Racing game with the best sense of speed?

Wipeout 3. Great speed, great track design and great atmosphere. Too bad the wipeout franchise is basically dead. Wipeout fusion Was OK but the new art team took the series in a lamer direction.

F-Zero AX/GX screams by like a rocket and yet is buttery smooth. OutRun 2's sense of speed is incredible as well since there is upwards of a mile of background context scaling in seamlessly to add visual perspective. The vehicles in both games are also unusually smooth as they animate over the tracks.

I'm a huge Rage Racer fan...and I don't think the sense of speed is that great at all. Especially the last track...

Different factors, other than your actual speed, make it seem fast. I think the biggest factor is the speed in which your surrounding passes you by.

Speaking of Rage Racer here's a track I made long ago using some of the same samples that a Rage Racer track uses. This one wasn't compressed or EQed, so it's a bit raw, and some of the synths were changed (and you'll see why :)).

Rawk da Jam, Coz I Can

different factors lead t to different feelings. for anyone who has played ridge racer's initial track extended version, the construction zone part felt a lot faster than the rest of the track when trying to make it through flawlessly because the turns come up really quick and you don't have much time to set them up.

but the ridge racer series has good sense of speeds overall: ridge racer, rage racer, ridge racer 64, yeah, ya herd meh

It's got to be F-Zero GX for me.

Back when I worked for WalMart, I put a copy of this game in our GC display case. I don't think we'd sold a single copy in the first three months of its release. On my lunch break, I'd hang out by the game corner and show off my skills on the game. Soon, I was attracting large crowds, and a lot of people were buying the game(Many with Gamecubes). After it became a Greatest Hits title and dropped to $20, it was one of our biggest sellers. I did the same thing with NFL 2k4 on PS2, and that outsold even Madden at my store :lol

Did you negotiate any commision?

commision at Wal-Mart? Ha ha ha ha.

On the bright side, our Nintendo rep was real generous with the promotional stuff. I've got tons of pins and other little trinkets.

F-Zero GX is hands-down the fastest racing game I've ever played. Ridge Racer V is still pretty darn fast, IMO. Can't forget Burnout 3 either.
