PSP: Firmware 2.6 out.

How kickass (and easy) would it be for Sony to implement this kind of browser into the PS3? With RSS, Keyboard and mouse support, Wifi, using the 2Gig Pro Duo stick as a HD. That would really be a big step in taking over the living room. A device that does HD movies, games and true internet browsing would be a trifecta.

I'd say (and have been saying) it's almost a foregone conclusion. This isn't the first time that Sony has used this interface - it showed up in the PSX first. Kutaragi has expressed intent previously to continue using the XMB interface in future products. For the PS3 not to be at least as feature rich as a portable device SCE released more than a year before it would be a tremendous misstep.

Although, using a 2gig memstick as an HD on the PS3 would be a stretch. Not nearly enough space for high definition entertainment media. Good as a stopgap perhaps, but not for long.

However, I am beginning to suspect that the PS3 will likely be the ultimate media manager for the PSP.

More importantly, there should be a screen capture function, so we can snap our best moments against one another online, and pop open the browser to post the pics or crushing victories and defeats here on GAF :P

Is it possible to stream your .MP3 collection over WiFi via RSS? What kind of software do I need?
There's a homebrew app that does that (doesn't require RSS though, I don't think), assuming you still have a 1.5 PSP.

http://www.globware.com/psphomebrew_wifijukebox.php

But you could accomplish something similar in conjunction with firmware 2.6 if you set up a web server on your PC that has your music collection and then generated an RSS file for that collection.

Holy shit guys, PSP KILLER APP AM HERE: GAF finally works with the PSP browser! :D

I don't know if that is old, sorry if so, but I've never been able to access GAF previously. Shit, now I can get a quick late night GAF fix before bed. :) Man, the PSP suddenly gained so much more usefulness for me today, heh.

Anyway, yeah Wollan, here are a few (and btw, if you come to this thread from the PSP browser that GameSpot XML will work, at least it did for me):

1UP's podcast:
http://www.1up.com/flat/Podcasts/podcasts.xml

PC Gamer's podcast (really good, laid back yet reletively professional, and good developer interviews each episode):
http://feed.pcgamerpodcast.com/

Major Nelson's podcast (one of the heads of the Xbox.com/Live side of things, he does come off very PR-ish, but a nice guy, and certainly worth listening to. [I won his contest before, too! ;) ]):
http://feeds.feedburner.com/MajorNelsonblogcast

Cheap Ass Gamer's podcast (if you're a CAG it's worth a listen. Cheapy D seems like a really cool guy):
http://www.cheapassgamer.com/podcast/cagcast.xml

This Week in Tech (very good if you're into technology and the sort):
http://leo.am/podcasts/twit

Diggnation (drunken wrap up of the top news stories on Digg.com):
http://revision3.com/diggnation/feed/high.mp3.xml

Cinecast (intelligent, critical film talk):
http://feeds.feedburner.com/cinecast

Just jump in this thread from your PSP and you can save all of them in one clean swoop.

*edit: added a few more

WOW!! Thanks for those links. I'm new to the whole RSS scene, but now I'm going to be all into it thanks to the links provided at GAF.

The new, higher capacity battery is out in Japan. You can order it from Playasia or other such places.

When I can buy a Giga Everlasting Pak here in the states, I'll bite. Till then, I'll pick up loco roco when it comes out and maybe one or two others that could be a itch to find and enjoy my DS.

It would be rather amusing to setup a web server on your desktop that would stream audio to the psp via rss or some other trickery in the web browser. I'm sure it won't be too long till someone sets up something or finds some software that already does exactly that.

Not much to do, really. There are a number of web servers you could install on a PC, and you could build the RSS file in a text editor. Ideally, would be nice to have an automated tool to build that RSS file based on specifying the path to your music library, but that's also a routine you could probably write in minutes using a number of exisiting programs. The DIY version in this case doesn't seem too difficult to put together.

Yes. Personally I'm not really sure whether 20% extra capacity is worth $60, especially when external battery packs can be had much cheaper.

It's not, really. But it's nice to get a bit more power without adding something else to carry sometimes, and the external bricks have been really hit or miss in the quality department. The one irritating thing thus far is the PSP itself isn't so hot at battery life calculation once you use it (I'd like to think it's improving, but it's hard to say).

If I had to recommend a battery solution right now I'd probably go with the charger case, but that's not quite pocketable. I'm hoping that icel charger turns out.

WOW that sounds like an advertisement for the GAF.

I refuse to lose my EMUs!

QFT. I don't care about the PSP's media functionality, I bought the thing to play games. I was hoping to play both PSP games and emulated games, but since Sony decided to force users to decide between one or the other with their mandatory firmware updates on games, I'll choose emus and ignore UMD software. There's no way the PSP's library is ever going to compare to the libraries of virtually every console up to the 16-bit era.

If you want pure pocket gaming emulation, than snatch this...

I feel sorry for you, seriously stop living in the past and move on. Or get another PSP if having emu's on a portable is that important to you.

how is the d-pad on that thing? looks similar to the neo-geo pocket (a good thing^^)

I dunno.... I love EMUs, but my main reason for staying at 1.5 with my PSP is fastloader. Running games off the memstick and pushing the PSP to 333mhz (like god intended it to be) are to awsome to give up.

Well legal reasons aside, you can still play both the latest UMD games as well as emus on a 2.0 system.

Thanks! I need to keep up with the PSP homebrew scene more closely...I knew there was a downgrader, but I thought I'd have to downgrade/upgrade constantly to go back and forth between UMD and homebrew software. Just setting the displayed version in a program is a hell of a lot easier.

I was thinking making it a bit more complicated and having some html interface to control the playlist would be nice as well. It very well could already exist since it'd be useful for other things, but it would also be very sweet for the psp.

Of course, Sony will provide said software next month for $20. :D

2.6 firmware brings with it support for 480x270 video off MSDuo, finally. But, only for copyright-protected videos.

http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000990070303/

I wonder who's doing the encrypting for this, whether Sony is the only one doing it or whether they have opened it up to other content providers to encrypt their content independently. Hopefully the latter, putting us a few steps closer to legit software downloads and run from memstick by non-Sony sources.

Actually, I'm surprised that that a vaio media player isn't available for wireless streaming yet. It even has location free support, with 100x less users!

I found this site that may be helpful for those wanting to set up a home server and RSS file so that you may have access to your music collection with your PSP. Link is below.

http://www.lifehacker.com/software/feature/how-to-set-up-a-personal-home-web-server-124212.php

I haven't tried it myself, since I lack a wireless network at home (not to mention that it sounds a bit intimidating for one who has flunked Geek101 ;) ). However, I thought that it may be appreciated for those of you who upgraded to the 2.6 firmware.

Check this link out guys. It's got all types of RSS feeds listed that you can play on your PSP. Enjoy! :D

RSS Feeds for your Sony PSP

You can't view them directly on the PSP, though. The site has an application that will convert the feeds to images, which can then be displayed on a PSP. It would probably be easier to use a rss-to-html script, at least until Sony adds direct support for text feeds.

Hey, this is pretty awesome. I never really got into podcasts before because it was too inconvenient to transfer crap to my iRiver every single update. But thanks to PSP Firmware 2.6, I can get my 'podcast' on anytime I feel like it!

Thanks Sony!
