Questions about Suikoden 4

Someone here must have played the Japanese version by now, so I'd like to know some things.

Can you change characters in battle or at least outside the castle/save points?

Any more returning characters except Jeane and Viki?

Is the story as good as earlier games? Any references to other games?

What mini games are there?

How is the music?

I played the very first Suikoden game several years ago.

It remains one of very few games in existence that I actually fell asleep while playing, thus sealing the fate of it and every other game with the Suikoden name on it to burn in the very special little hell of games I have decided to forever shun, along with Resident Evil and Gorf.

Suikoden 3 could be played with only your left hand.

allowing me to lie down on my side while playing

which was very nice

i may have fallen asleep while playing with it

but only because

my couch is comfortable

I'd buy it even if it was crap (btw, anyone know where I can get the GBA card game?), but it would be nice to know.

Oh, one more question. Does a save file from Suikoden 3 do anything?

Haha I'm a jackass......quoted the wrong person. :p

Sui 4 seemed as if it could be fun, but the demo was a turn-off. While I certainly enjoyed certain aspects of it, there are simply far too many random battles. The encounter rate is considerably higher than even titles like Shin Megami Tensei 3 (which I felt was already far too frequent). I simply am not able to enjoy a game with such frequent random battles. It is NOT fun in any way, shape, or form.

If only developers allowed people to decide whether or not they would like random encounters...

Seeing as how I enjoyed every Suikoden game (even Sui III), I'm definitely getting this.

The funny thing is that even though games like SMT3, SO3, ToS and Shadow Hearts C might be better games, I know I'll most likely enjoy SuiIV more.

Konami would have to try pretty hard to make a Suikoden I wouldn't like. I'm already too engrossed in the series, and its lore.

Though I'm pissed about only having four members in combat.

Oh, and another returner is:
Ted

Very disappointed about the hero's 3d model (especially with how good the 2d art is for him) and no save importing.

Otherwise, I'm very excited for Suikoden IV.

I both adored and hated Suikoden III. It's great how they set it up as
Luc's story (he's the actual "hero" of the game) in the eyes of others
but it also took away a lot from the game too. It's half-and-half. The entire game's story was all about perspectives and truths.

:lol Respect++;

Finally someone with taste on this board.

i wonder if they'll fix the save importing for here

i can't imagine why they woudn't put some token extra in, even if having your characters carry over wouldn't work for plot reasons.

I loved 1 because it was fun, 2 because it had a great cast and story, and 3 because it did not follow the exact mold of the first two and also because it gave the whole series a coherent goal and an overall story. Plus, Mathiu, Shu, Viktor, Georg Prime, Cleo, Gremio, Chris, Geddoe, Queen, Ace, Joker, Jacques, Sgt. Joe, Jowy, and many others are just such memorable characters.

As long as 4 has an excellent story and engaging characters, I will be happy, but I really hope it delves somewhat into the overall story presented in 3. I am disappointed that Viktor, Flik, Nash, and Futch will be absent, and I wish it took place 15-20 instead of 150 years earlier so it could involve Georg Prime, Lorelai, and others from Falena (not sure if the region in 4 goes as far as Falena, but I thought I heard it did), but I still greatly look forward to seeing the island region.

Hopefully the Rune of Punishment is more fun to use in battle than the underwhelming elemental True Runes from III.

Maybe I'll have finished the Water Margin by then.

IAWTP 100%.

It would be awesome to see Georg Prime murder the Queen.

I'd love to have that artbook (I have the JP guide/artbook for Suikoden 3 and the Suikoden Encyclopaedia for the first two/four games)... does anyone know of a place that ships internationally and also has that preorder offer? I'd like to get it through NCS for speed, but I don't know if they do any US preorder specials.

Anyway, seems like people are optimistic despite a few problems, just like me. Can't wait to play this.

Oh, and Kika = teh hotness.

I too am disappointed with the lack of save importing, and wasn't too impressed with the demo, but I think the game will be a good one, and am looking forward to it!

How is the music?

--Can't change characters in battle. Only by talking to the 2 people living in your castle.
--Yes, there are more returning characters.
--The story is about as good as suikoden 1, which means it's ok and simple. There are a few references about the other games and it does connect as a whole to the series.
--There are a ton of mini-games which I don't remember, but basically it's mini-game heaven.
--music is better than 3, but nowhere near 2 or even 1.

Yeah, but then there's no real challenge outside of boss battles.

Personally I think RPGs could really straighten out the random battle thing by towing a couple things. One, having each region/dungeon/etc. have its own probability of battle, dungeons obviously much higher than say, grassy fields within sight of a town. This is done somewhat but should be tweaked to offer wider extremes. Two, characters can set their travel style, range it from defensive (lowest encounter rate), average (standard rate), and hunting (highest encounter rate, used for leveling up and the like). Also, have it increase when running, and have significantly weaker enemies avoid (i.e. don't show up) random combat.

That'd be way better in my opinion, and makes some game world sense.

Just for the record, this is by far and away my most wanted game in 2005. I can't get enough of the Suikoden series. People who hated 3 can go directly to hell!

I agree
it started slow, but the story eventually picked up! And Hugo rocked!

Yeah, 3 made me a Suikoden fan (even though the battle system was pretty awful). I just completely loved the atmosphere, and the ABSOLUTELY AWESOME art direction and character designs.

I remember with 7th Saga on SNES you can do something like that... the L button to confirm and Select to cancel... and that game is definitely sleep-inducing... one of my least favorite RPGs ever.

well, all of that's gone in suikoden 4.

kawano's (S 1,4) designs are nowhere as good as ishikawa's (S 2,3) ... there are some good ones, but the overall quality is much, much lower.

as for the art direction, it's the the blandest looking PS2 RPG. we're talking tsugunai bland.

and that's about as much as i should say, i wager.
