System Firmware Version 2.50 is Out!

We got a news tip just minutes ago from a guy called Niklas saying that the 2.50 firmware update was now available via the “Network Update” feature on the PSP. As of now, we do not have the details as to what changes are included in the update, but we naturally have a large hunch that it is mostly security fixes to further strengthen the PSP against running homebrew.

We are guessing that the 2.01 update was a ‘hotfix’ to clear the exploitable toc2rta libtiff exploit in the PSP’s photo viewer. Expect this 2.50 fix to be a more stable wall against letting hackers run homebrew applications and games on their PSPs in many ways. On the other hand, it's easy to speculate that 2.50 could be easier to hack than 2.01 now that copyright video can be played on a memory stick, and the location free player has been added. Those two programs could open up potentially exploitable loopholes. Expect future games to require the 2.50 update to play, and the rest of the usual hubbub we’ve seen with previous security patches.

We are currently uploading the 2.50 eboot file to our server, as well as working on adding pictures to this post. We will be investigating the exact changes in this update and will update this post the moment information is available - so stay tuned as Sony tries to strengthen it’s grip on homebrewers.

UPDATE: Preliminary changelog translation is in:

FEATURES INCLUDE:
- Location Free Player has been added for streaming TV (this does not remove the region lock for UMDs)
- Auto Select and Uni Code have been added to encoding in browser
- Text size and display mode can be saved in browser
- Input history in browser can be saved
- Copyright Video can now be played under mem stick
- Set via internet (time and date off the net)
- WPA AND PSK have been added to network setting
- Korean input on keyboard

I'm suprised that they've included the Location Free TV support so soon. I thought that they'd wait til' sometime close to the PS3 launch to release it. It's really cool tech if you can afford the required base unit.

I can never get my psp to detect my wireless connection. Anyone got tips to help me out?

The little switch on the left side of the system, maybe? That's the Microsoft Tech Support first response anyway..

I have a feeling his problem is a bit more complicated than that. Network issue perhaps. I'd like to help if I could, but I can't unfortunately. :(

:lol

It will detect the network, but it never connects. Some kind of error like 085PWNED or some shit. I tried it at work too, to see if it would tie into the mall's wireless, and the same problem... detection, but no connection.

The only time I've gotten an error was if the signal was really weak. Could that be the problem? Also, try turning off the WLAN power save option.

anyone know when/if Sony will include a longer lasting battery with the PSP's?

They just revealed the new PSP battery in Japan that gives 20% more life. It's 50 bucks, though. Not sure what comes after, or when we'll see it in the US.

Hey, wow, Stringer's keynote at CEATEC wasn't all hot air...

Really encouraging to see how quickly Sony is broadly expanding the PSP capabilities with these firmware updates. Now just make 3.0 the update where you let legitimate hombrew coders legitimately put their apps on MSDuo and all will be well.

That would leave all the PSP hackers without anything todo, then they might have to get a Job :lol

so - who is going to be the first person to get a basestation for streaming Japanese TV?

Also - i assume you need to be within a wireless lan enabled area to watch the streamed TV?

"a bit off topic, but how do these location free base station work? do you plug your TV feed into them?"

yup - live feed goes into the base station, the base station transmits it over the web, you view when you have a wireless connection (i think)

Not sure if it has the function to sit and encode each program into nice downloadable MP4 files for the PSP - i'd assume maybe it does (?)

I'm feeling this might be handy during the world cup...

i suggested this when the PSP launched, but ...

why not set up "Sony TV" for access in major population areas?

Have adverts, tv shorts, and area specific adverts.

"Show your PSP at Raj Mahal for a 5% discount on food TODAY!"
etc etc...

"You are in shibuya! It's Thursday - here are some videos of the hot new PSP titles that came out today!

*show games*

your nearest stores are here here and here!
Bic Camera have a 10% off if you buy three titles deal!"

Advertising revenue would be obscene, people would use it on the train on the way into these areas and whilst wandering about/waiting for people.

in the menu, switch from "autodetect" to a single standart. that solved the problems for me (note, your gaming partners have to do that to!)

I will stay put with my v2.0-->V1.5 firmware.
Emu heavens.

I need another webbrowser for my psp (tenchi browser sucks = the webpage refresh or goes back to the main index screen with no reason (GAF)

When are they going to include the webbrowser from v2.0 in v1.5???? (@hackers)????

Shit. Who knows were I can download 2.00? I'm trying everywhere but all Im getting is dead links and 'new' 2.01 crap.*

*Just got a psp yesterday

I asked about location free TV ages ago.

If PSP can stream, I'd upgrade my firmware in a heartbeat. Get a base station in my in-laws house, (and get them broadband), then my missus can watch fuji TV in Windsor :)

DCharlie, you know what must be done :P

Genius.

It streams any TV if you have the base station at your home. I've seen those unit being sold here as well (US and Canada).

So, who's updating? :)
They're getting close to convincing me, but getting the most out of this update requires a $350 purchase of a Location free base station. I'm interested to try it, but the reviews have been lukewarm, so I'll wait till the price comes down and perhaps release a revision of the concept.

The Japanese box is nice, but I wouldn't mind a PAL version to watch European TV as I live in Japan... Anyone seen EU version announced?

No European one just yet. But if they come out, do you want to do a swap? I'd love for my wife to be able to watch Japanese TV over here (UK) You can even have a freeview box to yourself :)

edit - THIS may do the trick for you - converts PAL to NTSC, so you could use a Japanese transmitter and PSP..

Indeed, it is bloody brilliant DCharlie. Then again, in defense of Sony wasting away time on the PSPs potential before Apple steals the limelight, it's not like Sony owns any movies or TV shows. *rolls*

yes indeed Vince - but they've owned that sort of content for years (although interestingly enough they specifically bought creators of small segment pieces from Germany and other european countries) it's all nice bite sized content! It might fit this scenario. If they do something with it, then it's going to be awesome - but will they? With Stringer at the helm it might actually happen... here's hoping anyways. This time they might have someone at the helm whole stick the pieces of the jigsaw together.

Yeah, the price isn't great - and you still need to be near a wireless hotspot (unless i'm missing something) which isn't ideal in Tokyo (surprisingly). Then again - during the world cup - this thing is going to be priceless when in the office for the games :)

... i now have a quandry - my PSP 1.5 UMD drive died (and it's not like i've been using the UMD drive at all!! (The sony hater curse strikes again huh?)) although then again i may not need to ever use it. But now i can down grade my 2.0 White to 1.5... or upgrade and try out the 2.5 with base station.

Then again, i could just buy another white / black one i guess.

This cracked me up, but only because I imagined a ninja-style roll.

...so does this mean people should be able to set up TV portals? Or are there harsh usage limits on these boxes

It depends. Sling Media, which also makes a device that lets you view your TV anywhere with a broadband connection, limits the box to one connection at a time on top of a required unique login ID generated by their system.

There would be lawsuits scary enough to make the RIAA look tame if these measures weren't in place.

I’m sorry I still don’t get it. Are you guys telling me that I can watch SportsCenter or HBO live from anywhere in the world by using my Satellite feed from my house by using my PSP?
