NetEase is actively shopping around more of its non-Chinese studios—many of the very same ones it announced over the last three years—two people familiar with the company’s efforts tell Game File. Neither individual was authorized to speak about NetEase’s plans publicly.

One of Game File’s sources says NetEase plans to divest itself of the majority of its overseas teams, leading to the potential closure of more than a dozen game studios, if they can’t secure new post-NetEase funding.

A NetEase rep declined to comment to Game File on these cuts, let alone the scale of more than a dozen that I’ve heard about. But they did say that “all studios and projects are in constant review and evaluation, and NetEase will determine changes needed to be made throughout that process.”

This is a David Cage level plot twist.

Still can’t believe Sony never bought Quantic Dream.

Heavy Rain was one of the best PS3 games and Detroit: Become Human one of the best PS4 games.
Probablly for the best. No way Sony would let them as a first person studio let a game marinate as long as these guys take to get a game done in today's dollar values

I could be wrong, but I remember a fair few claims that David Cage was the reason Sony never bought them. I seem to recall a story of someone from Sony at a convention saying they couldn't stand him. Add in the allegations of a very bad work environment.

They see the writing on the wall. Western AAA is a dumpster fire and they want to get rid of them while they still can.

Source only mentions 3 Western studios and the rest of the articles behind a paywall but, seems like there's Japanese studios on the block as well.

Sony didn't want to get in bed with David Cage and maybe more importantly, the genre that Quantic Dream makes is probably peaking.

People say Sony should have bought them and complain about Sony's pipeline, but we're talking about a studio that hasn't released a game in nearly 7 years and haven't even displayed their new game (Star Wars).

People say the same thing about Ready at Dawn and Evolution despite what happened to those studios as well.

Sony has largely made the right choices with their studio investments, outside of a couple of low risk startups not panning out.

sony passed on acquiring QD because even they knew that a QD designed GaaS game would not make enough money with people spending too much time deliberating which choice to make instead of buying whatever lame in-game trinkets sony would have told them to include.

Maybe they'll have another opportunity to do so soon enough.

Eh....really? I've never understood the appeal of any of the Quantic Dream games myself.

Their bread and butter is a style of adventure game that has an almost movie-like presentation, with impressive visuals and richly detailed environments. These games are like modern-day successors to the old graphic adventures made popular by Sierra and LucasArts about 20-40 years ago. These games have the ability to appeal to casual and hardcore players alike. There aren't very many other major developers making these types of games at this level, so it would be a shame if they were to dissolve.

Hopefully someone acquires them like they did with Tango. Such a shame closing these studios of talented people like they're worth nothing.

Who said this, Kojima or Cage:

"The first movies were made by technicians building their own cameras. Movies became an art when technicians worked on the technique and artists took care of the content"

"When I started crediting myself as writer and director, I saw that as a political act"

"Innovation is a big risk. It can also be a big reward - but a big punishment if you fail"

"I approach video games the same way I approach theatre, filmmaking, poetry, or painting. I wish more people would take that point of view. It would help the industry to move on"

"When I started, I wanted probably to make games that were inspired by films that I liked"

"I don't differentiate game design and script; it is one and only document. I think that one of the biggest problem with storytelling in games is that people tend to separate story and interactivity. Both should be conceived as one entity, each using the other"

"Some people are shocked when a game evokes real-world issues. But this platform is about becoming the characters, not just seeing them from the outside, like in a film"

What if the choice related to which MTX you buy.

they have that lame star wars game in development that is slated for a 2027 release.
That's the problem since it would be 9 years since their last game. Also 2027 is probably optimistic since it would make no sense to close the studio when the game is couple of years from release. Western development times are way too long with 7-8 years development time starting to become a trend. This is crazy because investors basically have to wait a decade for their investment to return. Alternative to that is moving development to cheaper regions like China and eastern Europe and that's what we see happening at the moment.

Same with Supermassive Games. Those companies seemed like a great fit for Sony.

All they needed was a bit of direction and perhaps some assistance from SIE and they could've been churning out great narrative driven AA/AAA titles.

It's no longer the same Sony, say... as in the PS4 Era. I don't even recognize this Sony anymore, even arrogant PS3 Sony had more going for it, imo. LOL.

It's probably only the gaming part of QD that shuts down.

Cage can now start a bromance with Duckmann and together they will create the best console movie game ever made!

If true, Grasshopper and Nagoshi should start shopping around for new investors/buyers. Would be terrible to see them fold.
