PSP RELEASE DATE!! (24th of march)

Holy shite, a lot of people are eating crow for breakfast this morning. :lol :lol :lol

While the price is disappointing, it won't matter that much sales-wise. The Sony-base will still eat this thing up (as they should, it's a damn nice system).

The price isn't really that unexpected (it's comparable with the JPN VP price). The lack of a standard pack is though.

I wonder if the inclusion of Spiderman is to convince other studios to jump on the UMD bandwagon?

I'd like to think that Sony won't try to screw the Euros over too much, but I'm not confident. However I don't think they'll be able to go for 250GBP PSP. At current exchanges rates importers could pick up a US PSP, mark it up a bit and still undercut Sony. So I think in this instance a straight dollar conversion wouldn't really work.

No I don't. I am holding out for Wario ware and Yoshi's touch and go. But I will buy a DS in march. And I will probably buy a PSP this summer. :)

Anyway, it's cool that it comes with Spider-Man 2, but i'd like a game demo or something else with it.. and it would be tough to pick one game out of all those, lots of those games are going to flop / get overshadowed. I'm interested in Lumines, and NBA Street... what new stuff does that have btw? and what's new in THUG 2 Remix?
 
I'd prefer the bundling from retailers than this. At least with retailer forced bundling you still have some flexability, here you get a bunch of stuff for $50 that you probably don't need.
 
That cant be the real price. They are probably doing this too squeeze as much out of the newbies who will pay anything i guess IF ITS TRUE. Which it wont be. Otherwise expect a swift price cut shortly following launch.

I'll wait for the confirmation from SCE.

Time will tell if PSP's sexiness is enough to warrant strong sales despiting a high price like it happens with the ipod. I can't wait till the pre-E3 NPD riots! :lol
 
Sucks that theres no base package, 32mb isn't much to work with. Wish the games werent so expensive, I see like 5-6 I wanna pick up on launch.
 
I wonder where Pimpwerkx is? He's the one being most aggreessive about PSP pricing. I disn't see that many other people saying it'd be cheaper than it was in Japan (although the value-pack-only ting is a twist).

I'm disappointed by the outward glee of some folks, especially ones who are dogging others (rightly) for the same behavior.

Too expensive, i'll wait for the single pack. There's nothing worth getting on it either, so im not in a hurry to buy it. IF pro evo 4 was launching THEN id pay upto $400 for one.
 
Too bad about the price. Guess I won't be getting one any time soon. (Before anyone jumps on me, I'm waiting for a DS price drop too.)

Guess that means no DS price drop either... man, both machines really should be $50 cheaper. I think I'll still hold out until fall for both though, Xenon coming in at $299 will likely force Sony's hand (which will then force Nintendo too).
 
I think $150 for the DS is fine, but I do however think they should pack in at least a launch game in just to offset the psps launch.
 
I know the managers of GAME in the UK have been told to focus on the DS. They have also been told to expect a price of between £179.99 and £249.99. Usually console prices go at a staright $-£ convertion, if the PSP does end up at £249.99 it will not fly off the shelves. I also heard from one of the reps that the PSP was priced to sucure the JPN market, whilst make profit in Europe and the States. So although Europe usually get rapped on prices it appears America is also this time.

The value pack thing is decent for the person who loves to spend money, and I suppose it serves as a small means to offset the cost of PSP by including some cheap "bonuses." Spiderman 2 is genrerous, but I don't think it'll spark much interest in UMD movies beyond a niche market.

I think its pretty weak that there's no stand-alone unit to sell, though, or even a bundled game. Most people buying this aren't doing so for movies or music, but games. Lumines or Metal Gear Ac!d would have been nice pack-ins and made the $250 easier to swallow.

I don't exactly see Sony giving Nintendo the market here, but it doesn't seem like they intend to take it away, either. Its more like they're just going to carve a niche for themselves, a niche big enough to support PSP for a long time. Nintendo will still have their market since people like affordable hardware and software for portables.
 
Guns, well it will probably be £199.99 but when you consider the DS is £99 I will have a worth rival no doubts.
 
For 300 dollars canadian, I expect a game, not a movie. I though this supposed to be a direct competition for the DS. I guess not. I rather have a gaming machine with long battery life than an portable multimedia system.

I'm sticking with the DS.

:lol Thats BS. It wont cost more than £130. The DS will get attention first since it out slightly earlier. PSP will also get dedicated attention.

And before the Sony fans get on me, you were all going on about the perceived value that the PSP was over the DS for a mere $50 more, so why shouldn't the same hold true for the Xbox 2?

Yes, I know the whole portable/home console side of things, but you would be crazy to think that the difference in tech between the PSP and Xbox 2 is not gonna get the casuals to rethink their purchases.

Its not. DS was never suppossed to be doing that much. Let alone rival PSP in anyway.

PSP should still sell really well for the first few months at any price. The fans will pay $500 for it just like that. They need it.

iapetus: If you're from Europe, good luck getting one from an online U.S. retailer. If you don't wanna pre-order and you wanna assure units, you need to be hitting the K-Mart, Walmart, Targets when they open the doors (I'm sure Best Buy will have the huge lines like they did when PS2 launched). So either pre-order or buy a plane ticket for the U.S. and camp a Walmart, because if you think you're gonna pick up a base unit (without a bundle) at your choosing, forget it.
 
1 million PSPs shipped to US by end of March + price over $200 + March launch window = me not having to do anything crazy to get one on launch day, most likely. So I'm more than fine with that.

BUT WHERE THE FUCK IS MERCURY??!!!?? It's gone gold already, fer christ sake, so why isn't it on the launch list?

Difference in visuals != difference in tech. There's simply no better handheld tech than what is packed in the PSP right now. Unless they can make Xbox 2 pocketable with viisuals like the home console will produce, it's ridiculous to say that the tech is somehow 'better'.
 
I think you guys are looking at this wrong.

Sony isn't doing this to compete with Nintendo, It's a shot across Microsoft's bow.

If MS doesn't show something concrete on the Xenon by March, Everyone will spend $250+ on a PSP, and won't have the money for another system purchase in the fall.

Sony i assume want record profits this year i guess :lol The fans will pay anyway. I still find this hard to believe. Sony will drop the price afew weeks before launch just watch.
 
Why the fuck are you guys complaining about the price? $249 bucks for something that wipes its ass with the DS, plays/rips movies and has PS2 quality graphics, you have to be joking if you think that's too expensive. It's like you're complaining about spending money. :lol
