PSP = useful?

Well not "total" bullshit. Developers have said that they can get 1st and second gen PS2 graphics from the PSP at these early stages.

*Edit* sorry, that's second and third gen.

http://psp.ign.com/articles/557/557634p1.html

QUESTION: Where would you place the PSP on the spectrum of hardware?
WALL: Although the PSP CPU power is less than the current generation living room console, we are able to achieve visuals that are on par with second or third generation PS2 titles.

You and your exaggerations. This is total bullshit.
Ridge Racers, Hot Shots Golf, Wipeout, NFSU, MLB, beg to disagree.

In fact, I can name you dozens upon dozens current gen console games that look significantly worse (and technically worse at that) than those games

People LOVE PSP's features, with the movies, music, and pictures. Well I have a Gamepark32, which does all of those things, and I've had it for over a year, and with the exception of one failed attempt to put one of my homemade movies on the thing, I've never used any of those features, ever, and I don't intend to. I have a MP3 CD player, which is WAY more useful than lugging around a PSP in your pocket and exposing its screen to scratches.I can watch movies and look at pictures at home. Besides, PSP has aboput 2 hour battery life while watching movies which seriously hampers what movies you can watch, if it goes over 2 hours, you don't get to finish watching it.

:lol

Watching from memory stick, battery life can last up to 8-9 hours

Don't people realize how dumb it sounds when they keep repeating over and over that they can watch movies or look at pictures at home? And why the hell would using your PSP to listen to music scratch the screen? The thing comes with a pouch, and a screen protector is like $7.

If you buy a 512mb or 1gig stick, can you upload mpegs on it so you can watch it on your psp?

Yes, you use a program to convert to mpeg4 then copy! There's an encoding PSP thread on this forum dedicated to this process

Wow, no posting whatsoever after the initial post-- sounds like he was super-interested in getting an actual answer.

Hehe actually I posted at 4:30ish AM before going to bed (just got back from work right now).

Honestly, I didn't mean to troll. I just meant to ask, does the cost of the PSP justify its functionality? For example, I've always been a one-console gamer, never really saw much of a need (a need being, for a gamer, games I'd *need* to buy another console to play, I never saw games as being that good usually) to get another console.

Anyway, the whole Xbox modding scene appears, and I'm intrigued. I hit my friend's house, and check out all the emulators/games he has, and then he shows me how it's networked with his PCs. To me, even though I already have a GameCube, it'd be totally worth the money to buy an Xbox and get it modded (I actually got my mod done for free :D).

So to relate this to my thoughts about the PSP - in general, it is expensive. I mean, I doubt any of you would drop $500 CDN on anything in a heartbeat. So that's sorta why I made this thread - people keep going on about the PSP, though when I'm looking in from the "outside" (outside, as in, I don't own a PSP nor have I been swayed by the hype, well, perhaps a little by the 'anti-hype' :lol) I don't quite understand what's so special about the PSP. It doesn't seem to innovate at all (arr must be the Nintendo fanboy in me, but I'm not fond about the DS either), so I don't see why I'd get it.

YES, before I get flamed again, it's beautiful because it's portable. I just don't picture myself watching movies/eps/whatever on the bus, though music I do since it doesn't require your full attention. I guess that's another thing I'm asking - is it convenient to actually watch content while on the road, well for me, the bus? Plane rides and longer trips in general are another story. But the only real time I'd have to use a portable device is on the bus. For however much money, the PSP doesn't really justify itself in this sense for me personally.

I don't think I'd play the PSP at home either, I already have enough great stuff here, and I'll take my TV to watch whatever over the PSP.

Anyway, I never meant to troll you guys, seriously. Sorry it came off that way. I really just wanted some *objective* responses that weren't filled with hype about why a PSP is a good purchase. Good as in, it's not a waste of money, and you'll be using it for years to come. Maybe I'm asking you subconsciously to buy a PSP, sorta how I bought an Xbox mostly because of GAF :lol I don't regret that purchase one bit.

EDIT: Could you guys just list the best uses of the PSP, and best potential uses in the future (i.e. homebrew apps)? I'll try to decide for myself after that. :lol @ tag, but I hope you guys don't think differently of me because of this thread :-\

Goddamn that is uber. Meaning I could watch shows and movies while I'm on the bus before and after work :O

Found the thread, thanks!

This thread is totally pointless, because anything that could be said here has been said over and over and over in several threads before.

Some people enjoy playing games and watching sitcoms while commuting, taking a dump, or just before going to sleep. Even a quick glance at some of the numerous PSP topics will tell you that. Will YOU enjoy watching movies and playing games on the go? How the hell can anyone, beside yourself, know?

What's so special about the PSP? I dunno, not much beyond the gorgeous, huge, crystal clear screen, almost-PS2 level graphics and the ability to watch video, listen to music, view pictures and play games such as Hot Shots Golf, Metal Gear Acid, Ridge Racers, Lumines, Wipeout Pure, etc.

Portable gaming, movies, and manga...is that it?

I didn't mean it like that, just wondering if there's anything I'm missing.

EDIT: Yeah music, :lol how'd I forget that :P

Hmm I dunno about a PSP then. If I didn't have much, I'd probably spring for one. Just right now what it provides doesn't justify the cost - I don't mind just listening to music on the bus ;)

I'm not bashing the PSP, just for me yeah, it's np for now.

And music. And yeah, that's it. There's a folder for games on the memory stick, so they might come out with apps or games that you can download and store on your memory stick.

ah , i see...

wireless is also included

on a different line, once cracked , the PSP will become the portable equivalent of the chipped xbox

MAME, emulation heaven, media players, homebrew...

also, have you actually held a PSP in your hand and played something like Ridge?
I think that's probably the conversion point for most people.

Miyuru through the ages:

360,000 BC: "It burns stuff, it makes light and it scares away animals... is that it?"

4032 BC: "It's round, it rolls, you can move stuff with it... is that it?"

3012 BC: "It lets you put words onto clay tablets... is that it?"

170 BC: "It goes bang when you burn it, and it makes rockets go up... is that it?"

1769 AD: "It moves under its own power, and can haul artillery... is that it?"

1969 AD: "It's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind... is that it?"

1983 AD: "It lets you transmit data in a reliable ordered manner across a worldwide network... is that it?"

Yes, I'm sorry to inform you that a handheld gaming and multimedia machine is capable of... handheld gaming and multimedia.

I'm sure this will come as a shock to many.

let's see take last friday for instance.

I left home, took the tram for 15 min while listening to mp3s then i took the train for 30 minutes while playing Ridge Racers and then walked for 10 min to my university while again listening to mp3s.

After some classes i needed to go to my work and watched Police Squad (best tvshow ever!) on the train.

sure i could listen to my MD player (funny enough my PSP sounds better) and read a book, but it feels like my train ride goes so much quicker now while having a great time at the same time.

and for me it would be nice to have in the future:

Emulators
Live TV/radio
PDA like functions

:lol @ iapetus :)

That's a good point though DCharlie, once hacked, the PSP will become so much more. I'll most likely rethink this decision in the future. Also, weren't future PSP units going to have a worse screen? I thought I read something like that...

EDIT: Unfortunately no, I haven't even seen a PSP in person. Chances are I'd spring for it ASAP as I have $700 to deposit right now ^_^ I'm an impulse buyer :S

In my mind, the PSP once again justified its existence when my car broke down earlier today and I used Lumines to pass the time.

You may also find this relevant.

it all makes sense when you see it, once you've had a play and got your jaw out of the way, regained control of your hands, and mopped up all the drool - you'll find you'll be more than happy to make your wallet a touch happier.

Seriously, so many haters/doubters are gonna be so owned when they see the actual unit.

Ah jeez you guys are really tempting me too. I just got another cheque from work today too to deposit as well hahaha.

I'm convinced to get one...just I'd feel bad because it'd render my MD obsolete personally (MZ-N10 if you're wondering ;).

Maybe when the price goes down, or if I can find one for cheap in the future, for sure. I'm always up for a bargain.

I totally agree. I'm not a hater, just skeptical. I just want to protect my wallet a little bit ^_^

For movies PSP could be good if you dont mind the cost of memory sticks or UMD. For other features there's much better stuff out there that also do more. I tried divx but you look stupid and i prefer reading or surfing the internet the most on trains.

So...how long do I have this tag :-\ I always wanted just "Member" to be honest. A tag is like having a special ring on your celly - it's always embarassing in public, so it's best to stick with the default (UNLESS your ring is the Hockey Night in Canada theme ^_^).

Everyone is talking about how the PSP has been justifying its purpose, well how about this? Every day I have been using this excersise cycle and playing my DS on it for up to 2 hours. I have lost about 15 pounds so far. My DS has easily justified its purpose for that alone.

What kind of sticks does the psp use? I might just get one now. The ability of listening to music, watching movies or playing games with the same machine on my way on the bus and metro is just to good to pass on.

Memory stick pro duo. These cost between $60 (for a 512MB stick) to at least $115 (for the incredibly rare to find 1GB stick). Smaller capacity sticks are also available, but you won't be able to fit much on a 128MB stick, for example.

The unit comes with a 32MB stick, which is good for a movie trailer, a couple of songs, a dozen or so jpeg images, and 5 or 6 game save files.

Wow that's nice, I read in the other thread that you could fit 90 mins movies on 512mb sticks?

90 minutes on a 512MB stick would be at some very nice resolution and quality. I'm usually not as picky about quality when it comes to sitcoms and tv shows in general (as opposed to movies), and I can fit anywhere between 2 to 3 hours of video on my 512Mb stick.

As for mp3 playback, the earphones that come with the PSP are supposedley not the best when it comes to quality, but with better ones I've read that the sound quality is pretty good.

Like perhaps minidisc good? I've got already a nice pair of headphones so I'm set there. A friend of mine is buying my ps2 and with selling my games I could get one for basicly nothing. I'm REALLY thinking about it right now.

Lumines look hot!

The only thing I'm not too sure of about so far is the mp3 playback. If it's good enough to make me stop using my minidisc for it then it's a sure buy.

I dunno how good the PSP's music playback is, since I'm using the stock earphones. For what it's worth, several people here have said that it's better than the i-pod's.
