PSP Unit Quality survey.

Got mine yesterday, and so far it's perfect. I keep it in the value pack case, and so far I've used it for 6 hours or so. Got Lumines, RR and Mojipittan.

Average daily usage: 3 Hours+(music and games)
Total guestimated usage time: 70+ hours... maybe
Storage method: Soft Case(Value Pack)
Accidents: None...as yet
Protective measure: Nope
Purchase date: 12th Dec

Also it should be noted that Sony only replaced my defective screen and not the whole unit.

If you intellegent adults are having this many problems with the units this soon after launch, I'd hate to see one of these fuckers in the hands of a small child after 3 months of playtime.

Fixed,

To be honest I am very keen on the PSP but my track record with Sony products is shocking. I think I will be waiting until they address all problems with the current model before I consider my purchase.

Is the PSP really aimed at small children, though?

Considering videogames now appeal to both young people and adults, I'd say yeah...afterall videogames are still considered toys by most parents and adults. Just because sony says its marketing the psp too adults doesn't really mean a whole lot..I'm sure sony would lve to have the young marketshare as well.

Aside from the dead pixel issue (which I hear is common on LCD screens), most of the other problems are rather minor. And I doubt many mainstream buyers will even notice that they have one or two dead pixels on their screen.

Problems? Not really, merely an accounting of niggles.

Parents may buy the PSP for their kids but it is definitely not aimed at that segment of the market though.

No dead pixels and no interior dust for my PSP. Just fine and dandy

I had the thing freeze on me today and then just shut off when viewing some pics, instead of simply showing an error message.

Does it matter? They'll buy it regardless... Prolly start beating their d!ck at a younger age because of it, thanks to that screen and media playback. :lol

This is gonna be very interesting.

Wow. That's not good. I take it it worked fine after you turned it back on...?

Yeah, it works fine when I turn it on again, and I can view all the other pics, but no matter how many times I tries, whenever I get to that pic the system freezes and then shuts down. I can't see anything wrong with that pic. It's the same resolution and format as most of my other pics (taken with my digital camera).

"Aside from the dead pixel issue (which I hear is common on LCD screens), most of the other problems are rather minor. And I doubt many mainstream buyers will even notice that they have one or two dead pixels on their screen."

indeed - i have 3 dead pixels (well, 1 black dead pixel, 1 stuck red , 1 stuck white) but the reality is you just don't notice them... well, the black one you do, but it's at the extreme top of the screen.

The most serious problem it would seem is the ejection disk of death - a friend mentioned his works one and how it's basically impossible to play a game on the unit because the slightest pressure on the door and the disk comes flying out.

I'll get round to sorting all this feedback at some point today... a bit busy at the moment

No dead or stuck pixels, just a squeaky d-pad. Very squeaky. It's not a big deal for Lumines but there's no way I can't play RR (my two games so far), it gets too annoying in a matter of seconds. Does it get better over time? Or worse?

Goes away over time.

I had a really squeaky d-pad which made it slightly embarrasing to play Lumines in public, but after about 2 weeks it was completely silent and hasn't made a sound since.

I'm sure they'll want one, but maybe we are just being precious because we dont' want such lovely things in the hands of dirty children.

I imagine Sony will bring out another one in 12-18 months with maybe a smaller screen and more robust, aimed at kids.

Of course they won't. First of all it would only help increase manufacturing costs and kiddies want the same stuff that they see older people with. Hence why PS2 is the #1 kiddy system and GTA is the #1 kiddy game.

Smaller screen then. Knock off an inch and reduce costs a lot.

As for GTA, its scary but true. In a documentary following children born in 2000, they did a survey and lots of 6 year olds said their favourite game was GTA! (they also had a 4 year old that was really good at Halo!)

Hopefully when our generation grows up and has kids (started already), they'll be a bit more aware of the potential of videogames and be more responsible. None of that 'oh its only a videogame' shit.

The screen is the best part about the PSP. Who in their right mind would get a PSP with a ~3 inch screen. Sony would have to reduce the price drastically to sell such a device.

That's a known problem. I suspect it's one of the planned "bug fixes" for fireware update. I had the same thing happen on mine when I was playing with pics. I couldn't reproduce it but it was a hard freeze and I couldn't even go into sleep mode. Had to turn it off and on again.

Chittagong, you mention that the 2nd unit is the basic package, but your third defect is a broken connector in the headphone cable 0_o

I got mine 4 days ago. The only defect is 1 dead pixel in the lower left hand corner and its hardly noticable (white when the screen is black).

I guess a squeaky D-pad also, if you call that a defect.

Otherwise, Im loving my psp so far!!!!

Enjoy! I recently got Lumines and it's really cool, the overall experience is pretty awesome. Lights+music+gameplay=addictive game. Also, I just noticed TW golf comes out Feb 12th in Japan, that should be pretty awesome.

Only tried one retail PSP unit so far, been unable to eject the disc after some pretty heavy twisting pressure in various directions (the kind I'd be afraid to put on my GBA in fear of breaking it).
No bad pixels, no squeaky pads, as far as I can tell it's a perfect unit.

Purchased sometime before 20th of December :P (and no this one ain't mine, I'll report on that when I'm in Seoul again).

I noticed that my problem with dead pixels is imaginary...Now I am pretty sure they are dust particles which makes me want open the system to remove them. This sucks...Couldn't you move them to the border by using static electricity ?

Yes. All the Value Pack items are available as separately packaged, overpriced accessories. Although not included inside the second pack, I figured I'd list it there. Hence my anecdotal evidence suggests 100% of the headphones to be defective.

Wow that's weak. If money's not an issue ($50), the Sony Fontopia's are great, and the noise cancelling actually works. I bought the PSP case seperately, and while it's good, the PSP begs for a hard cover case.

"Chittagong, you mention that the 2nd unit is the basic package, but your third defect is a broken connector in the headphone cable 0_o"

my headphones bit the dust pretty quickly - not that it was a problem as i wanted a pair of sound cancelling headphones so people on the train wouldn't kick my teeth out when i'm playing Lumines.

lol... you'd think they would appreciate good music. Even after hearing how good the Mondo Grosso tracks are, now that I have it, I'm still surprised at the quality. I still can't get past the dancing level though.

I skipped on the Value Set or whatever, but I did pick up the soft case / carrying strap combo for 1800 yen. Good to have them.

Btw, playing GBA on the train is like sitting on a hardwood floor and playing SNES on an old Zenith TV, but playing PSP on the train is like sitting in a bachelor pad on a La-Z-Boy playing your super HDTV PS2 with a bumpin sound system.

Keio / 11.1. / Asia / 1 hour / 10 hours / value pack case / being very careful with the screen, using microfiber cleaning cloth / no accidents yet / 1 dead pixel (top-right corner), very small scratches (all over the screen, but nothing serious), two tiny pockmarks on the screen, sometimes squeaky d-pad

Luckily all the problems are not serious and do not hamper the gaming experience at all. But I am sure that one day there will be a long, ugly scratch in the middle of the screen...

Average daily usage: 3 Hours-5 hours
Total guestimated usage time: 25-30 hours
Storage method: Soft Case(Value Pack) then the soft case either goes in my purse or my backpack if I'm leaving the house.
Accidents: None, hoping it will stay that way :D tend to be hard on things, so I've been ultra careful. seriously, Nintendo makes their hardware for people like me :'-(
Protective measure: Nope
Purchase date: Was from the Decemer 29th shipment. Unfortunatly due to postal and communication mishaps, I just recived it Monday Jan 24th :(

machine seems to be one of the few perfect ones. whew

Finally got myself an unit. No major flaws. 4 or 5 stuck pixel can be seen when the background is white like Janurary system background color at some angles. No complains here.
