I am new to burning DVD's - What is the difference between the +R or -R?

I am running to Best Buy in 10 minutes... any help is appreciated...

I had purchased 3 DVD-R and they worked fine... what is the difference?

Got one that supports both ass... just kidding...

Does it matter what I buy? Can all modern DVD player use them? If I make a movie for my parents, will it work?

DVD-R:
Benefits: Better DVD playback compatiblity within home DVD players.
Drawbacks: Older technology and less money behind the format means that they come out with faster media and burner technology slower. You will frequently see DVD burners that will support (for instance) 16X DVD+R and only 8X DVD-R.

DVD+R:
Benefits: Faster speeds, more inovations like Double Layer discs (8.5 GB)
Drawbacks: Will not play is some home DVD players. If you know your home DVD player will play DVD+Rs then there is no reason to not use them.

+R is the newer format so presumably it will be supported longer than the -R. By this point I believe most modern DVD players will recognize both. If you have an older DVD player it most likly will support -R but may not read +R.

No shit? That's awesome, thanks for the quick response... my Sony is only 2 years old... I will test +R on it tonight... I will buy a 25 pack of -R for now and maybe a 3 pack of +R.

Here is some useful info

It's a repackaged Lite-On 1633s.. (which I have). Not the best drives, but they tend to like +Rs more. 8x -R burning compatibility is rather poor. I have a 25pk of TDK 8x -Rs that is working quite well though (one of the few lucky brands that works).

You can flash this to the 1633s enhanced firmware too, which enables 4xDL and 12x-R capability.
