PSP SonicStage ATRAC3 support

Has anyone been able to transfer an ATRAC3 file to the PSP yet? I have a netMD player so I used SonicStage 2.3 often. When I plug the PSP in USB mode, I can't seem to have SonicStage to detect the PSP...

IGN had problems with ATRAC as well:

http://psp.ign.com/articles/573/573413p3.html

We decided to make use of a version of Sony's Sonic Stage music management software that had shipped with our computer. We were able to create ATRAC music files from our CDs just as easy as we could MP3 files, but the tracks wouldn't appear in the XMB interface after we'd copied them over to the Music directory on the PSP. Apparently, ATRAC requires that you use Sonic Stage to copy the files over (by going through some confusing check-in/check-out process), but Sonic Stage, even in its newest version, wouldn't recognize the Memory Stick in the PSP.

And for similar bitrates, ATRAC does sound better than MP3.

"but Sonic Stage, even in its newest version, wouldn't recognize the Memory Stick in the PSP."

Weird, I would have thought it would have shown up as a network walkman or something. But they must really be intellectual midgets to think it's "confusing": you press the transfer button atop the interface, select the tracks you want to transfer and press the -> button. done.

What's confusing about that!?

Yeah, it's really easy to transfer files, but the thing is the PSP is never recognised...

But the PSP *does* support the ATRAC3plus format. Not just MP3.

Off of the UMD (apparently), yeah:

I wouldn't be surprised if Sony just decided to kill ATRAC support off of the stick. Their dedication to that format really, really hurt them in the market, especially when nearly everything from the Apple iPod to the Zen supports MP3.

Sony to users: Want to listen to music? Use MP3.
Sony to developers: You can use ATRAC3Plus if you like.

And I'm sure that ATRAC directly from a CD is fine, but most people were often forced to convert already-ripped MP3s into the format, and rule #1 of digital audio or video is "Never recompress an already compressed file, unless you hate life." But that's what a lot of people did, ergo their first experience with SonicStage and ATRAC was often "This is fucking bullshit."

but I'm not talking about an entire collection, I'm talking about the limitted confines of a memstick when storing the music in 64 kbps Hi-LP could prove very advantageous. If you're not too picky you could even get away with 48 kbps if it does sound similar to LP4 ATRAC3.

That's called increasing the performance of the $ you invested in memory sticks.

Apparently, you can't play ATRAC3 files off Memory Stick Duo Pro sticks. Someone should try it on a standard Memory Stick Duo.

I'd think it would have more to do with the presence of magicgate encryption rather than the pro/non-pro nature of the stick. Sonicstage is ANAL about DRM.

I have a standard magicgate one, and it still doesn't work :S.

"For the 64 Kbps-to-128-Kbps range, has anyone performed any comparisons among standard MP3, ATRAC, and WMA?"

The first image I posted is a graphic of ATRAC sound quality. the 2nd one is a the compiled result of a British/german study on atrac vs MP3 sound quality, 64k ATRAC3 plus vs 128k mp3. The preferences even tilted towards 64k ATRAC3plus as sounding better.

Has anyone had luck with ATRAC3 transfers ? I tried using OpenMG Jukebox without any kind of success...

The "fake" firmware update shows that SonicStage support is yet to be added, so this may be why.

To get ATRAC files to play on the PSP you need:
1. A memory stick writer for the PC - SonicStage as yet does not recognise the PSP therefore you can cannot 'checkout' your ATRAC files to it directly hence the need for a memory stick writer. If you merely copy your ATRAC files directly over to the PSP bypassing SonicStage, they will not be recognised.
2. A non Pro Memory Stick with Magic Gate - though the largest non Pro sticks are only 128MB...

Yeah, it was already mentionned, but the Memory Stick writer are C$140. Too much for my tastes. (and yes, I already have 3 other Memory Stick writers, none of which support MagicGate grrrr.)

was the study sponsored by Sony? If it wasn't, I wouldn't trust it at all. I learned enough about "studies" conducted by drug companies to give me chills whenever I see those prescription drug commercials that blab on about how they're "proven" to work the best.

I was just copying OMGs from the Optimized Files folder to the PSP memory stick. I thought it would work but it doesn't.
