Quest for the Holy Relics: A NeoGAF DnD Play by Post Campaign

Okay, so....

I've been wanting to get my NeoGAF name changed for awhile, didn't do it because I didn't want to confuse you guys while playing but since there's now some downtime I might brave it out (once somebody tells me who is the safest red name to PM).

For the next campaign, I'll be using pathfinder. I already have a general idea of what the story will be like (SPOILERS: It won't capitalize on ThLunarian's little extra addition on the end, but since I was thinking about a bit of post-game bonus due to the intentionally shorter length of the story, I might do something non-canon (as in it won't affect your characters or the world if something goes wrong) with that as a bonus post-game encounter.)

If it was me, I would hit up Cyan, but that's because Cyan's and my orbits of GAF communities coincide frequently. Maybe if I ever come up with a better name, I'd ask him anyway.

Is the Pen and Paper RPG thread still around? I think I unsubscribed from it for some unknown reason a while back. Might be good to make a posting to recruit players if we still need to round out our numbers.

Its still around, posts seem less frequent then they use to be though(no surprise there though. old thread is old.).

Paizo released a playtest for their Advance Class Guide(site is of course down as of my posting. Has ten new 'hybrid' classes, figure I'd let people know about them if they are interested. Of course being 'advance' classes they might not be the best ones to start playing pathfinder with(though I'm sure you could handle it) and you should obviously ask our GM before deciding to take one.

This is actually pretty cool. I like the concepts of these classes a lot, and would probably seriously consider it if I hadn't already picked out a class for the new game. Jackben, you may want to at least take a look at the Arcanist in this thing, if it's alright with KM. From what you told me about your character concept, it might be worth considering. It does seem moderately more complex than a Sorcerer though, and I don't know whether or not it would actually be better.

Shit, I'm just rolling with a core class variant, and it seems plenty complex for me. I don't think I'll ever internalize the rules of D20, lol.

In retrospect I should've kept what lineup I currently have a secret and just told the other two what they would have wanted to play, so if I get a 5th player I'm just gonna tell him to play whatever.

Anyway, if somebody plays a new class from the Advanced Class Playtest, let me know and I'll likely start contributing feedback to the forum. Note that I'm gonna DM rule and make it so that these classes can be subject to changes on a whim during the course of gameplay.

Right now I'm working on some graphics to make a map with (I'm gonna try rolling with maps for some battles since ditzie makes that less painful for PBP), I'm also trying to organize the scenario a bit more.

Took me for-fucking-ever, but I finally made a character. I'd blame my random sudden interest in rift, but really I tried to make a slayer a little while ago and just couldn't come up with something that I liked. Then I got an idea for a character(right song popped into my head a t the right time) and investigator just clicked with it perfectly. So yay me.

BTW. Anyone looking for a good place to keep their character shit online:
Myth-Weavers has a really good PF sheet template, almost exactly like the one I used for 3.5, but for... PF... of course.

If you are feeling a bit more adventerous, there is this google sheet my friend heavily edited for out purposes(big thing is it can track your wealth by level and weight, very nice). Just make a copy of it and do whatever you want with it.

Also, in case someone somehow doesn't have this bookmarked yet: This is the pathfinder srd. It has damn near everything you need to know about PF.

Thanks for the tips, Phoenix. It's going to take some getting used to, having to actually document my rolls, and not being able to fudge the ones I don't like. I already put my Human Druid into Mythweavers (and boy did they nerf Druids between 3.5 and PF, as I found out while researching); I should probably go ahead and create an account at Invisible Castle or whatever.

Nick N
Yeah, I've been using Myth Weavers since I made Jack. Liked it much better than the google doc spreadsheet I had used for Val.

I am planning on starting sometime after the fifth. It's been taking me time to prepare a lot of stuff (mainly outlining the plot and scenarios I want to put you guys through and drawing some pixel art, so I still only have the first encounter truly planned, so I still need to stat out a few upcoming encounters after the first).

I want to start no later than the 15th.

Another thing, I am going to use maps (only for certain battles where position is relevant) so everybody should have a character portrait so I can turn them into tokens. I can draw a character for you if you like (reference to my current level of skill)but otherwise go ahead and find an image that suits your character...

Unless you're a certain someone whose image is exactly the same as another character I've seen using that image. May want to search past the first page of results on Google Image.

EDIT: Not gonna triple post, but starting gold is 2,220 plus your class' starting gold

But how would we know what images you've seen in other games? :p

Is it me? 'Cause I've got an alternate image that at least represents the class better if not the race

I just created my character in Skyrim. However it's proving more irritating than I thought to get a full set of leather armor when starting from scratch...

Can't. Dude has his own wiki page and his avatar was already made a token and shows up in like every post.

Basically he beat you to it. Gotta step up your game.

On the subject of character artwork, I was only made aware yesterday that this guy exists:

Vp-lezard2.jpg

Would have been handy to know 18 months ago, as he's pretty much a dead ringer for how I envisioned Val...

This time around I've got something from the word "Go" though...

Alright, so the game will most likely start in a few days. I had to take a break working on material for it both because I was enjoying a birthday present and I needed to get my mind off of what I was doing (I've decided that I'm just gonna avoid pixel art entirely for the grid maps from now on, there just isn't enough time to do it). My plan is that I'll be drawing NPCs and scenery as they come up (this will most likely make my posts slow but I'll do my best to improvise).

I never got a fourth player (somebody was interested but changed his mind), and the PNP thread only really cares about talking about new products that they noticed, so I think it'll just be you guys for the game. Then again somebody might join in once I make the topic itself.

Mike M

Nick N
Yep, locked and loaded here too.

Hopefully we get some fresh meat when it starts up :D

EDIT: Oh hey, speak of the devil...

How.. hard is it to get into pathfinder? I'd like to join if you guys don't mind a noob joining in.

It's my first time too. Checking out the system reference documentation, it's not too dramatically different from D&D 3.5 on which it's based.

I was a D&D noob right up until the end of this game, and I still managed to muddle my way through alright with only a few missteps like not knowing Polymorph didn't confer breath attacks, thus ruining Jack's attempt at parboiling Evaneth : /

Azih, yeah it depends on how familiar you are with DnD 3.5. If you've played that before, or even if you just paid attention to the rules in this thread, you should be good to go.

If you're coming at it from a place of no pen and paper RPG experience at all, it's going to be a little more challenging, but this group is both extremely knowledgeable and very supportive, so it'll be more fun than anything. Welcome to the group!

There are a bunch of smaller but significant changes that have to be watched out for coming from 3.5 to Pathfinder though. For example I was the only one that noticed that Cleave mechanics were completely different one time.

I had a feeling there was more to see in this topic. Okay, will update the docs. I should see if this changes any characters that are running an Advanced Class Guide class.

Mike M

Nick N
Ooooh, they've got a swashbuckler class now? Val will ride again!

Not looking to change classes, but two of those listed make me raise an eyebrow in interest to see if they're in keeping with my character concept.

If you want to change classes, let me know, though I'll leave it to you to make a new sheet.

There's always multiclassing too (although that might end up highly inefficent.)

Mike M

Nick N
I am immediately in love with the Investigator class, but it doesn't fit this character's concept. If there's a third game though, I totally have a character for that.

Or maybe I'll pull a Sarm and switch halfway :D

Yeah, Investigator is pretty sweet. Which is why I'm playing one. Though some of the changes they made in the latest version are kind of a step back... But w/e, I'll deal.

Slayer class: "Take the Ranger and give it sneak attacks." Imagine if Muun could Sneak Attack, even if it was only an extra 3d6 damage. That nanomachine fight in the cultist mansion would've went a lot faster.

An Investigator character and mine could probably be the subject of a buddy comedy. At least RP-wise, if not particularly complimentary mechanics-wise.

The timing on this is working out to be weirdly fortuitous for something else I threw together...

Also, I have a surprising amount of gold left over, upgraded weapons and armor and magic apparel being juuuust out of reach. I could save it, but damned if it's not burning a hole in my pocket.

Can't wait to start.

Is Jackben still going to play? I haven't seen him in this thread lately, which I guess doesn't mean anything, but I'm curious anyway.

I really can't think of much to buy other than very basic survival gear-type stuff, since good magic items are, as you said, out of reach. I'm just going to hang on to my extra loot for now.

Yeah, he is (I think it's safe to state our classes now since everybody figured out what they wanted to play, 2nd post in the new thread is gonna be a list of players currently active).

Oh, I might not do an image of scenery I wanted to do after all, because I came to realize I can't think of any decent way to draw it within the short time frame I have, so I'll just be making an image of an NPC and I still need to turn everyone's images into tokens.

I've actually got something on tap for that, but it'll have to wait until I get home.

Hopefully you're just looking for a class change and not a new character entirely, I am actually looking forward to interacting with your character.

Well, as far as canon goes you managed to hit a home run out of the ballpark, while playing a game of hockey. Good introduction to the character though.
