PSN connection problems (12/24)

I just wanna play BF4 :(

Well, Sony has been gunned down for a month. Pictures and now an ongoing DDoS attack to PSN. Yes, Sony as an organization was hit tremendously harder.

They are all separated and probably all servers are split within a lot of other things, but the fact that from many people involved in this ridiculous DDOS attack kept repeating that they stop "specifically" hitting PSN..means one thing. There was more than just a Lizardsquad hitting Sony.
The Korea stuff is not applicable here.

Managed to get signed in to the account management side of the website insanely quick, and had no problems adding funds. This success did not carry over to the store side of things.

The Korea stuff is not applicable here.

How is it not?

I'm not relating the Korea incident to what is going on at this moment but relating it to how high Sony as of lat has been a target.

Korea is it's own situation, but this isn't the first that some of these wanna be hackers and hackers a like attacked Sony and they by no means where small attacks. They have always been larger than any other company out there. So what is the real issue?

Sony was never given any type of light attack at any point. And no matter how large they are, people still think Sony can fix this with a flick of their thumb.

oh lord, i think everyone collectively rolled their eyes at this post. this is like blaming a store owner for getting robbed instead of the thieves. grow up

Why? If a store got robbed, it is up to them to put a notice on the door and inform their customers. And if they are still closed after 4 days, it is entirely their own fault for mismanaging this event.

But hey, here are some tips and tricks for your new Vita!

I updated the first post with some information that ThirdMartini posted in this post in the Lizard Squad thread.

Sony/PSN is using prolexic for DDOS mitigation.

At this moment all auth requests are being blackholed behind prolexics servers. There could be several reasons for this.
* The auth server going offline on Sony's side.
* The auth server being overloaded
* Prolexic actively filtering traffic because of an ongoing attack.
* Some problem at prolexic (perhaps they can't handle the load either)

PSN also uses Amazon EC2 for their applications/multiplayer servers. And Akamai for game downloads, updates, firmware, etc. EC2 and Akamai also seems to be stable and explains why folks can get downloads and even play Online ( if they managed to login ) since those services are running in EC2 or over Akamais CDN.

When snooping traffic it's clear that the auth server is responding sporadically... and sometimes not at all. Which implies that it is at least alive but struggling.

It should also be noted that when a DDOS mitigation is done by first attempting to filter out offending traffic based on content... when that fails (IE: the attack is sophisticated enough) IP ranges begin to be blackholed altogether. This causes some regions to appear completely offline while others are fine. Those filters are then refined to allow legitimate users in. (Assuming the mitigation service is not overloaded). This is never perfect and extremely time consuming. ( BTW Mitigation services are EXPENSIVE ) To say Sony is not spending enough on infrastructure is a bit presumptuous.

The real problem is zombied edge devices. My little itybitty server in the corner of the internet gets 10s of thousands of hits from zombied IPs a day looking for vulnerabilities in my server. 1/2 the time I look it's from a Cheap wireless router that's been rooted and has an open telnet/ssh port or botnet client on it. ( It's so tempting rm -rf / and then burn the flash out on those things to kill them!! ) So it's not just infected enduser PCs anymore... it's all the cheap, insecure other crap people buy and plug into their internet connection. For all I know many of the folks here are running zombies without even knowing it and contributing to the problem. Perhaps while waiting for Sony to get PSN up and running folks should go see if their own gear has been compromised. :O

Thanks to ThirdMartini for this explanation.

At this point, you are just angry you can't even see how ridiculous this looks.

If a store got robbed, yes, it will take more than 4 days for it to be up and running.

Stock needs to be recounted. Police reports need to be made and investigated. If windows was smashed, those need to be replaced. If vital technology was taken, those have to be ordered and replaced.

It's not as simple as, well a few things was taken but we are back in business.

For example, none of those shop owners in Ferguson is going to have their business back up and running in 2 days.

Please stop

I'm... angry? I don't even have time to play..
I have every right to voice my opinion about how I feel they have mishandled the situation. It's ridiculous that it takes them this long to recover from the attack.

It is ridiculous that they don't even feel the need to talk about it on the PS Blog.

I wasn't the one to start with the robbed store analogy.

I can't believe people are defending them over this. It's one thing to see them as the victim here, it's another to start bashing people that are being critical.

How long do I have to wait before I can start complaining? Should we give them 7 days of downtime?

I could play ~3h Destiny on PS4. My mistake was to try change character, after that game booted me away.

I do get PSN error message, if I don't get PSN error msg, I get to this point:
After selecting character, comes this error.

Time to take some beer & w(h)ine.

So I posted a bit in the other thread about the ongoing sale but figured I'd post it here.

I got onto the store earlier very briefly and Alien Isolation was 35% off with an additional 10% discount for plus. Got kicked out and when I went back later it had dropped to $29.99 and a full 50% off.

Its possible they are offering better discounts once the store comes back online.

It's Sony's business to keep their network secure (the network we now pay for). DDOS attack is hardly a new thing and it's definitely not a new thing to Sony yet they are still falling for it. So, yeah, Sony should absolutely be called out for this as it's been ongoing for days and days now.

They deserve every bit of it. It has been down for almost 4 days now.

I also believe that Sony deserves some the flack. Part of the attack was to show how weak these services are that we pay for. I hate that the hackers (yes they are hackers) did this, and I hate that Sony has proven to be incompetent in resolving the situation in a timely manner.

Called out, yeah. But the hyperbole of them deserving to lose all their customers is a bit much.

IMO, they should be doing a better job all around. I lost a shitload of gaming time this weekend that I'd been looking forward to for a month. I don't blame Sony. I blame lizard.

Xmas is a huge time for consoles sales and playing games. If Sony can have a secure xmas is very fucked.

And 3 days down is too much no matter when.

I agree.

Somebody update me. My network turned back on earlier, played for 2 hours. I've eaten my dinner, returned 3 hours later and it's all gone to pot again??? Has something happened

If Sony came with a in depth article as to what problems there are and what they are doing. I doubt many will be as pissed as they are.

Kind of related, I'm selling my old PS4 to a friend, but I can't get online to deactivate it. It looks like I can use 'Deactivate All' from Sony Entertainment Network's Account Management, but are there any other problems I'll have to deal with after doing that beyond needing to reactivate a psp, vita and ps3? Anyone have any experience with this?

Wow, this is simply amazing. One of the biggest companies in the world. And it is down for what, three days? I'm not an it guy, but what is it that take so long to fix?

Embrace dat online only/digital future console folks!!

Seriously, this sucks for PS4 users. Unacceptable the network has been
down this long irregardless of attacks or not.

The Korea stuff has nothing to do with this and shouldn't lead you to think Sony was especially targeted here.

You have every right to complain at this very moment. You're just directing the complaints at the wrong party.

Spot on. Just share some information. NOT sharing just feels sketchy.

This happens all the time though. Companies don't want to share what is wrong with their network and why it's completely down (especially when it's been three days).

I can't play FIFA online so meh. I'm slightly irritated but not throwing a hissy fit over it. That said, I understand the frustration of people trying to play games like Destiny though.

when our company is hit with Ddos, its up in a day. I know we aint got as much traffic as Sony, but still we are a huge company with a big online presence for online betting.

Sony needs to step up the game.

Well I don't know who said that. But at the end of the day it's Sony we have a contract with to provide us with network services so the buck stops with them.

Im pretty sure Sonys shareholders would like an explanation why Sony is losing millions of dollars per day due to PSN not being accessible. In fact, they have a legal right to this information.

They deserve every bit of it. It has been down for almost 4 days now.
And do you know why, exactly? I mean, you say they deserve it so you obviously have some inside info otherwise no sane, rational, logical individual would claim justification without all of the facts, right?

So spill the beans. Throw some knowledge down. Enlighten everyone as to every little detail you obviously know so we can join you in your just disgust and ridicule!

Yeah no. We don't know what's happening behind closed doors so we can't pass judgement yet. For all we know they are still being attacked and if you've been paying attention the botnet hasnt been easing up on attacks yet.

When we get any concrete news that justifies ridicule then so be it. Enough with this fucking victim blaming until the dust settles, people.

This is seriously getting annoying. I can't even play AC: Unity single player properly. Can't start some SP missions, can't access initiate chests, can't get Ubi rewards...

Actually, it is the lack of information that justifies ridicule.

It would be easier to forgive them if Microsoft also didn't fix their online issues (for the most part), but they did.. in a day. This is day 3 for most who can't play.

What if we replaced Sony with Comcast(or any ISP). Would people still be saying 'give them some slack guys, theyre doing their best.'
