PSP launch sales for Australia = 34k

http://www.smarthouse.com.au/Entert...e=/Entertainment/Games And Gear/News/P9X4M4V4

Almost 40,000 Sony PSP"s have been sold in Australia in the past 2 weeks. Launched late last month the PSP is set to be a "Must Have" this Xmas.

Sony Computer Entertainment Austtralia has almost met an ambitious target of selling 40,000 PlayStation Portable handheld games machines within two weeks of the devices' local release, with sales monitoring agency GfK Marketing confirming yesterday that some 34,172 units were sold in the 14 days to September 11, 2005.

Some 20,000 units were pre-ordered before the Australian launch on September 1. According to SCE's Adrian Christie, "a few" customers did not pick up their pre-ordered units, but the launch had nevertheless been more successful than any other gaming device launch in recent years. The 34,172 confirmed sales represent retail-level revenue of more than $13.3 million, within sight of the forecast $16 million.

They cast some doubt, however on SCE Australia's forecast of 250,000 sales worth $100 million by Christmas, aided by a $5 million promotional blitz (CDN Aug. 11).

Sony badly wants the PSP to outsell Apple's iPod in Australia this Christmas, after the iPod stole No 1 retail spot from Sony last year.

One rival the PSP won't have to face at Christmas is Microsoft's new Xbox 360 console. Microsoft yesterday confirmed that it would not be launched in Australia until 2006, despite announcing a November 22 date for the UK release and December 2 for Europe. The PSP will still face new competition at the lower end before Christmas, with Nintendo launching its $179 dual-screen DS handheld on September 22, and the $150 Game Boy Micro on November 3.

Undeterred, Sony is looking to 330-380,000 PSP unit sales in Australia by the end of March. The company claims the PSP is much more than a games machine, since it can also play music, show photos and full-length Hollywood movies.

The PSP weighs 280 grams, has a 4.3-inch wide-screen high-res display, built-in stereo speakers and 32 megs of main memory.

Should be a great little stocking stuffer.

For reference, the DS sold 19,191 units in it's first week. Don't have second week numbers. Both launched on a Thursday, so both two week totals would for 11 days.

Australia, Melbourne, March 2nd 2005 After it first week on sale the Nintendo DS has broken all current Australian launch sales records* for fastest selling console.

From Thursday 24th February to close of business Sunday 27th February the Nintendo DS sold through a staggering 19191** units to consumers eager to touch the future of gaming.

Amazing. That must be the most successful handheld launch in Australia right there.

Aaaaannd, it looks like PSP software is still selling great, too.

Bloody amazing.

It's the most successful launch period. I believe DS held the record previously, seems like the PSP is really big in the PAL areas.

That DS figure (19191) is for 4 Days! (And Sunday half the Country aint open) The 34k PSP Figure is for 2 Weeks!

Do some Simple Maths if you times that 4 Day figure by 4 which is 16 Days it is 76764 now take off two days worth of sales (4797.75) that equals 71966.25 DS sales in the Same Period, Granted it probally reallly is'nt that much as the 19k Figure would be a Rush and it would of slowed down maybe over the two week period. (Actually I know its not because Nintendo had sold 63K DS's in Aus at the Start of the E3)

I knew as soon as Sony released figures people would do this, but you can really compare figures 4 Days VS 2 Weeks. Come on People!

That's because Nintendo isn't even trying in Australia... not sure about Europe though.

DS is now being shuffed to the back of the EBgames stores now, right next to the GC games... pretty sad.

Who cares about the sales in Australia? It's puny. Really teenie tiny. It doesn't particularly have any strategic importantance. Sorry.

It's unlikely you can maintain launch sales over many days after launch. Unless we know how much of a drop those DS sales (if any) over those 4 days and the amount of available stocks at that time, it's rather pointless to speculate how much was sold over a two-week period.

Are you really this dumb?

1) Read the article. It clearly states that it's the best launch in recent history (which includes the DS.

2) The DS total is for 4 days (one retail week that ended on Sunday). The PSP total is for 11 days (two retail weeks). HINT: System sell better day 1 of launch than the whole of the next week.

Try again.
:lol

Good one.

But, they're still numbers!! (which while in the big picture don't mean much, but they make me happy. I'm kinda sad that way)

And you can trust this Press Release? Nintendo have'nt released 2 week figures so why and how can they conlcude it to be the most successful? It may well be more successful but without proof to back it up whats the point?

And what Im saying even though Sale's would of Reduced from the Initial 4 Day period its stupid to compare launch with 2 Full Weeks of Sales compared 4 Days (one of which half the country is'nt even open). The whole PSP VS DS Sales arguement is stupid using sales figures from two conflicting sales periods.

The PSP sold more but it was also released at slow peroid of the year, That would be why its filling up then charts and Pokemon Emerald has been number one for 9 weeks (excluding last week).

Either Way I dont care its just stupid to compare.

I see about 4 PSP TV ads and a couple of train/bus-stop billboard ads for it every day, and every store has a big display for it. When the DS was launched I saw a couple of TV ads total and one day at a shopping centre I saw a heap of very little kids playing Nintendogs on DSes that were wired up/chained to a woman. I have to search for the DS in most shops. The Sony advertising is just $$$$$x10 more than Nintendo's in Australia. Sony's advertising also makes it clear that the PSP does a number of things - movies, music, games etc, whereas Nintendo's "touch" campaign wouldn't make sense to a lot of people. It makes sense that PSP would outsell DS here.

How long will the PSP stay afloat for?

I think it'll still be top even if software release is shit slow, retail will still lap up the fact that you can watch UMD.

Australia = Sony Land.

trying to get an angry reaction?

Uhm, these sales are definitely very good, but they aren't as "OMFG!!!!!!!!!!"-ish as the UK ones, where PSP sold more than twice as much units as DS in 4 vs. 3(3 vs. 2) days. I would roughly estimate that DS sold about 25k in the first two weeks compared to the 34k PSP's, which isn't THAT much more(especially if we remember how long Europeans/Australians had to wait for PSP).
