Query about setting up HDTV/Widescreen TVs

Sorry if this seems off topic, but it does kind of apply to gaming as well.

We recently got a HDTV and its all brill and everything, but when we watch a widescreen dvd for example, it still has borders at the top and bottom of the screen - should this happen??

Also sometimes when watching regular TV or cable, the subtitles at the left and right edges sometimes go off the screen, suggesting the full picture is not being displayed. Playing around in the menus and so on doesn't reveal any superior settings. Can anyone shed any light on this or point me in the right direction?

Just to ensure it stays game related (and also I actually want to know) how do you set up the TV to play PS2 games like GT4? Regular TV settings won't do?

Thanks

It depends on the aspect ratio of the film. Your TV is 16:9, which is 1.78:1. Films usually have one of two aspect ratios - 1.85:1 and 2.35:1. If it's the former, it may have very thin black bars but you probably won't notice them. If it's the latter, then yes, you can expect to see black bars and it is normal to see them. You can use your TV's menu to zoom in so the picture fills the screen but you'll lose some picture off the sides.

what source is the dvd video ws in?

1.77:1 will be fullscreen
1.85:1 anamorphic will be fullscreen

Everything else, be it with or without anamporhic widescreen will have black bars.

also when text dissapears it sounds like the tv is not in 4:3 mode or 16:9 mode. try and change the settings and see what happens, maybe you are zooming in the picture.

if you want to play gt4 in highdef you need component cables for the ps2. you then have to set source to component in the ps2 men'u aswell especially if you want to watch dvd movies on it, also set the ps2 to widescreen when doing this... if you dont do this ps2 wont send a vertically stretched image to the tv and it wiill look awful on your ws set.

movies have a variety of aspect ratios, none of them 16:9 as far as i know. This is the reason most cinemas have curtains so that the screen can be adjusted to fit the ratio of the film. Unfortunately most TVs ( insane projector setups aside) cannot do this. Therefore bars r us.
