RIVERSIDE (CBS) — A teacher at a Riverside County high school accused of singling out a student for supporting gay rights has been “dealt with”, according to district officials.

The complaint, dated Oct. 14, alleges a Paloma Valley High School teacher drew an “S” on the hand of a student wearing a “Gay is Good” T-shirt and reportedly referred several times to the student as a sinner.

Students and other staff members eventually reported the incident to Paloma Valley administrators, the school board and the ACLU.

A spokeswoman for the Perris Union High School District said officials take the charges “very, very seriously,”

The complaint was subsequently investigated and “based on our findings, we have dealt with the employee,” said Leslie Ventuleth, the district’s chief human resources officer.

The identities of both the student and teacher involved in the complaint have not been made public.

Other openly gay and lesbian students have complained of a pattern of harassment and discrimination at the school.

Recent allegations range from a move to prohibit announcements about Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender History Month to fights over gay slurs that one student says constitutes a “hate crime”.

The ACLU reportedly began an investigation back in December into what they say is a “homophobic environment” at Paloma Valley.

That's nothing. This shit went down at work today:

Kings 2:23-24 said:
And he [Elisha] went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

I had to unleash BEARS.

Two thoughts. Schools have been known to not encourage political rhetoric too well. And of course, hopefully the teacher was fired as that was completely the inappropriate and disgusting response.

How difficult is it for teachers to keep their shit private? They're not there to cast judgment for personal beliefs, they're supposed to teach, and if anything, promote the acceptance of personal beliefs.

Terrible what she did but why would the kid go to school with a shirt like that on? Doesn't excuse it but lets be honest in that a lot of kids are getting harassed, bullied and mistreated for being gay alone. You should not have to hide it but isn't wearing shirt like that kind of inviting it?

Holy fuck, I live close to this school. There is a huge majority of Christian wackos in the area.

Yes, that is just inviting teachers to take action.

You really think it's understandable that the teacher did that?

No, no more than the students involved in the recent SCOTUS case where the Court correctly decided that students have the right to wear "be happy not gay" shirts if they so wish are inviting reprisals from students that disagree with that viewpoint. If the teacher didn't like the student's shirt they're free to wear their own shirt in some form of protest but personally attacking a student like that is not an appropriate role for someone in a position of authority like that.

Edit: Not SCOTUS, 7th circuit court of appeals. Tinker v. Des Moines still holds though.

That's my thought. you invite someone to have a t-shirt that says "Straight is Good" or "Gay is Bad".

I would understand a student having to go home and change shirts or face free speech Karma.

Stupid teacher is stupid though.

What would be wrong with that? As the 7th Circuit just held such shirts would be protected speech.

Also, I wouldn't understand a student having to go home and change a shirt that is purely political like that. Tinker v Des Moines is still good law.

I like how it makes sure we know it was a public school teacher.

On a more argumentative note, WTF mate? Why would this teacher feel it's their place to take a stance on a student's personal beliefs? And not only did they write on his hand, but calling the kid a sinner in front of everyone? Some people don't deserve to be around others. Even if she felt that way, she's a teacher and should have kept her opinions to herself. If the shirt was against dress code or whatever, the kid should have been sent to the office, not made an "example" out of. Lame.

Whenever I read that quote I have a sneaking suspicion the author of that particular section was a baldy.

So the teacher was dealth with. Alright.
Dealt with as in given high fives by her co-workers and given a stern talking to by the principle as they each tried not to laugh.

Shit, live about 15 minutes from there. It is riverside. My school is ridiculous with the conservatives.

Getting in arguments with 16-17 year old evangelicals is not the most fun.

I don't think I said there was anything wrong with it, but understand a school not wanting the hassle.

The school didn't want the hassle of a Vietnam war protest, but it was still deemed student's constitutional right - so long as it's not done in a way that is "materially and substantially disruptive." I think teachers could pretty much keep a reasonably productive school environment as long as a kid's just wearing a T-shirt with a statement.
That's a good point but still not one that school teachers would research too much, hence stories that continue like this.

We had one here because someone wore a rebel flag shirt, so there is always going to be an immediate emotional response from the students and faculty to a politically themed shirt. This is what prompts the actions of the teachers, parents, & students.

actually southern california was heavily populated by displaced southerners in the 30s or thereabouts. before that, the kkk was a force there too. in the 40s and 50s, there was a sort of unification of white people against minorities (where before they were irish or german or italian, etc, now they were 'white') during the era of white flight. even in the late 50s and early 60s there were laws that kept minorities from buying houses in certain cities.

Heh. Got into an argument once with a coworker about why I wasn't accepted into teacher's college.

My application didn't show that I wanted to 'raise children into good moral human beings'

I kept saying I was there to work and not get too personally involved.

It's professionally inappropriate for teachers to use their position to push anything; when I was in high school in Ontario, ALL the teachers kept talking about the government and how it was affecting education and that they should do this or that etc etc etc.

It's no wonder I hated high school and my Uni grades were much better.
