PSP non-value pack coming soon?

Went to Fry's today - noticed that the whole line of first party PSP accessories was released (pouch + handstrap, remote + headphones, 32MB memory stick...)...

Since every US PSP owner to date already has these accessories, I suspect Sony will announce the imminent availability of a non-value pack PSP, possibly next week.

Discuss. :)

you expect this based on any REAL info from Sony, or just a hunch?

Because if it's not based on some sort of info you know this thread is lame!

The real info from Sony is already posted in this thread - that the aforementioned accessories are available at retail, as in right now.

The rest, as I clearly stated with the words "I suspect..." is conjecture.

I can't think of a good reason for Sony to release those accessories separately at this point, unless they were planning on releasing a non-value pack PSP soon. Can you?

only because Kobun did an interview with that one dude who said there would be no "non-value" pack coming this year

but who knows!

It's about a month since the PSP launch, considering Sony's track record.... this is about the right time to release replacement accessories for those included that are no doubt starting to wear out at about now! :lol

I was actually thinking of getting a PSP in the next few days, I just don't know how great my need for portable gaming really is, but it looks cool and a few titles appeal to me.

Exactly. Things break, and people lose things. So, Sony offers replacements. Simple as this...this "evidence" is a failure.

I'd say that Sony will offer a non-value pack when Nintendo drops the price of the DS and the gap becomes more than $100.

Wow hilarious! :lol

To be honest, when that interview was done, it was probably true, there were no plans for a non-value pack, and if there were, what incentive would there be for Sony to publicize that? It's the same thing as announcing a console price drop 6 months before it happens - no one does that, for pretty obvious reasons.

Now, it is entirely possible that Sony thinks that we'll want to buy replacement accessories that we've lost...but another possibility that has crossed my mind is that perhaps PSP sales are slowing down and this would be an quick way to jumpstart them. I live in LA and although PSP supply was very short in the first few weeks after launch, they are pretty readily available right now...did we ever get hardware numbers posted in the NPD thread?

Oh yeah - lucky for you guys I'm being honest here - if I wanted to be an ass like some other posters, I'd just hint that I knew more than you did and you guys would be sitting on the edge of your seats, hoping that I'm drunk enough to divulge more "info" with my next post. :)

Anyone who says that there are "no plans for a value pack" is full of it. There WILL be a PSP without the included accessories, and it'll happen as soon as they want to drop the price to $199.

yeah, i'm sure a few people have had their pouches eaten by a dog or something..

or their remote fell apart...

when is sony gonna sell a replacement for the speaker?

Sony needs to release a remote that can skip groups and such. Or maybe toggle shuffle and repeat modes.

That current remote is way too basic. :\

Um. or at least turn of the PSP? I found this odd. Can we do it with the current remote?

You guys keep looking at this the wrong way. The price Sony wants to sell the PSP *itself* at is $250. The accessories are just to sweeten the deal. I doubt they'll eliminate the accessories as part of a price drop, whenever that happens.

Well, it's not selling very well at $250, so while they may want to sell it at $249, the market will demand a price drop. The best way to accomplish that is to unbundle the accessories, so that they are still making roughly the same amount, maybe slightly less, on the actual hardware.

Come on, this is Economics 101 people ...

Wasn't there a quote from someone at Sony saying we wouldn't see a non-bundle pack for the PSP this year?

.... earlier that evening ...

except they dont want to lose (more?) money, and the bundled accessories cost WAY less than $50, so removing them at a $50 loss may be too much...

Again, what they WANT is irrelevant. The desire to get the device into more hands (pressure from publishers, consumer demand) will force a price drop. Removing the accessories will absorb some of the cost.

It's not rocket science ...

of course what they want is relevant, they can keep the price there despite the publishers, as long as they calculate that the money lost by lowering would exceed the money lost from publishers...

Yup, if they want to have significant marketshare for the PSP they need to drop the price and unbundle the bundle. Soon. Every shop I go to has tons of these things, Sony is going to have to push to get these systems sold.

The majority of the included accessories are complete fluff. The most costly thing in the bundle is the memory stick and I doubt that a 32 meg NON-PRO MS Duo stick is really cutting into the margins much, esp. when Sony is dumping Memory Sticks of similar capacity into the box with just about every digital camera they sell.

Those accessories are for the people who imported Japanese systems.

yes. that's how they'd think. I think the US price isn't that bad but going forward.. Sony should try to move more PSPs to help increase dev support. It is very expensive though (with game + mem stick), you're looking at $300-400) so anything they can do to push the price down would be good.

Missed it but any NPD hardward numbers for PSP vs DS in the US?

Ok so with a 971,000 total for the PSP in the US so far, what's the total for the DS in the US so far? Anyone have the numbers?

Were those Frys accessories from Japan perhaps?

That thought crossed my mind, since they are selling Japanese games now. They also now have extra batteries and AC adaptors - the batteries are $35, much cheaper than the 5000Y retail for the Japanese batteries...I also remember seeing a U in the model numbers for the accessories (like PSP-xxxU - looking at the Japanese Playstation.com site, the remote is PSP-140W, for example.) The packaging was the standard multi-lingual packaging, I don't recall seeing Japanese text on it, but it did have French/Spanish/etc...

1,650,895 plus whatever part of the 250K that was posted the GBA/DS sold in April.

April Hardware Sales

PSP = 351,000
PS2 = 332,000
Xbox = 153,000
GCN = 63,000
GBA/DS = 250,000 (approx)

If anything that chart shows how massive the US market is. oh wait it doesn't I got the weekly number mixed up. NPD is monthly aint' it.

DS/GBA is floundering. :| Well, I don't blame it though. Nintendo did cull whatever momentum they had with their non releases. :| April was really bad too. :\ Leaving the DS to be proped by their 3d party was a bad bad idea.

I finally held one today at the Gamestop. They are nicer than I thought they were and I previously thought they were the shit. They are using it to show off 360 vids. Gotta love the irony. I'd get one but I honestly have no need for it. One will find it's way home one day though.
