Don't worry, a few thousand dollars missing from a bank account isn't such a big deal.

He uses his credit card. Which normally wouldn't pull funds from your bank account and has a limit + its own security measures.

I haven't changed anything yet myself, I'll just check in on my debit card every now and then and see how it goes.

I've had money taken from past acc's fraudulently before and the bank has refunded me anyway.

It's nightmarish for Sony. You think their stockholders are going to just be like "thems the breaks" if it effects their earnings from their online service significantly? LOL

Also, I don't think that every online service is completely secure HOWEVER I can recognize that Xbox Live hasn't had this issue so it's clearly MORE secure than PSN. It doesn't have to be completely foolproof to be the better choice just more secure than the other option. You get it?

You seem to make alot of bold statements but it is alot of pissing in the wind.
Sony stockholders are used to weathering storms, and they will deal with this.
As I said previously, this is no BP situation and BP is doing just fine.
You say that Live (or online service X) is clearly more secure? Is it or it that it has not been a target of someone as determined yet?
There is a reason that network security is huge these days.
Every online service out there will be looking very closely at their networks in the coming weeks.

Same here. Not a thing changed...not even passwords.

We can be control subjects together...and kiss...and hold hands...and all that stuff.

Finally got an email from Sony about it. Goddamn, what a fuck up on their part, and I hope the hacker(s) get found and prosecuted.

Hopefully this means that Sony will completely overhaul their security, and it will be a lot safer going forward. Still, this is making me much more wary of stuff like this for all of these kinds of accounts.

I don't think so. I'm still checking my debit card account frequently though, just in case.
Someone a few pages back said they had some fraudulent charges from portugal. However, who knows if that is a coincidence or not.

When PSN goes back up and is more secure than ever and we all receive our "free" gift for being patient, this will all be forgotten about by the time summer rolls around.

You can take that to the bank.

I just feel sad and uncomfortable right now.

I mean, I went around and changed the passwords to everything I could think of and I've been checking my credit card regularly and everything is okay at the moment.

Can i just get to sleep now, I mean I shouldn't really be worrying too much right?

-you should only change the passwords that are the same as your PSN password. i personally would advise that on those accounts that share the same password as PSN that you also change the security questions, if any. that way if the hacker(s) know(s) your mom's maiden name now, you can change it to childhood best friend or whatever. :p

-i wouldn't go overboard on checking your bank account. it usually takes a few days for a charge to go in, and finish processing, so you'll be able to spot something and catch it if it were to come down to that. make sure to contact sony FIRST if a fraudulent charge comes up so that you can put your official "i think mine was compromised" statement in with them. otherwise your bank will take all the action first and block sony. this happened to me a while back when someone got into my paypal and sent themselves a bunch of money. paypal got blocked from investigating and tracking down the hacker because my bank acted first and fucked up the trail he/she left behind. (if any)

everything will work out man. worrying solves nothing. trust me, i have severe anxiety problems. think of the worst that could happen. (you dying) now think of how ridiculous it is that this whole debacle could somehow physically kill you. that's what i do to make myself feel better.

You're most likely right and right now Sony is praying that you are...

Yeah, I'm done with this thread until later today.

Big day tomorrow. Sleep time. I hope you enjoyed my Sonic collection.

Sweet dreams. I hope all is resolved.

The hacking could also be used to blackmail people. Let's say someone had been watching porn on their PS3 through optical media, or streaming from PS3 Server. I'm sure Sony logs those kinda things, for marketing purposes, etc. Hackers/blackmailers can make a fortune on such things.

After that whole Gizmodo business a while back, I changed all my passwords so that each is unique. Unless I'm forgetting something, my PSN password was for that account only. I don't think I ever used it for anything else.

Should I worry about entering passwords using the PS3 web browser?

Make no mistake. Sony will be negatively impacted on all front.

But if they continue to deliver quality stuff, then some people may continue to do business with them. I will continue to shop on PSN because of LBP2, Uncharted, KillZone, PixelJunk, ThatGameCompany, Hulu Plus, etc...

But their PSN needs a hefty beef up in every way to counter the negative tide. They can't be just good enough, they may have to shine. Playstation Suite will bring an interesting PSN client side angle, Steam will also bring an interesting partnership angle, but the actual server applications and operation need to impress or be impeccable.

It's a tall order because I think the hackers will attack Sony again. I hope the authorities are more ready this time.

How can you blackmail people because they watch porn? This is getting silly.

you can't put a price on sparks
you shouldnt worry too much, credit card companies are usually aware of stuff like this happening, and if there is a possibility of all the cc numbers being compromised, they'll just reissue credit/debit cards.

unfortunately identity theft happens more often than you think and even if you dont think you've been compromised, you may have already been without actually knowing.

i know my information has probably been compromised as a result of this and a couple of other events in the past. so :(

Lost all credibility.
Here's a Chris Hansen special about identity theft:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58_y30O1fR4

Pretty scary stuff. According to the special, people sell personal info on IRC chat for miniscule amounts of money. In the special it ended up being Nigerians. What they do is form a fake online romantic relationship with a lonely American, then buy stuff online with the stolen CC info and have it sent to the American, then the American sends the stuff to Nigeria. All the while the patsy has no idea they're taking part in identity theft.

Every online service out there will be looking very closely at their networks in the coming weeks.

It's worse than BP if people start getting fraudulent charges on their cards. If anything trumps destroying the environment, it's fucking with peoples money.

As for the thing about Live, it doesn't matter straight up. Perception is king and Live will be perceived as more secure because of this and justly so. Once they get hacked you can come back and call me an asshole.

And yes there is a reason network security is huge today...to prevent things like this. There's also a reason that getting hacked on such a colossal scale is huge these days.

Every online service will be looking hard at their online security because they don't want to get hit with the negative PR and loss of consumer confidence that Sony will get from this.

I'm sure the stockholders will just consider this minor. After all, why would people in a financial market care about financially related security issues?

Oh really?

Go read the new thread made asking people what they are going to do when PSN comes back up.

The consensus is--go about your business as usual.

OK, here's what's pissing me off. I have no idea what my PSN password is, still, I want to now change my Amazon password just to be safe. But every time I try to get into amazon's account settings, it freezes up and fucks up my whole net connection along with it. Not sure if it's related or how, just very annoying and paranoia inducing.

Good news everyone!

Thanks to the fact that I shared my account with a friend back in December (which prompted me to remove my CC numbers, btw) I have now confirmed that I've also changed my password to a generic one ("password") and haven't changed it ever since. So all that is left to do is change my PSN password as soon as the service is up. I won't even have to go to on a password-changing spree like I when the Gawker database was hacked. I'm glad I dodged this bullet.

See, game sharing isn't so bad after all.

No email from Sony yet. I used a credit card a couple of years ago and I'm hoping it was purged from the system. Just in case I changed my passwords on about 4 different sites. I'm hoping I'm in the clear.

Oh, its not unheard of. They threaten to contact your wife or your workplace. Very old trick.

A whole other aspect, is the privacy issue. Loads of people have unlisted/hidden private home-address, for varying reasons. I could see some heavy lawsuits coming along, if this information leaked.

Oh nice.

Hey, you mind telling me the email you use for PSN? I just want to email you some stuff:)

sure is. dissolved 2 of my past relationships. i have no idea why my current girlfriend puts up with me, but she does. it's also hard to quit smoking if you have a lot of anxiety. i only resort to them if i am having an attack or something. so maybe one or two a month over the last 9 months.

what im going to do is just sit tight, check the PS blog a few times a day and my bank account once a day (which i already do) and if sony comes back with a bad verdict on CC's then i'll go through the appropriate steps to protect myself. then when PSN is back up i imagine we'll have to reset passwords and security questions. it could be worse.
