PSP vs. iPod, unpack gallery + comparison shots

Err...what the hell are you talking about? The PS2 is hideous.
Your assessment is about as valid as if I'd say that iPod looks hideous. Sure, some people might think that, but I just think they have no taste :P Different strokes, I guess. I clearly remember that PS2 design got tons of praise from industrial designers back then, and I can certainly see why.

Actually I thought the reception here to the PS2's physical design was a bit underwhelming if not negative (it looks like a 1980s VCR!) ... little did people know that XBox would literally be the size of a VCR, lol.

I don't know, I rarely ever see anyone using an iPod except for a couple of my friends, and they generally only use them in their cars. I wouldn't know what the earbuds look like, as I've never seen them in actual use.
probably depends on where you live.

on my daily commute to and from work i saw tons of people with ipods -- either saw the units or the white earbuds. and of course i was one of them myself. i can't travel without music.

but i live in a city (san francisco) and lots of people have to kill time on the BART/bus/walking and want some music to go with. in other living situations (suburbs) i'd imagine ipods aren't so prevalent. when i lived in irvine and drove to work, my ipod only came with me when traveling on a plane, pretty much, and i never saw anybody else's outside of airports/planes.

i think "the comparison" is the oft-quoted "walkman of the 21st century" statement, which i don't think was meant to be taken literally as "portable audio device" but instead as "instantly ubiquitous, revolutionary portable media device made by sony."

Actually, "the comparison" is the direct reference by Sony executives (on or off record) to competition between the iPod and the PSP, such as the PSP article in Forbes titled "Imagining an iPod Challenger," which includes this quote from Sony's Andrew House:

"In the portable space, there are devices that are a necessity, like a cell phone, and there are devices that are indulgences," House said. "The iPod fits very much into the indulgence and status category and that is where we are going to go head-to-head with PSP."

The "going to go head-to-head" part is what I'm talking about. I think that's pretty clear.

I have an iPod, but even then I'd rather have my PSP with me than the iPod. I'm not going to carry both (unless it's a bus/plane trip), so I'd rather have a PSP with 20 or so MP3's, 2-3 vids, and games than just an iPod. But that's just me (I like to listen to singles during short, daily trips, ie. to class, library, etc.).

More like an oversized cable modem.
