PSP released and no NDS pricedrop? Nintendo unafraid?

I have to say, now that PSP has been out for a couple of days; I am pretty surprised that Nintendo hasn't done more (bundles..etc) to counter the PSP assault. One of the things that got leaked pre-NDS launch was the NDS yen price which got a lot of people assuming that Nintendo has a margin by which to launch NDS @ and still be profitable.

Anyone knows what's happening in Redmond and how they plan to address this? (besides that lame street crew concept)

(fixed..> Redmond)

Japan could use a price cut I think, but we'll probably see a surge in DS sales there with the new colors and the release of Kirby and Nintendogs within about a month of each other.

In the US, really I think its probably likely that Nintendo will remain no.1 through the year because they have a 2 million or so headstart and a $100 lower price point.

Why would Nintendo drop the price? Sony's done all the damage that can be done to the PSP launch by not promoting enough outside of the internet.

Why do a price drop right now? Their userbase lead is quite solid, and there are no indicators that their sales are dropping. Both company's believe their products are going after different markets, so unlike the consoles I don't think you're going to see what I'd call "competitive" price drops, as often.

They'll probably drop the price in America when Sony brings out the standard PSP packs. And maybe they'll drop the price in Europe when Sony launches the PSP in 2011.

I wouldn't put it past Nintendo to drop the hardware price around Christmas, but I don't see why they would need to do so now. If anything a new PSP package minus the SHIT I DON'T WANT OR NEED priced at $200 by the summer would be very much appreciated.

If anything, I think a price drop on the DS as an immediate reaction to the PSP launch would send a pretty negative signal that Nintendo is worried about the competition. At $149 the DS is still 100 bucks cheaper and there's no reason to drop it yet. I agree that a price drop by Christmas on the DS would be very plausible.

I have seen the commercial over 5 times already. It's pretty funny there is one part where a kid is playing the PSP in class and the teacher tries to take it away. :lol

But I thought the PSP wasn't supposed to be for kids?????

And Wario: that doesn't make sense, because pretty much everyone who gets a DS is buying Mario 64 for it. (ok, not everyone, but 30-50% of the owners are.)

It would make more sense to bundle something that shows off the DS' abilities, like, say, Wario Ware, or Kirby DS, or Metroid Hunters, when it comes out.

And if Nintendo REALLY wants to push the online for the DS, they could bundle mario kart.

NDS bundled with Mario64DS for free = $120 NDS omgwtf

That happened to me back in January, where my teacher saw me show a picture to someone and then he took it. After a minute of glancing, he finally gave it back. :lol

I think the black and white DS models will be availible in the US this summer, probably around June or July and will be featured at E3.

Maybe some other colors will make the cut also, but I don't see the pink DS ever launching here, heh.

DS will probably drop to $129 for Fall. Maybe have it bundled with Mario 64 DS for $149. I don't think Nintendo is too concerned right now. Even though sales are slowing, DS still has a lot of units out right now. Maybe if PSP sales suddenly explode and set new records (that DS just set) in other areas, then maybe Nintendo would be worried.

Things for the DS in North America and Europe are looking very good. Especailly if Sony's PSP launch is a bit slower than expected in North America, the DS already has a big headstart here of probably over 2 million units. They're going to be tough to catch.

Japan I think maybe a cause of some worry as the PSP continues to outsell the DS and GBA SP combined week in, week out. They need to get sales going over there.

How Japan reacts to an online Pokemon for the DS could be very interesting though.

You do realize 2 million + is far larger than the 1 million the DS has in Japan and even if the PSP continues to outsell the DS by 20k in Japan as it has, it'll still take the PSP most of the year to catch the DS there.

Especailly since the PSP is $250 only here.

And you should probably note I said through the year (which means 2005 only). Beyond that who knows.

pricedrops can suck my balls, i'd rather just buy one off a PSP drooling friend, which i did just tonight! LOL

They buy anything in Japan from Sony, I mean, there are miscues, like that ill-fated PS2 with the hard drive, but mostly, they gobble it up

Yes but how do you know if your friend didn't use his upright cock on his DS before you did!?!?!

TOUCHING IS GOOD.

I wonder if that Fry's deal if the new forthcoming Nintendo DS bundle.

How come Sony has yet to announce how many units they have sold?
Companies love to brag about their "momentums"
The only recent statement from Sony about PSP is about customer care regarding dead pixels.

Sony will need to make some price adjustment before Nintendo will counter.

All Nintendo needs to do is drop a few must have games and they wouldn't really need a price drop.

Given the DS is heavily favoured by SquareEnix on one hand and is seeing first signs of RTS games in the west, it could turn out to be a really fun system to own.

StarCraft online? ok, I'll settle for the next Command and Conquer game on-line. *drool*

When Blizzard makes an announcement, I'll buy a DS. That or when Square shows off their slate of announced DS games and make me really want it. Right now, Nintendo's got it right finally by brining the DS online.

So when are Four Swords and Crystal Chronicles hitting DS? Even if they were straight ports, I'd buy a DS just for those two games.

Agreed. That bundle is complete ass... and a side effect is that it drives the cost of extended warrarties up (Since they're usually decided by retail price). A crap free bundle for 199.99 would also drop the warranty from 39.99 to 24.99 (If my BB memory serves correct). Throw in tax on that, and they've driven up the real cost by 70 dollars. That's a significant difference that makes an impulse buy a lot easier to swallow (If you're not a Sony whore.)

[Sarcasm]Well, they aren't in direct competition, you know? So why should Nintendo time a price drop in accordance with the PSP's release schedule?[/Sarcasm]

What is so hard to understand?

your remark made no sense. So you're saying every price drop is preceded by the release of a top game or something to that effect? WHy? Wouldn't a great games propel sales without the need for pricedrop? That's what makes no sense.

I thought you ignored user me. /weeps at dark10x's grace ^_^

There's absolutely no need to drop the price. It's already cheaper than PSP, why would you drop the price further? They're not in that bad shape. They haven't even released Pokemon yet. :p

Assuming Pokemon Dash doesn't count. :) :lol

That's not true. DS have sold more units in Japan than United States.

To date:

America: 1,487,685 units (NPD Feb)
Japan: 1,905,000 units (Famitsu)

A 1M unit launch will put the US PSP on the same footing as the JP PSP. They might not sell out in March afterall, but they'll sell out in due time. And the gap here will probably look similar to that in JP. Nintendo should enjoy close a 3M unit gap in shipped totals, but the sell-through should closer to 2M. Then again, the gap will continue to grow in Europe for as long as Sony delays over there. PEACE.

HAve you been reading GAF/other boards the last couple of days. If anything, not only did SONY not sell through their 1 mill, i'd say they had a bit of disasater on hand with the PSP dead pixel disaster. If anything from the way it sounds, they had rather losses/launch blues compared to NDS. Problem with their AWESOME AS FUCK screen is that anything less than perfect = consumer scorn.

the creation of the DS itself and its rushed release already shows how much Nintendo fears the PSP

No DS: "Nintendo hasn't done shit like they always do!"
DS: "Nintendo fears the PSP!"

Why can't they catch a break?
