I had a feeling you'd link to some page breaking down the '64 Civil Rights Act voting record. And yes, if you look at the numbers, it would appear that proportionately speaking, more Republicans voted for the Civil Rights Act than Democrats. But as is the case with most Republican back-slapping propaganda, when you scrutinize the numbers you realize how flimsy the argument is rendered.

In the decades prior to the Civil Rights vote, the democrats were an odd mix of two distinctly different castes: northern liberals and what were called southern "dixiecrats," between whom the only real common thread was a dislike for Republicans. When you break down the voting numbers for the Civil Rights Act, it's really not a partisan issue so much as a geographic one -- voters of both parties supported it in the north and opposed it in the south. At the time, Republicans had very few elected representatives in Congress in the south, as southern democrats (dixiecrats) by and large had always campaigned successfully on a segregationist platform.

Now here's the rub, and why your cheap logic doesn't hold up: after the act was ratified, southern dixiecrats UNIFORMLY defected to the Republican party, and the so-called "Southern Strategy" was born. Republicans such as Goldwater started to sweep southern states on anti-integrationist platforms. Ever since 1964 the Republicans have been the home of the deep southern neo-dixiecrats such as Trent Lott.

So your Fox News-programmed example of that voting record is moot for your purposes.

Oh and by the way George Bush senior (yes, later the president of the United States) ran for the senate in 1964 as a Republican on an anti-integration platform and lost to a democrat.

brooklyngooner putting boot firmly to Assman in the name of common sense. Thank you, I was hoping someone would inform Assman that the Dems and Reps had a different composition back then. That tired mantra gets dragged out everytime it's pointed out that the modern Republican party is home to racists and bigots. PEACE.

Just to name a few, liberals have voted against the civils rights act, and the patriot act.

Actually, the PATRIOT ACT (it's an abbreviation for the real title of the bill) was voted for unanimously, much to the pain of liberals.

How dare us liberals think that we shouldn't sacrifice civil liberties in order to have an illusion of security! WTF?! THATS SO TEH STUPID!!1!!1

98-1 is not a unanimous vote.

lol. Keep up democrats. You'll never get the white house ever again with the way how things are playing out, on every issue, they oppose our nation:

-Keep siding with that fat bastard Michael Moore who said we're more of a threat than the terrorists.

-Keep siding with the ACLU and their will to defend the civil rights to terrorists instead of protecting our nation.

-Democrats think christians, considering 84% of the people in the U.S. are identified as Christians, are a bigger threat than the terrorists.

-Democrats would cede our sovereignty to the United Nations and allow France to control our defense.

-Democrats call Yasser Arafat a statesman

WTF. The point is that they voted AGAINST it. I know parties have changed over time and will continue to do so. That's so irrelevant!

Yes, let's protect the Police State of America!

And who is THEY? You're making a bullshit point.

I believe that statistic as much as I believe the "one out of three/four/six/whatever-the-fuck people is gay" bulshit. 85% my ass. What, is this counting everyone who goes to church out of habit? Everyone who "believes in God"? Everyone who owns a bible? Who is conducting these surveys? Maybe this is because I don't live in the bible belt, but way less than 85% of people I've met and known associate themselves with christianity and the whole christian revivalist movement the way these neocon freaks do.

-Keep siding with that fat bastard Michael Moore who said we're more of a threat than the terrorists.
Michael Moore is fat LOL am i rite? Oh no did he just expose another act of corruption in the Bush administration? Nevermind that, he's FAT!
Considering the neocon christian extremists who've hijacked our government are doing what they can to turn the world I live in into a christian-based police state in the name of "freedom" (how ironic), yeah, I'd say they're far more of a threat to my way of life than the TERR'ISTS lurking under my bed, in the back seat of my car and in the shadows. You can't imagine how scared shitless I get when the FBI raises the terrorist threat level from yellow to orange. What it's RED now? O SHIT

WTF. The point is that they voted AGAINST it. I know parties have changed over time and will continue to do so. That's so irrelevant!

Please don't assume all Republicans are like Assman. Many are actually literate, capable of some degree of coherent thought, and capable of stringing together a better argument than LOLZ!! HES FAT!!1.

That's not necessarily what I meant by "you people". In fact, I don't know exactly what I meant. Perhaps just the typical neocon dipshit on this forum who tends to think like him. I hardly associate real 'conservatism' with these people anyway; it's not about that.

Don't forget that you initially used the word liberal, not Democrat. Try (yet) again to squirm out.

whytemyke: The dissenting senator on the Patriot Act was Russ Feingold, quite a liberal dude. However, assman made it sound like liberals were voting against it, when they didn't. In that context, you were right about assman being loose with the facts.

Is this guy for real? :lol Sounds like the Disinformation Campaign 2004 version all over again! Assman, why did you ignore all the bills John Kerry passed through legislation? Surely, more than "none."

I totally side with Moore on this one. The Bush Administration has totally removed freedom from American citizens...it's not like Osama bin Laden passed the Patriot Act.

Pundits

I don't care, really. Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Hannity, Scarborough, Malkin, Coulter, Goldberg etc. are all ridiculous, hysterical, and dishonest. But everyone knows it already, and anyone who's fooled themselves into thinking Anne Coulter is "an excellent researcher" isn't about to be convinced by any amount of reason.

Stick to the actions of the people in power. Policy is the fight worth winning, and there should be enough (Social Security, the bankruptcy bill, etc.) to keep you busy.

Racism

Yes, the Democratic party used to have a ton of racists. Anyone who spent ten minutes learning about the Civil War would know that. For over a hundred years, the Democratic party was the party of white southerners, and consequently the party of white supremacy.

But the New Deal coalition drove those voters out of the party. It was eventual, puncuated by Strom Thurmond's defiance of the national party in 1948, and George Wallace's in 1968.

Let's be clear: The party of David Duke, the Council of Conservative Citizens, William Regnery, racist language in the Alabama constitution, Richard Nixon, The Bell Curve, and the Southern strategy is not the party of Lincoln anymore.

Voting Republican for federal office does not mean you are a racist, or voting for a racist, or supporting racism. However, it does mean that you are caucusing with racists. It could possibly be justified, but denying that fact is silly.

The truth hurts, right? I know you couldn't name one bill on your own, which is why you had to go to factcheck.org. =P

They're facts, you fucktart.

LOL. I'm not even a republican! I didn't even vote in the past election, because both candiates were morons! I didn't want a president who kept saying he'll fix all of our problems without even explaining where he would get the money from (John Kerry), and I didn't want a president who would be hungry for war and spend our money, which we're in debt up the ass already, to go to war(Bush).

This, my friend is why according to The Barna Group, that 84% of Americans claim to be Christians.

All democrats do is bitch and whine, and they never have a solution. Say hello to Ted Kennedy, Barbara Boxer, and Bobby Byrd for me. :lol

The truth is that he had bills passed. Why is it important to keep watch on which bills Kerry passed? A Massachusetts citizen might want to keep track of what bills he brought out. I prefer just watching what kinds of bills he votes on. It's like my state California... I don't give a shit about how many bills Babs brings through.. it's the other parts of her service I appreciate.

They're facts, you fucktart.
He's asking you where you got them, not if they true (at least in the literal sense). In other words, links please.

Tell me where Demon says you're a Republican. From what I see, he does not define what "you people" are.

All democrats do is bitch and whine, and they never have a solution. Say hello to Ted Kennedy, Barbara Boxer, and Bobby Byrd for me. :lol
Have you bothered going to their websites? You might find some of their solutions there. You might not agree with them, but to lie that they don't have solutions is incorrect.
