Quit Gaming Motivational Video

Don't play games. Don't watch TV or movies. Don't read books or poetry. Don't go to the theatre. Don't listen to music. Do not experience art. Remember that only the grind matters: stack that cash so you can grind to stack that cash.
Start having a life by having no life.

A lot of people are poo-poohing the OP, but honestly, quitting gaming is exactly what I'm planning on. I have a few weeks set aside for one last Total War campaign and then I'm done for good. Excited to start some healthier hobbies!
You have my support!

Having a kid will make you appreciate handhelds.
Holy Lord this. I can't even begin to explain. Ya just know if you have kids and game, ya just know man. Particularly in those baby infant and toddler years, handheld gaming might literally be the only chance you ever really have to game at all, so ya kinda learn to love it.

Good for you for not playing video games. You see how real life is better than the real world and I applaud you for seeing it where few do.

You bought five games, many of which are 80-90 dollars. You really should watch it. It will be good for you.
It's not about real life, it's reality. Last month I swam in the mountains because of the last snow run off, I want this certification to open up more opportunities, Monday I'm going to the zoo for my birthday. In the grand scheme of things if you can't balance your life around your hobbies that's your fault.

If you have a dysfunctional addiction sure you should cut back or stop lol.

I think some people struggle like they would with any other addiction

But majority enjoy it as a fun hobby and to destress or enjoy virtual worlds…what's the big deal?

I mean we should poo-poo him because it's always some dry alcoholic who stars to berate everyone who has a handle on their behavior and priorities. Like I said, I'm studying for my CISSP and haven't touched a game in a month.

Even then I read books, go for hikes, neighbor walks at night, bike rides, I swam in a mountain in palm springs early may from the run off of snow before it's all gone. I play guitar 4-5 times a week even if to play chords or a couple of the songs I do know. I'm gardening, cooking and cleaning because there's enjoyment in my household from it and I do yoga 5 days a week.

What hobbies does OP have? From all his complaining I'm willing to bet none and I think he thinks quitting gaming will make him get one (it won't lol)

You sure did get all of this from literally nothing. Your entire post was just a giant supposition. Stop being super defensive over one video and two lines. You know nothing about me nor what I'm skilled at. Frankly, I laughed at your entire post but I'll humor you.

Drew this the other day. Work in progress.

My hobbies: art, reading, movies, sailing boats, cooking, dancing, hiking, camping, writing, photography.

Stop taking stuff too personally. Good luck on your test.

Re-read your post and you'll see it's full of insecurity. Especially after I was nice and wished you well and said you were doing good. You're puffing your chest just because someone belittles video games. Pathetic and says a lot about the character of gamers. Actually, because of that I don't wish you luck on your test. Given the character expressed in your post you deserve to fail it. Humbling will look good on you, you fucking Gamer.

No, telling me quit gaming is like telling me quit watching movies and TV shows…..why would I want to do that?

I love enjoying life and enjoying my hobby is big part of that.

As an illustrator that's working on a graphic novel, I was able to graduate from university this past month as well as maintain a job in IT as a manager as well as long time real estate Investor for over 10 years. (we planning to invest out of the country in 2026) The only time I really took any break from gaming I would say was during University over the last year but even then I simply only kept my gaming down to a select few releases

As an artist I still need inspiration so many times gaming becomes that.

Like for many it is also a hobby I'm actively in the only time I might recommend someone relax on gaming is if they are deep inside of a hobby already that they want to make their profession, they probably should Spend some time on developing that skill and do at least half of those gaming sessions in favor of developing whatever that skill happens to be.

I think the video itself only really makes sense if someone is spending majority of their time gaming despite them having another passion that they're working on that they're unable to achieve because of the time there's spending gaming... But for someone to assume that they are missing something because they are gaming in my opinion comes across as a bit ignorant. It makes it sound like if no one was gaming they would be magically doing something different with their life when in reality for all we know maybe they would have spent it doing a completely different hobby...

So like yourself gaming is a big part of my life and will forever be a big part of my life I don't see any part of me that in the future will ever stop gaming... I would argue even my working on a graphic novel is because of the independence and time I gain from selling something allows me time to game more.

That was one of the things that got me into real estate was even having any amount of properties that paid me money that could 1 day substitute any job I had.

I'm at least 2 major purchases away from all of my real estate basically equaling what I get from my manager job.

So to me developing those skills in purchasing those properties has a lot to do with the passive income allows me to continue other passions like gaming. So to me gaming is not getting in the way of any of that, it is the sole motivation behind a lot of it lol 🤣

My advice to any working gamer btw, move on from hourly and seek to create something that can provide passive income (or purchase real estate either residential or commercial) Working hourly and being a gamer is dreadful and I'm happy I'm moving away from that. (Them 2 properties is my motivation to game more) lol

Chris Williamson from the OP video is in the same wheelhouse. He spends all day in the gym sculpting his physique and doesn't have to work. Has interesting people on his podcast and sells AG1 Athletic Greens or whatever other scam of the day while offering advice to the increasingly prominent demographic of disillusioned young men looking for a masculine voice.

Nothing against the guy, his podcast can be interesting, but it would be a bit silly for NeoGAF members to model their life after a club promoter and male model turned influencer. Lots of people here are successful, educated, have built a family, etc. Don't need Mr Beast telling you how to live your life.

100% boss

I like Chris Williamsons podcast even though it has an obnoxious name "modern wisdom"

As you say he was a nightclub promoter and was very successful but he has profited on the misery of alcohol and drugs from a lot of people which is neither here nor there. I'm sure plenty of people had fantastic nights as well at his venues so whatever.

It's good to take "relevant" advice from these influencers but the vast majority of advice is just designed to sell their products or advertisements and make themselves richer which is fair game.

There's a lot of luck in this life and quitting a hobby isn't all of a sudden going to make you "successful" or "happy".

Gaming is obviously a complete waste of time but you can apply that to basically any past time. Everything in moderation.

Ah, yes. We should quit gaming so we can spend more of our time with their content. And maybe help them become billionares instead of millionares.

No, i don't think i will.

Why can't you just start a "healthier hobby" right now while you still keep gaming occasionally?

Just pause your game and go do it. You don't have to be obsessive and do everything 100%.

I have tried (weights, biking). But in my case, very similar to how the guy in the video at 2:06 describes it, these activities just ended up feeling like momentary distractions from my primary motivation/goal: to relax by playing video games. I used to be a voracious reader, but that has given way the last few years as my backlog grew and I felt the need to dedicate more time to gaming to keep on top of it. I would use up my vacation hours at work primarily to have a few uninterrupted days of gaming.

Do I lack self-control? Almost certainly yes, hence why I believe it would be better for me to completely hang up gaming rather than try to continue it in moderation. Is this necessarily true for everyone else? No, of course not. Just sharing my personal perspective.

Funny how its ok watching tv/ go clubbing/fishing/hunting/skiing/ w/e else but when its videogames suddenly thats pure evil and every1 who likes it are biggest losers in the history of the universe :P

Luckily for us, guys, we loved gaming back in the 80s/90s back when it was considered 100% nerd hobby and didnt stop then, we for sure wont stop now :messenger_sunglasses:

I assume you won't go out biking or lifting weights late at the evening. So maybe you could simply restrict yourself to playing games at the evening?

I run or work out during my lunch break. Not in anyway a hobby but it's a nice break and a good boost of endorphins and I'm getting old so it's needed.
For me that's a good way to add some health bonuses into my otherwise lazy lifestyle. It doesn't affect my gaming habits or other hobbies or family or house duties, once I'm home I've already done some good deeds for my health for the day.
Highly recommended if possible!

Also, I don't know if you have kids but one way to keep the gaming habits under control is to not start until the kids are in bed. Let's say around 20:00-21:00. Do house duties and read etc until then if you don't have kids. Means that you can squeeze in maybe 3 hours of gaming at most on a work day. That shouldn't be a problem.

And if you have other hobbies too, side hobbies, that you alternate between, then gaming will stay moderate by default.

Fuck holier than thou influencer trends, seriously.

You can fall into a billion potential traps in life, there's nothing special about videogame addiction in that context. The key isn't to quit everything you enjoy, but rather to develop healthy habits and master self-regulation. Live a sustainable life, and don't worry too much about details unless it hits you in the face.

How have games impacted you and your life? Here's a good video to stop or dramatically reduce your gaming time.

Typically, if you're going to ask how video games have impacted one's life and imply that they only could have in a negative way by linking a "How to stop playing video games" Youtube video, you go first by explaining how they've impacted your own life OP.

Where's my "I wish I had quit NeoGaf sooner" motivational video?

Are these millionaires telling me what to do with my life? Just because you had a bad experience with it, doesn't mean everyone will experience it the same way. Everything is in moderation, you just suck at it.

Fuck off mate. Been gaming since I was 3 and I'm pushing 40 now. I don't intend on stopping anytime soon. I've had get interactions and experiences from gaming and it's a fun hobby.

Yeah I started at 6, going into my 50s so that makes it 44 years. No serious issues I can blame gaming for. Well during big game releases I sometimes sleep too little, but that's about it, it sorts itself out another day anyway when I'm too tired to do anything.

I'm no CEO or YouTuber though, or otherwise rich or famous. But I have no ambitions for such a life anyway. I can pay my bills while buying the latest graphics cards and consoles, I don't know what I'm missing out on that quitting gaming would fix.

People would be better served by going cold-turkey on YouTube, and specifically, not watching click-bait videos produced by wretched, horrible people like "Mr. Beast."

Whoops.

Then just leave, you're clearly here just to act superior to people which is a stupid flex on a forum of all places. I'm just merely pointing there's a pattern with people like you who have a moment of clarity in your life and it's nothing new. Focus on your art if it's that important, stop your gaming and do something epic with your life you dry alcoholic

52 years now & I have family, friends(virtual friends I don't count), lovely work & I have enough money to satisfy my life needs.
Gaming is part of my life almost 45 years, sometimes I was playing for straight 3 days & sometimes it was 0.
Today I play regular for 2 hours every night & in the weekends for 5/6 hours.
I don't watch series or movies, I don't use social networks, I don't play on my phone.
Games are only thing that relax me after hard working day & interact with fantasy world & making your story is 10 time better then I be damn I will never quit gaming.
Yes there are people that game regularly for 8 or more hours but they are very few minority.

I made it about 15 minutes into the video when I just couldn't stomach it anymore. Young men really need better male role models than this.
