Quake 4: Xbox 360 vs PC

In terms of content, Quake 4 on the 360 will be identical to the PC version.
...
The developers of the 360 version of Quake 4 have done an admirable job of bringing the original game's assets over nearly unchanged--we couldn't tell much difference between one game or the other, from a visual quality standpoint. But the console version's frame rate has suffered in the transition somewhat, so we hope the team will continue to optimize it, now that the final Xbox hardware is freely available.
...
However, Activision was kind enough to confirm that the game will support eight players on Xbox Live.
...
We also got a juicy tidbit about the special editions of both the PC and Xbox games, each of which will retail for roughly 10 bones more. The 360 special edition will contain the full game of Quake II, so you can go back and see how the story began, and this version of the game is said to be graphically enhanced to some degree (though specifics weren't available). The PC special edition won't dress up any old classics, but it will have something potentially much nicer: every Quake game and expansion pack ever released, along with the new game, all on one DVD.

So I guess there will be Special Editions for both the PC and Xbox 360 versions. Gee, isn't $60 enough for some extras?

Also, WTF WTF WTF @ only 8 players on Xbox Live. This alone is making me consider getting a new PC card to get the PC version of it. ATI, release the damn cheap new cards soon!

I can't even imagine how to play Quake 3 on a console, let alone Quake 4. It's basically made for a PC. Or Revolution controller. ;)

Eight players isn't much. I wonder what's up with that limitation? Of all three next-gen consoles, PS3 and Xbox 360 are the most technically capable and should be able to get more than that.

That's because you're still playing on a p2p network and not on dedicated servers like with the PC version.
And no mouse or kb makes it even more 'not identical' to the PC game.

Yeah. Hectic Quake matches isn't exactly well suited for a console. Using a regular handcontroller really defeats the purpose of the Quake games.

I'm really more interested in Quake Wars.

I wonder if the framerate will be higher if you choose 480p.

I agree that 'twitch' FPS are better suited for mouse. The slower, more realistic military titles adapt to joypad pretty well.

You mean, that's because Raven Software is LAZY and doesn't want to spend time optimizing/writing netcode to support more players online.

Today there are many Xbox and PS2 games that support more than 8 players online.

Only Quake 2 comes included in the X360 special edition. It's the PC special edition that comes with everything quake.

What the hell are you waiting for!?!!!? ATI was selling X800 XT at like 279.99 or something on clearence at there site. The X800 XT at 279.99 will slaughter anything at that price. Hurry quick, they have the X800 PRO AGP at 179.99. This isn't the weaker X800 PRO it is the original X800 PRO which will also slaughter anything at the price they're selling them at.

Dammit, and the AGP ones were awesome overclockers, we're talking 500+ clocks on the core making it faster then a 6800 GT. And, omg, if they send you the VIVO X800 PRO then you have an X800 XT for 179.99. Do it...Do it now!

This must be a terribly lazy port.

If not it would really suck to have multiplatform games out of the door be inferior to PC games in framerate, especially when the game looks so mediocre. Then again I guess it depends on what PC they used.

Do NOT tempt me!

I want support for SM3.0 though. I don't think those cards support it. I am sorta moving away from PC gaming. Admittedly, Quake 4 multiplayer is one of those things that might make me upgrade (along with a new Diablo, for instance.) However, I'm still on the fence.

Guess Carmack should have gone with the PS3 instead.

;)

You are spot on the money - not enough exclusive content on the PC front. It would be damn easier to rationalize spending $200-$300 on a new vidcard IF one could say "I will play game NOT available on other platforms (aka 360)". But the way things are now, even Diablo 3 will end up on Xbox 360.

BTW how do you know that the PC version won't be also limited?

It's way easier for me - PC version for the win and I heard it's coming out in 2 weeks :)

That's it. I'm emailing Id about this horseshit. 8 players? That's next gen? And why is it that Call of Duty 2 has been reported as running faster on the 360 but these guys, these technical wizards can't get their shit together?

Heres ID after they saw your angry email:

"QUICK ADD MORE PLAYERS! SNATCHES IS PISSED!!"

Its Raven you should be bitching to anyway.

Eight players is pathetic. PDZ supports 32, and I don't know how many COD2 supports but I'm certain it's more than eight. This game already sucked, now noone in their right mind would buy it.

But I'm certain someone will.

See, Activision? That's how you justify charging 10 bucks extra for a special edition - actually put something worth the dosh in the package. I'll get the PC build for sure.

I think Xbox 360 was lead platform for Call of Duty 2 while Quake 4 Xbox 360 is just a port of the PC version & engine. Castle Wolfenstein should show what id and Raven are capable of with the 360 hardware.

The special edition is very tempting.

CoD2 currently supports only 8 players online. Activision believes they'll be able to increase the amount to 16.

IGN said:
The game featued a hefty multiplayer component on both PC and Xbox 360. On PC, up to 32 players can vie in combat in as many as 12 maps, about three of which have returned from Call of Duty 1 (same on X360). The X360 version's multiplayer is still being tweaked, and about eight can fight online, but Activision believes it might be able to reach 16 with more fine-tuning. A total of 16 X360 users can also hook up using SysLink, or they can vie in four-player split-screen, which runs smoothly at 30 FPS, and looks incredibly sweet.

NO EXCUSES FOR THESE SHENANIGANS!

No. PC was the lead platform for both titles.

Infinity Ward: Allstars
Raven: Wankers

KTHXBYE

After a generation with many, many Live military games with 16 or more players, eight online is inexcusable. It's such a step backwards that they should delay the game for months if need be.

The LE PC version's extras DVD just gave me a reason to try Quake IV.
After visiting EBworld I would like to retract the above statement.

Special Edition Also Includes:
* The official making of QUAKE 4
* QUAKE 2
* QUAKE 2 Expansion Packs: Reckoning and Ground Zero
Fail.

Anyone have real info saying that there's more than Q2 on the bonus disc?

PC devs are too used to designing network code around the concept of dedicated servers running T3 lines, not listen servers hosted by little Timmy's AOL DSL connection.

If the PC version of Q4 LE/SE comes with all the quake games, I will buy it over the X360 version.

I was gonna get the X360 version because of the xbox live capability, but if the PC version packs more punch, I'll reconsider it. :)

Wow, I didn't know the PC version had Quake II on the bonus disc... Quake 4 is now elevated to must buy status, even though I think Q4 will be a turd of a game.

I'm suprised and disappointed to hear that the 360 version has framerate issues. The Doom 3 engine ran well on much older hardware than what is in the 360. I'd have expected it to run at a rock solid 60 fps. I'll probably just play it on the PC...

Why not just buy Quake II? If you already own it, just try using Quake II Evolved or something and experience an enhanced version.

I find it doubtful that many people buying the PC version of Quake 4 don't already have Quake 1 - 3.

Wrong, the pc version of quake III sucks big time. The dreamcast version has better graphics, better sound, and damn sure better control. The dreamcast controller is made for quake III. I finshed quake III on dc, not on the pc.

Wait, hang on... I thought this was QII redone on the Doom 3 engine? That's what someone on another forum said. If this is just QII, the same thing we got in 1997, well forget it. I've had my copy for close to eight years now.

Dude.

I'm not one to randomly laugh at an opinion, but come on. The DC version had a locked lower framerate, lower model polycounts, lower stage polycounts, the DC controller was fairly shoddy (though good call on the scheme), and even the DC keyboard and mouse were flaky.

If you prefer the game on your TV, sitting on your couch, with splitscreen support, that's fine. I just can't see how you could honestly think it's a better-looking, better-playing game.

Fuck yeah!

I mean, I already have them all. But it's nice to know they care.

The DC version of Quake 3 fucking rocked, and it sure as shit ran better than my PC at the time!

Plus it had NURBS!!!!!!!! NURRRRRRRRRRRRBS

Dont waste your time. I emailed them weeks ago complaining about the lowered polygon output in the xbox360 version (this was referring to an earlier build that Gamespot had commented on). They wont respond.

You know, it could just be an older build. Perhaps its a bit too early to skimp on the 360 version just yet. They might get it up to 60 fps before release.

You know, I'd gladly pay an extra $10-20 a year for LIVE if they'd just add some permanent dedicated servers. Until they do, these "lower player-count than PC" multiplayer games are going to continue. PLUS, you're going to pay $10 more for them over the PC version, in most cases. PLUS, you're going to pay the $50 LIVE yearly fee vs. FREE online PC multiplayer. Once I buy an upgraded PC next year, this will be a problem for the 360 in regards to where my gaming dollars will go. 8 players in COD2? That's not WWII, that's a paintball match.

Very true. As someone who LOVES Battlefield 2, going to 4 on 4 on XBOX Live will not be worth it. COD2 may be dropping off the buy list if they don't get it to 16.
