Thanks to Sony's online auction providing help to those affected by the Mid-Niigata Earthquake, we are able to hold our very first Sony PSP™ Value Pack in our hands today.

With excitement we have played around with the unit for a couple of hours now. This news post should give everyone eagerly looking forward to their PSP™ console a first impression. We have taken a total of more than 60 shots including an step by step open-up gallery of our parcel, comparison shots as well as screenshots. Further a total of 24 videos are available for download which were taken from the PSP™ interface as well as various videos that can be found on the included UMD movie demo disc

Speaking about the Memory Stick Duo, we have tested a conventional Memory Stick Duo Pro 512MB from our Sony digicam which was finally found compatible. The Memory Stick lets you store pictures, music as well as your own video files that can be played back on the PSP console. Sony announced a MPEG4 movie converter to be available for download before end of the year.

Fortunately a Demo UMD Movie Disc has been included with the PSP Value Pack. We expect the disc to be bundled with every unit shipping on Dec 12th. The Movie Demo disc contains videos of upcoming PSP titles (such as Armored Core, Doko Demo, Minna no Golf, Metal Gear Acid, Puyo Puyo Fever, Ridge Racers, Segoku Musou, Vampire Chronicles and more) as well as UMD Movies (such as Kung Fu Hustle, Spanglish, Biohazard 2: Apocalypse, Hitch, Wicker Park, Naruto and a sample video) and UMD Music previews.

I would like to see a size comparison of the PSP's umd to a Gamecube disc.

As it is though, anyone who says the DS or the PSP is too big in comparison to the other is an idiot.

Hmm..they should really really have put it through some tests to verify things like battery life etc..

Hopefully they will do soon :)

I know.. I got my PSP unit, and I tried to play a game, but had to sit it down, go watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy and come back, and it was STILL loading the damn track.

is psp gonna come with a cover?something that you could preferrably just snap on and off?

peace

no, that is my concern. Im definitely getting it a protective case.. anyone have pictures of some peripherals that could do this?

Err whoops. Nice impressions! I had mentioned in the otehr thread, that I just love how smooth the interface is. It's beautiful. That and video playing on it. Wow.

The combo pack comes with a soft pouch. i'm just guessing here, but any case that fits the NR/NX/NZ-series Clies should fit the PSP, or DS for that matter.

does the psp come with a memory stick.. or do you have to purchase one in order save games ?
The bundle comes with one, 32mb. But the cheaper system only one doesn't, so you'll have to buy one to save games and whatnot.

the value pack has a carying case with it. you can probably close the zipper and leave the headphone /remote cable sticking out.

Ah, good to hear. Those 3rd-party carrying cases are usually pretty ugly and cheap :/ (save a few exceptions). Sony managed to design a stylish handheld, surely they're able to design an equally cool-looking carrying case.

it's the charity event where 500 ppl got psp a week earlier than launch.
Yeah but still. If people were that concerned about the victims why not donate directly to them (assuming it's possible). I could sort of understand if Sony had thrown in a game or two...

really, realize what you are whining about.

Cool, a demo disc! Too bad it doesn't contain any playable demos though...but maybe they'll add some for the US/Europe release?

Cool I think this is the first confirmation that the PSP does support Memory Stick Pros, at least it's the first I've seen.

Fuck charity auctions! Those dumbasses! :lol

and with that, I think every aspect of the PSP's existence has now officially been complained about....

When we selected Game Share, the PSP went on a search for other players, but gave up when it found none. On this Game Share mode, while choosing the mode itself didn't offer any explanation besides its title, the semi-self-explanatory nature of what it was doing and what it's called shows that the PSP can offer multiplayer gamers the same one-game, many-players feature offered in some DS and GBA titles. Ridge Racers is the first game we've found so far to offer this unannounced multiplayer feature where only one system needs the game, but we weren't able to convince any of the other players hogging the demo systems to try it out with us.

!!

Ridge Racers has single disc multiplayer!?

If the game is single disc multiplayer, maybe the load times aren't really "load times" and its reserving time to stream the massive amount of data it needs send out to any other PSP that doesn't actually have the disc.

Then again, maybe the load time is the "load time" and if you're sharing the "load time" will be even longer as it streams all that data wirelessly out to the other PSP's you're playing with . . . ugh!

so.. do we know if ridge racers has wifi online multiplayer or just wireless?

Im assuming wifi would require everyone to have the game.. but just one person needs the game for multiplayer? that is hot.

I thought everybody was saying that the DS was SO bulky compared to the PSP? Looks to me like the DS is actually very slightly smaller (width wise). The DS is guaranteed to be thicker, but that's not really an issue where portability is concerned.

PSP looks dead sexy though. Can't wait to start playing MP3s on this thing... and Ken said the PSPs battery life will improve over time (probably with better battery packs... hopefully you won't have to buy an entirely new PSP to take advantage of this), so... yay!!

As for Ridge Racers, IGN said it does have same disc multiplayer. Let's hope they are right :p

Hmm? I don't think they were...

People were saying that the DS LOOKED much chunkier than the PSP, though. You also have to remember that original discussions started when the DS and PSP were first shown. The final DS model is different looking...

PSP is wider, but shorter and thinner.

Yeah, the battery can be removed just like a Sony camcorder battery. When I bought my Sony DV cam I didn't throw a fit and scream IT'S DOOOM3D! because it had only a four-hour battery out of the box. Instead, I bought a 12-hour battery. I wouldn't be surprised to see 8 and 12 hour PSP batteries out within a couple of months.

EDIT - GAH! There's chaos between us and our Japanese correspondents, getting everything done and corrected and all that. Ridge Racers is NOT confirmed to have this feature -- I read it wrong in editing Anoop's text about the WiFi option, and fixed it in the article. It could, but I am not sure if the WiFi searches out for every game or needs a special Game Share option to play. I do not know yet -- we'll try before the 12th to know.

damn you IGN, damn you!

Yeah, would really like to know if it does or not. But still not sure why it wouldn't. Not that hard, the tracks are all in memory, all you need to do is one big dump of data - have to redump for every course (same as DS), but hey, it'd be free.

:lol :lol :lol

I was pretty sure its not doable. How much date would you have to stream? Might as well sit there for a mocha chino while you wait

:lol We shall see, but I definitely had my laugh. I'm glad I'm not the *only* person who thought of it. You guys were so mean yesterday.

umm..for ridge racers you can play rally-x within th 10-15 seconds you wait.

but I guess the load times help battery-life
load into ram, reduce disc acess etc...

but geez :(

It's all in memory. What's the RAM, 32MB? Fill that up (and wouldn't that be 32MB uncompressed, since it'd need to be decompressed in RAM, so you could actually compress the upload and ship over less data than that) and off you go. I don't think many racing games have to touch the disc for anything but music files once the track and game data is loaded.
