PSX/N64 games that have aged well graphically?

Nearly all the Rare games still look great (even Goldeneye IMO). They were my favourite game company last generation; their run was incredible. I really miss the Rare that used to make games.

In a word...NO. The lack of texture filtering, low frame rates, jumpy polygons, popup, warping, blurry mess on the N64. Bad art also dosn't help. DS games are of the same level generally and that looks absolutely horrible, in general.

what's up with all the hate?

Games that go for a photorealistic 3d graphics do not age well, on the PSX, N64, PS2, Xbox, or the GC. Stylized graphics and 2d hold up real well. Hell, I still think some SNES games look fantastic.

What he wrote. Remember when people would mistake the original NFL 2K for real football? Compare that to ESPN NFL 2K5.

Final Fantasy IX was seemingly designed with the PS2's texture smoothing option in mind. No other PlayStation game sees such dramatic improvement when played on a PS2.

Man Ape Escape has aged really well too.

Man I tried to play that game awhile ago and couldn't even see where I was going because of the draw distance. When visuals affect gameplay like that I'd say that game has aged horribly.

Hammerhead did an excellent job with the Playstation version. What happened to their version of Unreal?

Gran Turismo 2

Yeah, how about that action game done by Polyphony? Omega Something. Gorgeous PSone game as I recall, and pretty fun too, just short.

Honestly, I thought a majority of the 3D games for PSX and N64 looked like shit when they were brand new. The Dreamcast was the first console, for me at least, where most of the 3D games actually looked good.

You mean like Atelier Iris? It sucked :D

Granted, it wasn't super high res, but it was still a modern RPG. Relatively. Albiet not a great one.

But yeah, I'd love to see a high production value, high quality 2d rpg on a new console.

Dunno if it'll ever happen. I wonder what Square is doing with the new Mana games.

Really? You thought Atelier Iris sucked? It wasn't bad at all... in fact, it was rather good. Just a bit on the short side with a tad too much backtracking.

Waverace and 1080 deserve a mention too for their superb water/snow.

My god, that post brough back some memories

Why stop there? I there are Sega CD games that have held up well stylistically - The Misadventures of Flink may be the best of all.

Not PSX/N64, but same era. The all time master of great 2d graphics, the game that did for 2d what ff7 did for 3d, but managed to be a MUCH better game in the process, Tengai Makyou: The Apocalypse 4

And as good as it looks here, it looks MUCH better in motion.

Great post, I agree with all of those...although Turok 2's framerate was nearly unbearable.

I agree that it was a good game.....I think he thinks its easy, and rightfully so. Because up until Prism, the game would be so boring. After Prism, I wanted more. Too bad I got stuck in the Atelier Ruins....and returned the game back to Gamefly. I'm gonna buy it when I have a job again.

Indeed, I tried to lose a few fights and failed. I lost interest soon after that.

Not that difficulty is the sole qualifying point for a good rpg, but it was just too simplistic to keep me entertained, on all levels (story, characters, gameplay)

Great graphics though

PSX 3d game that looks outrageously hot , even now :

INTERNAL SECTION

Uses PSX hires mode, 60fps , abstract shapes and tech-demo-esque effects everywhere.

Looks stunning even now because it is so clean.

Give the game another run...another try.

I promise you will feel challenged when you meet Prism.

There's a level of satisfaction of beating a challenging boss.....

Never in my entire life have I had a good fight in a RPG.

Nah I played it plenty. And like I said, it's not just the difficulty, most rpgs are easy. The character development was simplistic, there were very few 'systems' in the game with any significant depth, the characters were bland, the story was bland, etcetc. Just not a good game all around.

Blast Corps:
God i hope that's on the NWC download list

WWF No Mercy
Still to this date, the best wrestler ever.

Super Mario 64
The best 3D platformer

Tetrisphere still looks good. Only parts of Ocarina of Time hold up to me, like the scene with the Great Deku Tree and the final battle. Ogre Battle 64 looks good other than the low-res blurriness (which I admit is distracting). The Oddworld games look great. Yoshi's Story still looks good, IMO (the level select screens were nice and 3D).

Vagrant Story was the first thing that popped into my head, of course, but this thread has generated a lot of other really good response I wouldn't have thought of (Rogue Squadron, SaGa Frontier 2, etc.) I've been replaying Majora's Mask and I don't think it really holds up technically (I mean, the trees are just all one low-res "forest" texture slapped onto a flat wall :P), but the art direction is still really good.

Vib-Ribbon is actually a great choice for this thread -- given that the look is so intentionally simplistic, the technical limitations don't hurt the game's appearance at all. I mean, Vib-Ribbon would look virtually identical were it released on PS2 (or even 3) now.

Having never owned a PS1, here are my picks:

Perfect Dark, JFG, Majora's Mask, Banjo Kazooie, Rayman 2, some iteration of All-Star Baseball. In the case of Perfect Dark and JFG, the framerate just kills it for me whenever I try to go back and play them... this gen has just spoiled me so much. I'd kill to play a 60fps Perfect Dark.

Also, I agree with the mention of Waverace 64 in motion (Drake Lake: SEX).

... you must be joking. those games look terrible now. graphically speaking they haven't aged well at all, except maybe Turok 2 and Paper Mario.

N64- Best Looking
Turok: Rage Wars (High res and 25 fps locked!!)
World Driver Championship (Visually destroys Gran Turismo)
Shadowman (Comes close to DC version)
Yoshi's Story
All-Star Baseball 2000
Resident Evil 2 (Higher res, better models)

Omega Boost (PS)
omegab3.jpg

Team Buddies (PS)

Devil Dice (PS)
dedips003.jpg

Team Buddies and Devil Dice look simple but they are hi-res (640*480) and run at 60 fps. They look pretty sexy in motion.

I have to give props to FFVIII, even to this day it impresses me at what they got out of Playstation, just do a summon and you know what I mean. I still pop it in from time to time and when I summoned Diablos for the first time in ages I thought, "WTF? That's PS1?!"

ooooooooooooooohhh team buddies. I just ordered this. Looks swell.

obpost: Mario 64 still looks great. Let's here it for simplicity.

looking back, I think there are lot of unique looking games for that system. sometimes the blurry textures really add to the game, in my opinion (Hybrid Heaven, i loved that game). sort of how the gritty 32 bit textures of playstation add to Metal Gear Solid or Silent Hill's enviornments.

Tobal 2 on PSX still looks great, as does the original game.

Star Fox 64 still looks good to me also

PS2 Game dude
I meant AC3 :P

And better game than AC4 too !

Been looking for it but it's impossible to find it at a decent price.

Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Conkers BFD, Zelda OoT, Zelda MM, Paper Mario; what didn't age well on N64 are games with realistic style in graphics. It looks ugly most of the time.

Pretty much all the 32-bit 3D games look like ass nowadays, some of the 2D stuff of that era like Skullmonkeys and Abe's Exoddus look fantastic though. 2D is timeless, I still think Pacman looks good.
