Racism and verbal assaults live and well at the Dunkin Donuts in Chicago

On my way home from my class at the Daily Center courthouse (I am in law school) at around 8:15pm I stop in the local Dunkin Donuts on Randolph Street. I am waiting in line watching a pretty large African-American guy arguing with two Indian people (a man and a woman) behind the counter.

He is insisting that they honor his two coupons for free small coffees and they are looking at him smugly saying they don't believe they are real. Now, mind you, these coupons are very obviously real. They are on the back of white sox ticket stubs and have obvious perforations. I have used these same coupons countless times. They two people working kind of smile to each other and tell the man that they are not going to take them because they just don't think they are real, and there is nothing he can do about it. Either buy something or leave.

The man who is now visibly upset walks a few steps away from the counter, turns around and tell the two working there..."You fu**ing racist c*cksuckers, I am going to go get my gun and come back here and shoot you in the fucking faces." He then looks at the woman behind the counter and says "I will fu**ing get you... just you f*cking wait...", and then leaves.

Needless to say I got the hell out of there. I was amazed at how the Dunkin Donuts employees were so racist that they figured that they would not honor the African-American guy's obviously valid coupon because they knew he wasn't going to spend any money in there store. Until he threatened to kill the store employees I was squarely on his side! Anyways... strange experience that I thought was worthy of the OT board.

The store owners probably see coupons all the time. Maybe this one really was a fake.

Simian. Sexual. Servitude.
Why didn't you mention to the cashier that you use those all the time as well?

man I wouldn't want to be a magazine rack in a dark alley with that dude.

then why would they deny him the coffee?
Apparently because they thought he would get his free coffees and leave the store without buying anything else, which is obviously not neccarilly the aim of the marketing ploy.

then they should have just refused him service instead of playing that game

and that would have been better?

why not? i don't like playing games at stores

a lot of the restaurants i go to have a sign that says that they have the right to refuse service to anyone

-Tell him the dockets are fake.
-Tell him to buy something or leave.
Seems pretty straighforward.

Next time the head office should seriously think about, 'Buy something, get a free coffee'.

What's really ironic is that on the way back from EB (preordered my DS), i was thinking about going to DD for the first time in... possibly ever. i decided against it seeing as how i'd probably hate their coffee. Wonder if that location honors coupons.

coupons were for free coffees right? Hell, If I had my way, I'd never accept any coupons...that doesn't mean I could just act like a bitch and refuse to honor someone's

Well because before I could pull him aside to talk to him he had already threatened to shoot them in the face. At that point he was beyond my help... The people working there knew the coupon was real, you could tell in the way they kept smiling at each other.

If I were those employees i wouldn't even waste such effort. If they feel 2 free coffees are worth some grief (let alone their lives), then more power to them. Stick to your guns!!!

*oooh shit bad pun*

Edit- It's in downtown Chicago.

If he had just left instead you could of showed both your coupons to prove that his was infact real.
At least you had an 'interesting' day.

I remember when I was in Church of all places, some drug addict rushed up to me and said. 'If you ever look at me again you racist f*ck, i knock the sh*t out of you.' After that some nuns or something took him away and I kept thinking, 'Shit if he king hit me I'd be f*cked,' that's how much of a suprise it was to me. :lol

A few weeks ago at work a black woman tried to trade in a wrapped game for cash. My manager informed her that it was against store policy etc. and that she couldn't take off the shrink and bring it back in. So she goes outside, takes off the shrink wrap and promptly walks back in (as my manager told her would not work).

So he tells her again that he couldn't take it, on the way out she observed that he "Would have taken it if she was white... motherfucker."

The fact that there was a line in a Dunken Donuts

Well, it is one of those baskin robbins, togo's, and dunkin donuts... I think most people were there for ice cream. Plus it is one of the few fast food places open downtown that late. The chicago loop is like a graveyard after business hours.

Why can't you accept wrapped games? If anything, they sell better than unwrapped games when sold used.

Hmmm...new to the area? I've been to that DD for coffee many of times but have since stopped going due to all the riff raff that frequents it. Do crowds of homeless still stand around the entrance at night? I swear, it was like running the gauntlet sometimes getting out of there.

He's eating his own tail.

Granted it could be racist motives for not honoring his ticket, because OMG BLACKS ARE CRIMINALS.

But then you threaten to get a gun and kill them? Yeah, that will stop stereotypes.

I traded in a wrapped copy of Splinter Cell for GC (got it w/PoP, didn't really want it) to a GameCrazy... no questions asked. Weird.

After working in retail, you pretty much lose all respect for anyone that ever uses a coupon, ever.

Some spend just enough, WITH tax, and complain that they can't use a coupon because it has to total a certain amount BEFORE tax. Hey fucker, buy a pack of gum. Or the people that spend 400 bucks and whine because they have an expired coupon for a massive 10 dollars off. I've had people with coupons from 2002 say they "just got them in the mail". They try everything they can to make themselves look like retards and save 1 dollar.

Then the people that have multiple coupons so they want to split everything up into like 5 transactions.

I could go on forever.

We don't accept wrapped games because they have a higher chance of being stolen, at least that is what I am told, I don't see how people can't just know about the policy and take 3 seconds to unrwap their stolen games, God knows I would prefer a wrapped game to the people who bring in CD wallets filled with three copies of the biggest game released last week with not a box or instructions in sight. I guess they don't want to encourage them. (Though I agree with you people would not be hesitent to pay just 5$ less for a used game if it was actually new)

But in the end we don't accept wrapped games from anyone, white or black, and thats really what's important here ;p

i can understand that. When i worked at Babbages, we took everything as long as it was in good condition with no deep scratches. There was one time, a few days after the Dreamcast launch, when my manager accepted a tradein of a few dozen launch titles. They were all wrapped, in multiples, and had Meiers labels on the back. Fucker traded them in and sold them as new, which was pretty low and it screws with inventory. i think the guy who traded them came in a couple more times with obviously stolen games. We required name, address, telephone number, and a signature with all trade-ins. i was tempted to call Meiers and ask if someone had stolen some games, but i'm sure that ended up hurting me in the end.

Sold them as new? How can that even help you out? It sucks when you stand up for the right thing, and get owned for it though.

yah dude I hear that..

i dont want to be anywhere in that area of chicago late at night, there are no people on the street besides "undesirables"... and the few random places that are open are habitated by homeless, drug addicts and gang bangers.. its so weird being there during the day and its hustling and bustling, and then at night, you look around, and realize each building is some financial or business building, and there are no residential buildings for blocks.. and then you go "shit"..

Well...

My friend used to work in a pizza place that was owned by Greeks. He tells me that everytime a black person walked in they would utter racist insults directed at them in Greek and laugh about it to each other. I don't know of any details regarding the kind of service they received but I found this rather interesting as it relates somewhat to the topic being discussed.

Let's hate lower classes\dark skinned\other states\other nationalities\other religions together under what Gandhi died for.

there's so much deep-rooted racism in this country, it's very fucking sad. I feel so bad for black people, especially, since they are the ones mostly stereotyped to be thieves and troublemakers. And the worst part is that even though many people try to avoid being racist, many times they can't help it because it's so ingrained in their psyche and in society :(

DarienA

The black man everyone at Activision can agree on
I wish more people realized that racism wasn't just a black hating on white, or white hating on black thing.... it's much more complex than that... all different types of people hate on each other... and sometimes for the silliest of reasons....

I don't understand how this involves racism.

He is presuming that the workers wouldn't accept the man's coupon because he was black. It doesn't seem like there is a lot outside of that..

Who the fuck orders 2 coffee's at 8:15 at night!? Actually, I'm going to go ahead and say I've never even been into a donut shop past noon. Let alone ordering 2 coffee's for myself..

Wow you've never been in a coffee shop in Maryland then.. people live in those places....

Yeah, to automatically assume that it involves racism just because the person(s) being screwed over is(are) black is kinda unfair to the people doing the screwing. (In a sense.)

If they had done this to a white guy there wouldn't even be a thought of racism.

Dunkin Donuts in Chicago suck this bad in general. Don't be too surprised. Most of them are ran by assholes who have more interest in talking on the phone, staring at you while they do it and not even lifting a finger so you can make a purchase. I hate that place.

Nerevar

they call me "Man Gravy".
eep - misread the post. N/M.

And while stuff like this sucks, racism is mostly propogated by minorities (especially immigrants) against other minorities. It's sad, really.
