We decided to make use of a version of Sony's Sonic Stage music management software that had shipped with our computer. We were able to create ATRAC music files from our CDs just as easy as we could MP3 files, but the tracks wouldn't appear in the XMB interface after we'd copied them over to the Music directory on the PSP. Apparently, ATRAC requires that you use Sonic Stage to copy the files over (by going through some confusing check-in/check-out process), but Sonic Stage, even in its newest version, wouldn't recognize the Memory Stick in the PSP.

"but Sonic Stage, even in its newest version, wouldn't recognize the Memory Stick in the PSP."
Weird, I would have thought it would have shown up as a network walkman or something. But they must really be intellectual midgets to think it's "confusing": you press the transfer button atop the interface, select the tracks you want to transfer and press the -> button. done.
What's confusing about that!?

Saint Ajola said:To get ATRAC files to play on the PSP you need:
1. A memory stick writer for the PC - SonicStage as yet does not recognise the PSP therefore you can cannot 'checkout' your ATRAC files to it directly hence the need for a memory stick writer. If you merely copy your ATRAC files directly over to the PSP bypassing SonicStage, they will not be recognised.
2. A non Pro Memory Stick with Magic Gate - though the largest non Pro sticks are only 128MB...

The first image I posted is a graphic of ATRAC sound quality. the 2nd one is a the compiled result of a British/german study on atrac vs MP3 sound quality, 64k ATRAC3 plus vs 128k mp3. The preferences even tilted towards 64k ATRAC3plus as sounding better.
