Why hasn't there been a golf game announced for DS? The analog swing of Tiger Woods will look primitive compared to a stylus-based swing.

The shortage centered on JP launch I think, and in that regard (if SCEI really is intent on a 2004 launch) I think they might be right. Just like PS2 though, the western launches should have plenty of content.

It'll come down to exactly what games are having to be pushed back. GT4 at launch is something that should definetly happen. They need some really big hitters from the start. I do wonder if Sony would be willing to delay it for a couple of months to get a bigger launch library going or if they'll just send it out with what they have (which might not be bad depending on exactly what's being pushed back).

Remember back when the first DS game was announced, and it was that Ultimate Games collection of classic card and table games? It sounded almost embarrassing at the time, but now that we know the DS' capabilities it sounds perfect.

Plus it's not a shortage of titles in development, it's a shortage of games that will be ready to go at launch. Big difference.

If it's still 2004 for Japan, GT4mobile definitely won't make it. The game's extremely early and not just a direct GT4 port from what I understand... I think a summer 2005 launch is likely for it at earliest.

For a 2004 launch, I'm expecting probably one of SCEI's new games or maybe two (HSG would be a great launch killer app in place of GT4), DarkStalkers from Capcom, Dynasty Warriors from Koei, Ridge Racer from Namco and probably some throwaway puzzle and mahjong games. That would be good enough imo.

Will RR actually be able to make it? When I first saw it the game looked like it was going to be a RR Compilation but NAMCO later said it was going to be completely new. I'd love to see it but if GT4 can't make it I can't see that one either.

A new HSG would be great for Sony same for Dynasty Warriors. I think Sony will pull off a good launch, they just need to make sure that they have the lineup in place so that there's a good stream of games coming out and no big gaps between them. This isn't like with the PS2 where they had an installed fanbase so they could have a decent gap in between releases at first with no real consequences.

RRV was thrown together in something insane like 4-5 months (and on nightmareish early PS2 SDKs at that). I think the PSP game will probably make launch, it's tradition after all. :)

Plus a lot more work goes into GT in comparison to Ridge Racer. And with PD finishing up GT4 proper, I'm not sure they're too concerned with the mobile version right now.

Yep, those two should be the killer app launch games.

For that to happen, they really need to delay into spring 2005. Which might happen anyway actually.

Think Nintendo will sew up Dynasty Warriors at launch too?
Probably, though the DS game is said to be more strategy focused (probably like DW4 Empires) while the PSP game is a direct translation of the regular PS2 slash 'em ups.

The DS is going to cost Nintendo and others way more resources than the GBA/PSP if its all orginal titles. I wonder if Nintendo will allow companies to port games over with little or no use of the second screen.

Nintendo already said they're not mandating content use every feature on DS, including dual screens. They're leaving it completely open to developers.

castlevania and new super mario brothers really don't belong on ds. i've faithfully shelled out for three sub-sotn castlevania games on gba, and now that psp finally presents an opportunity to do a portable castlevania that exceeds sotn in every way, they're giving us RADICALLY ACCESSIBLE TOUCHSCREEN MENUS instead. what a swizz. ditto on flooding the gba with every conceivable old mario game, and then putting the new one on ds.

and you know what'd be neat? if clap hanz ripped off camelot's mario golf gb concept for psp minna no golf. they've ripped off everything else camelot have done; one more can't hurt. rpg structure + superior mng mechanics + lots of 3d courses = best portable game EVER.

Er, expcept that DS is also higher spec than PS1 and could concievably deliver "better in every way than SotN" Castlevania also. Besides, I'd worry about a PSP CV following in LOI's footsteps given their comparable technology.

This one is sort of a blow, especially as Tezuka promised an original GBA Mario platformer once Merio 3 wrapped up. :/

Yep. It'd be even better if SCEA didn't substitute their wacky character designs as well. Not the the original JP models are that great, but at least they're not offensive. :/

Well, it is 3D. Or 2.5D. Or whatever the kids call it. I guess people have been asking for that. I don't know.

Anyway, the DS needs the development support and the major franchises right now, moreso than the GBA. Surely you understand the logic there. Yes, it would have been nice if the GBA lineup at E3 was a little beefier. But between the two of them the DS needs to have the impact. Nintendo doesn't need to make as big an impression with their GBA lineup anymore.

resolution? soundtrack? ds castlevania certainly wouldn't approach sotn in those respects. i don't know how big ds' carts are, but storage space might limit graphic variety as well.

and there's no guarantee that the ds castlevania will be 2d. or for that matter that it'll be an action game - i recall reading somewhere that igarashi found the ds unsuitable for action games. might have been exxy who said so on this forum.

and yeah, scea's hot shots characters are awful. which brings to mind my least favorite thing about psp - the territory lockout.

edit: i understand why focusing on the ds rather than the gba is good for nintendo, but it certainly isn't good for me.

Mama Smurf

My penis is still intact.
Is Castlevania confirmed? Isn't that the game where the creator supposedly said he didn't undertsand how the DS would work for games but he was making a Castlevania anyway, only then we found he actually said he'd make one when he figured out how to take advantage of the DS?

That was certainly true for one game, I think it was Castelvania. And if he's never convinced of the DS's advantages, we may never see one.

JJConrad

Sucks at viral marketing
I'm wondering how many of these games have actually been shown or even really exsist. Many of these games seem to be just a company's standard list of franchises used to make the lists look bigger.

Games like Tony Hawk, or Madden and... well... the rest of EA's lineup appear on just about every platform availible. Does anyone believe that these games won't continue doing the same?

Great list, Jarrod!

...the DS lineup seems to have massive potential, and if Nintendo launches it in the US before Christmas with enough hardware, the number of projects should grow bigtime having proved it a viable system...

resolution?
Well true, but I'm not sure what resolution SotN ran at anyway. I'd guess Mode 1 (320x240) which really isn't that far off from each DS screen (256 x 192). And combined, the DS screens have more real estate actually (though vertical).

drohne said:

Well really, we're uncertain of DS's overall sound capabilities right now. Outside the fact that it's capable of 16 sound channels (compared to PS1's 24). Still, the ARM7 could be dedicated entirely to sound if KCET wanted, there's felxibility in the design. I think a potential Castlevania DS could certianly outshine SotN in terms of audio.

drohne said:

1 Gbit minimum (128MB). Looking at GBA, the minimum cart is 4MB, with games reaching 32MB now. So in 3 years with a similar progress scale, we could see DS cards that hold twice as much as a CD.

drohne said:

Both true as well, though really there's no reason why Konami could've manage a "better than SotN" Castlevania on DS if they wanted. The hardware's there for it.

Yes, though later he admitted he was actually working on a DS Castlevania.

Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles on the DS makes more sense than the Gamecube version did. You could use the first screen for all the action and the second screen for menus. Go Go Nintendo!

The PSP has more of my attention right now, but both of those lists are HAWT. I don't even have time to name all the games on that list I would buy on release. A new Super Mario Bros...Castlevania...Ridge Racer..GT4 Mobile...Viewtiful Joe, the list just goes on and on. This is finally a generation of handheld games that I care about.

And I can lan hookup with other people on the DS or use my wi-fi and not have people over in my room playing. Then I would enjoy FF:CC a little more.

At the moment, PSP seems to have the better list of games imo. Can't wait for it.

Wish Square would throw some support behind it. :(

DS interests me more, from a hardware standpoint, and clearly from a software standpoint. I like me my Mario.

I know it's not a game but "Talkman" really interests me. Hopefully it'll be robust enough that it'll elevate it from the gimmick perspective to being useful.

I'll be suprised if half of the games announced for either platform will actually be developed. I'm pretty skeptical at this point.

But isn't part of the point that each person has exclusive information? Which played in such a way wouldn't be able to be shared?

As for now, the DS looks more interesting, the PSP launch reminds me too much of the 1st year of the ps2.

What are Buzz and Nintendogs ??

I hope both Namco DS projects get mixed and enhanced, because they do not deserve more than a rent as for now.

All launch games are unknown right now (except Hudson said Ren-Goku would be a PSP launch game). We'll probably have a better idea of what's coming when in September.
