There was a comment in the Xbox Live Arcade thread from Cat's fish regarding the XBLA vs the Rev...

starting to sound pretty good, a rival for the rev service?

I am very curious as to what he is referring to when he says "the rev service". I realize "rev" means the Nintendo Revolution, but what's this "service" comment he's talking about? Is he implying that Nintendo is also creating an online multiplayer service similar to Xbox Live Arcade, but for the Revolution? Is he implying that not only are they going to allow us to download and play their popular games such as Super Mario Bros., etc, but play them online in multiplayer?

That would be totally awesome so please Cat's fish clarify this :)

Sigh.

He's talking about the Revolution's download service, where you can download NES, SNES, and N64 games to the system's built-in 512MB of flash ROM.

yup, nintendos back catalogue vs MS arcade service. to me they seem like they are trying for similar markets. quick cheap downloads of old or small games.

Thanks for the clarification. But isn't the difference that with the games you download off XBLA, you will be able to play them online in multiplayer, as opposed to the games for the rev?

I think what you're going to see eventually from Nintendo is not only the old classics downloadable, but "remixes" of older games with new content like updated graphics/online play ... possibly even things like new levels.

It seems like Microsoft and Nintendo are trying to approach the same segment.
But how accessible the services and tools will for the small (one guy?) developer is the pressing question IMO.

will PS3 have a download service like Rev and 360?

its really an interesting feature.

The Playstation back catalogue starts on CDs, so downloads of old games could be a little infeasible right now. But something like Arcade could be a possibility. More exciting would be an open homebrew scene via Linux - it sounds like that may be facilitated, but we'll wait and see.

Is this a good thing?

If the download services and smaller games really takes off, wouldn't the biggie developers start calling foul.

Not really, since there's nothing stopping the big publishers from making lots of money off this too. Case in point, Square Enix could make many millions, even tens of millions off of FF1-6 and DQ1-6 downloads. In fact this may actually be an incentive to support the Revolution per se. Well, to be more accurate it will especially help Japanese publishers. Western publishers don't have the same heritage that Japanese publishers had in the 8-16 bit days. But even then, cheap new content could be very profitable even for them.

if it really takes off, they can either complain or start making content.

Foul? Scream for what? It's not as if the big companies are prohibited to make simple games.
It is time to let new seeds spore in this wasteland of monotonous franchises.
Radical changes are certainly needed to meet the vision of 1 billion gamers and mass titles who sell 10+ millions.

i mean like a mass market service. have they hinted about that? I wonder if they are working on something now.
