PSP RPG Day: It's good.

Picked up Kingdom of Paradise and Legend of Heroes. I've put about an hour into Kingdom of Paradise and a little over two into Legend of Heroes.

Thankfully, the hideously foul taste of Magna Carta hasn't killed my desire for a decent RPG, and both these games seem to deliver. Brief initial impressions:

Legend of Heroes is old-school Falcom with a SERIOUS visual and usability upgrade. It's classic bighead sprites and big complicated dungeons, and the battle system feels like Lunar's but a lot flashier. There's a lot of anime talking head jabber and emoting sprites, but when you finally break away from the prologue into the meat of the game, it's pure 16-bit design goodness with a current gen polish. The frame rate is glassy smooth, and outside of initial 10 second or so spot, load times are almost non-existent save for the occasional hitch before a big spell. The art and texture work, while simple, is very pretty, and there's a lot of nice environmental effects. This is good stuff.

Kingdom of Paradise is even prettier still, and has great animation. The battles are a weird combination of Dynasty Warriors and Star Ocean, with combos you design yourself by placing scrolls into this bugei combo graph thing. I haven't really gotten into it, but MAN the fights look good, the character models are decent (despite what the atrocious boxart would have you believe), and the environments are sexy. Again, load times aren't a problem that I've noticed. Minuses? THe voice work is spotty, but I'm so shocked by having full voice in a handheld RPG that I ain't gonna complain. This game is a looker, and appears to have some interesting innovations, though we'll see.

Well, I'm impressed. The Magna Carta Episiode(tm) has been forgotten, and I'm gonna settle in for some animu fag stat wanking amusement.

I picked the both of these up today after convincing myself based on the reviews that there wouldn't be a lot of this:

in either game. God damnit. :(

HOTSOME!

When I get a PSP and ascend to the throne of godhood, I plan on adding KoP to my collection. Reading you comparing it to the mighty Dynasty Warriors causes my man-meats to gorge with red stuffs in anticipation of hot times. :q

I need to call Game Crazy and see if they'll give me the free rentals deal if I buy my PSP from them.

I really like how KoP handles the talking heads, though; it fades the models/scene out a little and then overlays a close-up of the hi-def models jabbering, waving, and emotiong. The facial expressions are actually pretty well done and amusing. Hey, it's the best implementation of a narrative crutch yet!

I'm sold on Legend of Heroes.

Will it force me to upgrade my firmware??? I still have 2.0 because I don't have any PSP games now.

just checked gamefaqs and they say it works on 1.5 (Legends of Heroes)

the game does have 2.0 firmware upgrade but it works if you use fastloader

Wow

and emoting sprites

This drives me insane. Gives me nightmares of playing Golden Sun.

One character with a talk/emoticon bubble above them: . . .
Another character responds with an emotion bubble above them: . . .
Another character reponds with an emotion bubble above them: ; ;

I just summerized Golden Sun's entire plot and dialogue with that :p

AHHH THE HORROR. You just brought all of those bad memories back.

*giant sweat drop appears on head*

Thanks for the impressions. These sound great, and I've been waiting for some real RPG goodness on the PSP. Sounds like both of these are going to do the trick. After I finish GTA, I'm going to grab one or both of these.

I want both of these a lot, especially Legend of Heroes. Jesus christ LoH looks incredible. How the hell could the disparity be so large between IGN's review and GameSpy/1up's? Ah well, I'll get them both as soon as I get the cash.

I haven't had a chance to play Kingdom of Heaven, but I completely agree with your Legend of Heroes impressions. Just a fun, good-looking classic-style RPG. My only complaint, however, is the control. I can't really get comfortable moving around with either the d-pad or the analog stick. It's a small complain, though.

Yea, IGN ravaged LoH but so far I find it far more compelling than a game like this had right to be. It's a RPG so who knows in a day or so but so far thumbs up.

does kingdom of heroes work on 1.5? i'm guessing not. might as well resign myself to upgrading...i really want koh and gta. i'll miss overclocking, though. :/

Legend of Heroes has been on my Xmas list for a while considering my love for all things Falcom. The one thing I'm wondering about that hasn't really been addressed in this thread is - how is the music in the game?

Kingdom of Paradise was completely off my radar but a name drop of Star Ocean has me interested all of a sudden...

Legend of Heroes works on 1.5? Awesome. Buying soon, then. I was gonna get it eventually, but now... *changes into Falcom Whore outfit*

Kindgom of Paradise. Hideous box art. Thought it was a bullshit action game. Suddenly on my radar again.

The only thing starting to wear on me with LoH is the onscreen movement. It's strange with both the analog and dpad. What's up with that?

Yeah, although I've gotten used to the D-pad in LoH. It's obvious it was designed to be like the old tile-based four-cardinal-directions-only old-school RPGs, and the analog support was added as an afterthought. Once I realize that I'm not gonna be following the optimum path through an area and treat it like the tile-based game it actually is, I'm fine. ;)

Really, though, that's an excuse, and the movement control *is* a small ding against LoH overall.

*cry* I've already got too many games to play. Crap to review, DQVIII, MKDS, still working on Libery City Stories (though I think I've resigned to the fact that that's a long-term thing). You make my wallet cry, Drinky. :(

That IGN review is fuckin stupid. He claims in the end there are all these glaring issues he can't ignore but doesn't really state any major ones in the review.

Oh no the story reiterates itself too much. Who cares about story, if you haven't outgrown RPG stories by now you're a dumb little kid and I refuse to believe otherwise.

i heard it does. don't plan on putting it on your mem stick though, i think it's over a gig

Well I started on Kingdom of Paradise on the weekend.

Great graphics, nice story, get to the temple, oh so you want me to train you?

Die

Try again

repeat x 50

Any tips?! I've charged up and used my Chi attack and landed full combos on him several times, used refresh drops, everything - this little punk just whoops on me! :(

Sounds like another case of Drinky PSP-whoring. The game is getting horrendous reviews, has the shittiest, most generic name in existence, yet should be good because it's on an overpriced high-tech gimmick.

There's 2 games being discussed here and if you're talking about Kingdom of Paradise you'd be well off the mark, but your little "overpriced high-tech gimmick" comment betrays your bias anyway (and ironically the game isnt even on the DS).

LMAO This is the very reason that if you asked me who my favorite and most hated poster on GAF is, you'd get the same answer. :lol :lol

Uh yea, nice RPGs...

Anyway, I got a quick off-topic question.. HOW THE HELL DO I BECOME ELIGIBLE TO POST TOPICS HERE ?! Thank You... :D

Bear in mind that making trashy posts just to get to 100 will prevent you from getting your posting rights.

Both these games on the way - should be getting them next week. Three cheers for region free handheld gaming...

I've been playing X-men Legends II on the PSP. Between the "fixed" graphics and the extra stuff, I'm thinking this is the "definitive" version of the game. I'm very impressed.

Why do people complain about the name of this game, when it's the direct translation of a name that the series has had for 20 or so years in Japan? Plus, there are much worse names for games out there... Driver, for instance (then again, the Driver series is well known for totally sucking).

There can only be one between these two games for me. As much as I'd love to hear the awesome music and take in the old shcool feel of Legend of Heroes, the prospect of rampant anime emoting annoys me. I will probably go with Kingdom of Paradise to sate my PSP RPG needs.
