PSP 7.1 Surround - has anyone ever tested it?

One of the things touted about the PSP hardware was its capacity to put out a 7.1 surround signal. Has anyone here ever tried it out?

Honestly, I don't know how you would even try. There's only so many seperate channels you can pump out of a standard headphone jack.

That's what boggles me, too. Why put the tech in there/tout the tech if you can't access it?

Maybe they're just talking capability as in "our hardware could do this if we wanted to, it has the power to do so, but instead we're using that power for other things, like in-game on-the-fly MP3 reading/decoding from the Memory Stick."

Guys, I remember 7.1 being one of the things they cut out of the PSP spec...... You sure you aren't reading an old press release or something?

They announced 7.1 in 2003's "Shit, tell them it's got a time machine in it too!" announcement.

7.1 on a handheld is a kinda dumb idea. I know about so-called surround headphones, but that seems like such a niche device that it's not worth it. Add it to the fact that there's be no reason to ever hook your PSP up to your home theater, and I can see why it was axed.

They quietly withdrew it some time before release. Showed it once at E3 on the specs and never mentioned it again. I recall people talking about it on the board. Not that it would be properly utilized anyway.

Oh man, classic thread for all the DS sucks because it's not online talk.

But ah, that does explain it.

Yeah, i thought it was pulled too. In any case, Dolby's got headphone surround technology, but the PSP doesn't use it.

If you're referring to Dolby Headphone, then I believe a few UMD movies such as Total Recall have already implemented this on PSP.
