can pick up a key for the game and actually buy it if you care that much and it will still be cheaper than buying the full premium at launch
Thats the plan. By mid next year when my sub ends, im grabbing the standard edition at a discount, lies of p and whatever else ms throws into gamepass. Possibly during the spring sale.

If you plan on getting the base game down the road and you are currently subscribed to GP, it’s not a bad idea.

The premium upgrades include access to the first story DLC.

For reference, the Far Harbor story DLC launched at $25.
But why own the DLC if you don't own the game? I guess you could pick it up for super cheap a year or so down the line but I'll just play it on the 6th. Those first players are going to be quality control anyway.

Why own the DLC ? to play it why else ... It's a weird argument, people who want to play the DLC would need to buy it irrespective of if the game is on game pass or not.

I have game pass till 2026, I'm not planning to skip any DLC and if I don't want to resub in 2026 I can just get the game for cheap then and still have access to that DLC without buying it again.

I got Metro Exodus EE's DLC when the game was on game pass, and after it got taken off of game pass, I just got the game for $5 separately and I still own all the DLC.
