Thank fucking goodness, it was a little stupid that you couldn't do this in the first place

AS I stated in the other thread..

I've installed it. Had to plug it into the AC Adaptor to do so. Don't notice any differences aside from those noted in the release notes. TO run the update you launch it as a game from the memory stick. THe update program uses the CrossBar interface.

That brings up a point, how long till we seen downloadable demos?

Could this update have changed the region encoding even though it isn't specifically stated? Can someone check it out with a US UMD Movie?

Hot shit, I want to install this tonight.

BTW, I've already tried Spider-Man 2 on my Jpn. PSP... don't work.

downloading now. resuming a video after sleep will be useful. but otherwise my excitement over this is totally inexplicable.

I mean after the install, unless that's what you meant.

Also, there's a cosmetic change. The PSP logo doesn't dissapear at boot, it fades out now. I've tried it twice after the update with the same result.

Hey Drohne, look at yer PM.

HOLY PENIS WHAT A SCOOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Those fucks better have fixed the JPEG bug!!!!!!!

BTW, I am NOT installing this until someone confirms that I can continue to play irregular-sized MP4 files. ANYBODY?

They work, but I noticed a row of garbage pixels at the bottom of the screen when playing back a 368x208 file...which doesn't happen on my non-upgraded PSP.

Thanks. Installing now, at 40%.

By the way, it's TOTALLY running the application off the memory stick. HACKERS, YOUR TIME IS NOW.

I went to go look for the JPEG bug..and all my comic files are out of order. Hrm.

Animal Man #2 did not used to start with page 20!

That's what I said in the official thread. Hackers have to do something with this file, get cracking on self booting emu's NOW!

This is so cool. "You must have a memory stick inserted with at least 14MB of free space. Press "O" to continue."

Fap Fap Fap.

Is it just me, or is JPEG scrolling WAY slower now.

Edit: I encoded an episode of House MD in widescreen with 3GP and I'm not seeing any garbage line at the bottom of the screen.

Jpeg scrolling looks fine to me.

Anyone noticed those new "circular arrows" around file icons?

This is seriously weird. I've got each issue placed in a subdirectory, and then each .jpeg was converted via PSP Photo in sequential order, so that they'd progress in the proper order

But even the directories are out of order now - Animal Man 020 comes before Animal Man 001, comics that were once in order now start with page 2. The weird part is all the attributes seem to be the same, and I can't figure out how it all relates - Animal Man 020 was created four minutes after Animal Man 001, but 020 comes first in the directory listing.

I'll know more in a bit, reinstalling things now, but I can't think of anything else that would have messed up the file structure. I haven't changed or modified the files in months.

Here's hoping it's one of those quirks.

edit: God damnit. Used PSP Photo to convert some .cbr's, and sure enough, they're out of order. Gonna play around and see if I can find how they're sorted now.

edit 2: Far as I can tell, they're not sorted by file name, resolution, size, date created, date accessed or date modified.

My photo's are in order, granted they're from a Sony Cybershot. But I did run them through PSPhoto before sticking them on the PSP. I just went to check it out and there's no problems with the ordering of the pics.

I've tried to sort the files using every possible criteria Windows Explorer allows and I can't recreate the order the PSP displays them in. 20, 22, 12, 26...so forth and so on.

Oddly enough, when I look at the file attributes on the PSP, Date comes up blank. I'm assuming that has something to do with it, but everything's there in Windows.

The order stays consistent when the files are all tossed into the same directory, so there's definitely something by which they are organized...I just don't know what.

edit: Even pictures transferred from my digital camera (camera -> HD -> mem stick) are out of order. DSCF0851, 0842, 0846, 0847, 0848, 0843, 0849.

edit 2: The digital camera pics appear to be sorted by date modified, the same scheme used before the update. But why are all the comics that once worked out of order, especially when PSP Photo modifies that attribute? Even weirder, I can only get Windows to duplicate the organization of my digital camera folder, it tells me the comics are in proper order when I sort by date modified.

I also found that the PSP shuts off much quicker now, like 1 sec to power down. But it take a bit longer to boot up the XMB interface, like 1-2 rather than instentaneous like before. No biggie. The quicker power down is very much welcomed (before, it took like 7 seconds in total, now it's 2 secs max). Also in video playback mode, you can't press the left shoulder button to go back to the begining of the clip anymore, that feature was taken out for some reason.

Yay! That feature SUCKED.

Had to remember to lock the controls every time I watched a movie :p

The problem is that the PSP (or the first firmware rev) sorted files by DATE MODIFIED, not filename or date created. So what PSPhoto does is perform an alphabetical pre-sort and convert them in order by their filename, resulting in a list that's correctly sortable by name and date modified.

In other words, I don't know why it wouldn't be working.

It still sorts by date modified, it just doesn't seem to work when there's a large amount of files that were modified within mili-seconds or seconds of each other. If only I could write a batch program that would modify the first file's date modified by a minute, the second by two minutes, and so forth and so on. Of course, that's just a safe estimate, I bet you could shave it down to a few seconds and still be fine.

It goes to a sleep mode a LOT quicker now when the UMD is in the drive! Earlier, the screen would go black, but it would take 5-6 seconds for the disc to stop spinning, then the power LED would go off. Now the disc stops and the LED goes off after maybe just 2sec. From the sleep mode back to operational it takes exactly the same time as it used to on my PSP.

Definitely some nice improvements in this update!

Only for photos. MP3 files are sorted by filename, or alphabetically by ID3 artist, can't remember. It's alphabetically for sure, though.

Yeah, i forgot the mention the quicker sleep mode too. Pretty decent update. Keep 'em coming Sony.

Couple of questions:

-Just downloaded the update. Where do I place it in the memory stick folder?

-Does the battery need to be charged to 100% before installing?

-Does this update let you use photos as wallpaper now?

-Does it let you go to the "home" menu screen when booting up now? (Or did I never know how to do this...I'm talking about booting the system up with a game and not being able to go to the PSP menu until the game has loaded)

1) PSP\Game\Update

2) AC adaptor must be plugged in.

Nervously installing this... hope nothing is irrevocably fucked up afterwards. Like everyone's photos being misordered now :(.

Thank god they got rid of the L button thing on movies. Many a time I bumped that on accident.

Probably not, there's no way to direct access to the PSP firmware...also, after you update you can't go back to the old firmware.

OK thanks.

I wish I didn't read this... It would have been nice to run the update utility and be thoroughly surprised :)

If ANYONE can figure out how it sorts images, tell me and I'll make sure a new version of PSPhoto gets released.

You are my hero.

So can anyone tell us if these updates are already included in the US units? Or will we have to wait for a later update?

Geez, manga is a huge reason why I use my PSP... thank god I haven't installed the firmware update yet. I'll wait until you kids figure it all out.
