PSP external hdd

hay guys!
Upon browsing other psp forums i found this:
http://apacer.com/apacer_english/product_html/share_steno_cd211.asp
External hdd with built on lcd display, comes bare or with hdd inside. Some places are selling it bundled with a 40GB hdd for about $120, and it supposedly works.

GOT THE SHARE STENO CD211 ......
It works guys...the first thing you got to do is format the steno to fat32.... ntf doesn't work at all...so format to fat 32....i used partition magic to format it to fat32....after that you could select and transfer your file to the psp...
my first transfer was two mp3s to the psp...
the steno interface is kinda difficult but once you figure it out its easy...

another alternative for people with 1.0gb duos and ipod is possibly this:
http://www.macally.com/spec/usb/input_device/tablets.html
it seems like a usb to usb file transfer device only drawbacks is that now you'll need to lug around not only the ipod and psp but also this contraption (although its small) and slow being that its usb 1.1 host but supports usb 2.0 devices, but apparently cheap as an article, http://peripherals.engadget.com/entry/1234000470038939/
says that its going to be like $50
it should work since ipod and psp work like standard usb devices for the most part.

the steno sounds pretty appealing.

If I can get a mini-HD that works with the PSP that has like 10 GB and is small enough, all my problems would instantly be solved and the PSP would never leave my side again.

Sounds like it's just a network-drive-style thing where it pretends to be a PC so you can transfer files to the memory stick. Useless.

Sounds annoying... I'd much rather have one unit which encompasses a big storage solution. It's probably not as bad as I think, but it reads like you'd have to carry these seperate things around in your pocket and then build them like freaking lego to do a transfer. If there was a way they could cram something into the size of a memory stick for example, and effectively read/transfer on the fly, that'd be hot. But then, it might as well just be a big memory stick. I guess I'm just put off by the components and wires... this looks like it'd be something you'd be more likely to tend to before going out as opposed to while you're out.

Good heads up though... I didn't know things like this existed :p

steno spec/size
128mm x 78mm x 24mm
psp:
170mm x 74mm x 23mm

eh? ehh!? :)

Yeah, that's basically what it is - a portable hard drive with USB2.0 host compatibility. You still need a memory stick big enough to hold the file to transfer. All this is basically doing is acting like a portable PC for file transfers.

This will be awesome when they make a HDD with a memstick duo as an interface/transfer cable...

in fact, would it be possible to make a cable that had a memstick at one end and have that memstick pretend the hard drive was the memstick?

Sounds clunky as hell. I guess if you were going on some extended trip and didn't have a laptop it could work.

I doubt it would be as simple as a cable to translate the signal, but I'm guessing it might be possible in some ungainly matter...unless the PSP requires magicgate. Then there is no chance whatsoever.

Datel already kicked magicgate in the teeth

What's the deal with MagicGate? Supposedly unexploitable?

Edit: Regarding this hdd? Lame.

Sort of. AFAIK you can only get around it with either driver patching or the chipset package Datel has developed, but what isn't clear about the latter is if it's even adaptable to a non PS2 memory card device.

So, if you did have a USB host compatible HD, it's then in the realm of imagination that somebody could put together a device that bypasses magicgate, emulates memory stick hardware (right down to the interface, which I don't think I've seen yet), and runs hardware translation to make the whole HD visible. It's a big plate for essentially a "cable" device, and it introduces all sorts of problems, like how the hell to do all of that and keep it portable, relatively inexpensive, and not needing it's own power source.
