PSP hacked already ?

some guy I know claimes that the PSP games can be downloaded illegally and then dcopied to the PSP's Memory Stick ...

is that true ?

I doubt this is true but this could be possible in the future. Perhaps You could copy an entire umd to your computer via the usb connection.

I highly doubt the solid state memory sticks have a read speed slower than the 128 kilobytes per second read speed of the PSP's UMD drive. :lol

On a related note, i seriously hate people that blatantly lie about things like this. i remember a guy who said his new Xbox had a DVD-R drive and he could burn discs with it. Really, what do you have to gain by it?

For the respect and admiration of the people foolish enough to believe him. I've gotten used to it. People lie all the time and it's easy to see through it when you spend as much time browsing game forums as I do.

Can PSP run executable code from the memory stick? It would be one stupifyingly bad mistake if Sony let that happen.

Yup. Straight out of the main menu, though I'd imagine some sort of digital signature would be required.

There is an option for "Game" with a memory stick icon. Assumedly for games/apps downloaded to the memory stick..

So yes, Sony seems to be allowing executable code from the mem. stick

Didn't Sony demo games on the PSP running off the Memory Stick (to reduce loading times?). So I'd say that's definitely possible.

The PSP needs to get cracked fast, simply because I want some damn emulators on this puppy.

NES/SNES/Genny/MAME at least please.

AFAIK, the PSP can't run executable code from the memory stick. Which... sucks for the homebrew scene.

Why wouldn't it though? What would be the point of the game off memory stick option then? Code would have to be stored and executed off there in theory.

UMD can only transfer at up to 11Mbps. Standard Pro Duo sticks transfer at up to 15Mbps, and High Speed Pro Duo sticks transfer at up to 80Mbps. It still seems unknown how fast the PSP can transfer to/from memory sticks, though; I've heard it's only 10Mbps (which would be crippling), but it seems like most people don't care enough to look into it.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I was hoping PSP would be the first portable (with a good control layout, too, unlike Pocket PC/Palm devices) to be able to play MAME and SNES/Genesis at perfect speeds. ;_;

Remember that leaked firmware update that was going around a few weeks back? Some people actually ran the thing from the PSP's main menu. Of course, they practically ruined their units, but...you can do something from the memory stick.

I've also heard rumors that developers are being encouraged to use the memory stick as a data cache to reduce load times.

Aren't they gonna bring downloadable demos in the future though? Or at least they should offer them

I'm just a recalling a conversation I had with a friend who's a developer on that ATV PSP launch game. When he told me you can't run executable code off memory stick, my heart broke into pieces.

WHAT THE?!? That can't be right.... That's not even fast enough for a decent quality 480x272 MPEG 4 video to run off of!

When you get only six hours of sleep in 48 hours, and are as gullible a bastard as I am, you can get made to say shit like this. I'm an idiot. :lol

Sleep is good man, sleep is good.

Now I'm curious though, what is the transfer speed range of the UMD drive?

11 Mbps. I felt something was wrong when I typed 128 KBps, so I looked it up. :lol

And it's already posted in this thread.

I'm taking bets on this, but i'm pretty sure they opened it up. When they said lets put a memory card in this and allow it to connect to a computer. No less this should be easy. Once we get downloadable content it has to tell the game that its there. So i'm sure hacks and get around will be made soon.

But this isnt the first time i've heard about this. Might be true, my cousin (comp science/main programer for UVG) was telling me about the units they got and how easy it was to program from. But we'll see..

In all seriousness, there are going to be a LOT of disappointed PSP owners if Emus and other homebrew softs never emerge for it.

I'll be mighty disappointed, for sure.

but it plays games! and music! and movies!

actually, i'd like to place my bet on some sort of memory exploit from the duo being the first crack in the armor

The Xbox has Military Grade Super Secure 64bit keys which are held in underground dungeons and protected by dragons (also military grade).

The Xbox cannot run non MS signed code off CD, DVD, the HDD, or the Memory card.

...

Oh wait, this was all before a $5 chip just skipped that part.

Don't worry about the PSP's keys that only Sony has. Someone will just take the lock out, rather than pick it.

Wait, so there's no emu's on the horizon? Damn it. Say it ain't so. This is seriously causing me to reconsider a PSP purchase. People were saying for weeks that emus would be coming and it became one of the main selling points for me. The launch games look great but shucks.... I'm disappointed.

Like Burger says, it's just a matter of someone bypassing Sony's security. The PSP is designed to execute code off the memory stick, but only code trusted by the PSP. There'll be a workaround sooner or later, and thanks to the upgradeability of the PSP, it may be possible to do it without a chip (but they'll probably be able to detect this in software later -_-;)

Playing games, music, and video, in addition to image viewing isn't enough for you? :)

Tapwave Zodiac, anyone? :) Got mine arriving today or tomorrow, hopefully. A Palm device with 3D acceleration, rumble, decent sound, and a nice analogue stick. Doomed as a games console, great for homebrew.

AFAIK code can run from mem stick. Devs I've talked to just haven't been given instructions about how to do it. Early PSP dev kits didn't even support that feature.

ooo - i remember Lyte showing me his Zodiac...

what emu's are out and how are they?

Snes? MD?

I have a GP32 already, is it worth picking up a Zodiac if i already have a GP32?

cheers as always - dc

Search for a site called ZodiacGamer. NO ROMS but they have emu's and lot's of program info. I haven't spent enough time with the GP32 to make a comparison. It's a nice machine, but fairly pricey. Nice screen (that's touch too, btw). Makes an excellent combination PDA/EMU device though I'm not crazy about using it for MP3's or Movies (though you can do both). You can also buy a wireless card for it, I've browsed GAF on it many a time. The NES and SNES emulation are excellent. It has somewhat sketchier abilities on Genesis, TGR16 and Neo-Geo but they do work under different settings. The main emulator which runs them all (LittleJohn) receives updates fairly often.

The big race right now is to see who cracks a good GBA emulator. Right now it only runs GB/GBC. A lot of the homebrew is so/so. There are some great games that also utilize the touch abilities though, and it also plays thousands of PalmOS games. I was playing with one of these before the DS came out which makes that device seem even less thrilling. A lot of the coolest functions are PDA related or productivity features. Or goofing off using some of the hacked remote control programs (bluetooth and IR ready).

Get Zodiac 2 as it has more internal memory. Cards are cheaper for memory too as it uses SD.
