Episode 3
The episode revolves around Rita's story, and a lot of the specifics about her situation get left blank by the writing. I appreciated that, as it generally has so far, the show doesn't explain the rules of her magic, and gives us space to understand her emotions based on how she reacts to Kaisar, and how everyone behaves. The concepts surrounding her aren't original, but I like how Kaisar interacts with them. With the way she shoots down his relentless earnestness, I think they'll make a good pair.

Rita should work as a good foil for Kaisar mainly so that he isn't so damn bland. I thought Kaisar would join the prinary duo but now that he has Rita I guess he will be doing his own thing.

I wonder if that might get stale down the road.

I see why people say Samurai Champloo but I'm not sure how much of that applies now. One big difference is that Jin was always implied to be just as competent as Mugen. Here, I feel Kaisar is pretty incompetent.

I don't think the competency of the characters is what most people relate with Champloo. Kaiser is a jobber for sure, but he's also a straight laced white knight who bites off more than he can chew each time. On the other hand, Favaro is an asswipe who's also very well prepared, but gets dragged into stuff he doesn't want to be involved with. It's a pretty funny dynamic.

Episode 3

So one of the things I really appreciate in all media is pacing, whether it is fast or slow, as long as it is consistent and interesting, I find that I still have a lot to enjoy about the show even if there are other aspects that really wear it down, it's why I liked Zankyou no Terror 7 even though the writing went off the deep end at that point.

So with Bahamut, the first two episode seem to have a fast pace with action and animation at every turn, then we come the third episode which slows all that down to a crawl, even though there is still a lot of action and animation. I think it really shows how much too much exposition really screws with a show's pacing and flow.

Granted this episode was still good, I think Kaiser works well as a character in spite of his plainness, since the rest of the cast is pretty self-serving in comparison. It's a good contrast.

Oh I know. Their personalities and the relationship between the two are why people are saying Samurai Champloo. For me however the similarities don't hold so much because the two in SC were both hyper competent and equals in most ways. Here however Kaisar isn't so much a credible rival to Favaro. That can obviously change though. Oh and now the loli breaks up the trio power play.

He seems like a gullible guy but even Favaro acknowledges that he has something, as seen when he says "he's the scariest one here" during the fight. It's a bit unfair to say one is more competent than the other when Favaro has largely gotten off by pulling some trick/sly move and hasn't really battled a competent enemy one on one. In Samurai Champloo the two leads battled plenty of times, in here they really haven't gotten a chance.

Looks like we're getting some Favaro backstory next week, along with fun times at a port city and on a ship. Prediction: Kaiser will lose again. :P

episode 3 was pretty good, we got some more development for Kaisar and I hope that he won't just chase Favaro for the whole series. I'm not really sure how Rita survived and became a zombie and I think that it could have been a much stronger ending without that last scene but I don't dislike this new couple either.

Much love for Cerberus.

Kaisar looks like he's very competent with the sword. I know Samurai Champloo isn't exactly the same, but they should really emphasize that Favaro is the sly rogue who is decent at fighting but tends to get away with tricks while Kaisar is the more competent fighter who is easily tricked. As of right now our only confirmation that Kaisar is competent is Favaro's comment during the fight scene. I simply don't want a character with potential to be the butt of the joke every time.

Rage of Bahamut: Genji 4

Fun episode, although CG ships and poor song choice during the battle kind of knocked it down a peg. Amira is really starting to grow on me, though.

Episode 4

I think the most impressive thing about this show four episodes in is how large the scale for each episode is. There's a new location every week, with new characters, new monsters, and elaborate set pieces which require a lot of planning and design work which they never use ever again.

This episode was a ton of fun. It finally established Favaro's backstory and his connection to Kaiser, and it did so in a pretty natural way while also creating a really over the top RPG scenario at sea involving all the characters and ending in a really wacky way. The action was exciting, there was a lot of fun animation bits, and they even had a random scene of Amira catching fantasy flying fish in mid-air for no real reason other than to show off that they can afford to, while further developing her whimsical but dangerous nature.

By the end of the setpiece at sea with Kaiser's ship catching up to Favaro, it felt like a Disney movie condensed into a 20 minute episode. The way the ship was skipping the waves and stuff, it was just so fun, with the music keeping in pace with the tone. The people making this show are crazy, but God bless their souls for being crazy. :)

4

Yeah this was great. On par with the first episode I would say, even if not quite there in the production values department. Really liked the well integrated flashback with Favaro's backstory. The plot developments took me by surprise and the ending seems to signify quite a shake up of the formula we've experienced so far.
Rita (<3)&Favaro to the rescue.
I love their previews, they're hilarious.

Rage of Bahamut 4

Easily the best episode since the intro. Largely because we're starting to get more background on our two male leads.
The childhood friend angle is overplayed, and I'm sure that Kaisar made the wrong assumption and that Favaro never meant to betray him and they'll grow close together again throughout the show
. Seems like the dynamics and qualities of each character are established now. Kaisar is the expert swordsman/knight, Favaro is the rogue with the luck stat during combat, Amira is the all-powerful yet gentle party member, and Rita
is the necromancer
. Sounds like an old fashioned fantasy party.

The scene with the flying fish was gorgeous. The ship going all locomotive sped-up in the water was the more anime aspect of today's episode. It's interesting that they decided to mix up the parties but it loses a bit of its strength considering that
Rita and Kaisar still haven't spent up enough time together to grow an emotional attachment. She's obviously attached to him but Kaisar only sees her as somebody following him
. Still, definitely will be interesting to see where this goes. The whole thing felt like a scene in Pirates of the Caribbean 3.

I still can't get onboard with the villains. They feel like anime rejects. Also Jeanne D'Arc seemed like she might have a bigger role based on her image appearing alongside others, but we've barely seen her so hopefully she meets up with the party later or something. This continues to be the strongest show of the season alongside Parasyte.

Bahamut-4

Yea this was definitely the best episode since the premiere. Duckroll pointed out the scale and it really is impressive how different and unique each location is. The seaside market for example looked fantastic with all the fish everywhere.

Now that somebody pointed out the sound mixing issues, I noticed it too. The ships crashing for example was way too quiet.

Amira is too cute. Oishisou~~~

Yeah, the sound might have had some issues this week. They didn't broadcast it on Tokyo MX in 5.1 per normal, only Stereo this time, so maybe the mix wasn't complete for some reason?

Rage of Bahamut: Genesis 4

Best ep since the first. No bad high fantasy opening, episode plot unfolds naturally , great EVERYTHING, etc. Really wish the previous two were like this and we were eased into the larger world rather than wasting time on the gods & demons then largely contracting back to Favaro & Amira.

Episode 4

That was a great episode. The backstory played into it nicely, and it was fun how all the different adventurous plots collided. Most anime can't afford to be as consistently adventurous and exciting as this show, constantly going to new places and showing us new action and adventure.

The villains remind me a lot of tokusatsu villains, hanging out in their evil lair and plotting against our protagonists at every turn. We even have the dynamic of a mastermind with two underlings that have clashing personalities. I feel like they do their job nicely.

Watched the first episode with the wife. We both enjoyed it. We'll continue to stick with it for a few more episodes to see if the quality holds up.

I'm not getting the Samurai Champloo vibe everyone here is spouting off, but I can see some similarities in the animation style. What I do like is the protagonist isn't afraid to off a mofo... other anime would have dedicated an episode or two to discuss killing and crap. This series glossed over that and let the MC blast people in the head. That's a good thing.

Yeah I noticed that weirdness with the sound in the later part of Episode 4 but I thought it might have been an issue with my computer or the video player but it seems it wasn't just me :P

So yeah, this show is SO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Anime !

That's a good thing :P

Show keeps on delivering.
Amira is growing a lot on me, both design (i like how her clothes are normal and not "fan-service"-ied) and personality wise.
Favaro = Zidane
Kaisar = Steiner
Amira = Dagger
Rita = Vivi

Also, villains designs are horrible and looks so much out of context.

My favourite show this season. Love the dynamic it has going and art is gorgeous! Eventhough Amira's character trope is way overdone I still love her best:)

I was going through my Itunes and ended up listening to old Bleach and Naruto openings, and got really nostalgic and sorta sad. :'(

Is this a shounen more like Berserk or traditional Shounen?

Liking this show so far and episode 4 is fantastic. The storytelling have been superb and I am not confused with the magical system even with every little exposition about it.

I also like that the clothes of some of the female characters aren't fanservice-y at all. Jean's armor is pretty cool and so is Amira's 'normal clothes'. Only the demon side does the fanservice/cringeworthy clothing and they are probably doing this on purpose. But at least Cerberus is an interesting take on the three headed dog thing.

More similar to Berserk then a regular shounen I guess, but really, it's nothing like berserk and we dont really know if it'll go full shounen later

Just watch it, it's awesome

I don't really think it's much like Berserk or shounen action shows. It's clearly inspired by much more mainstream big fantasy adventure stuff like Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings. There are certainly aspects which are pretty "Japanese", like how Amira transforms into a demon warrior when she needs to, and emphasis on big summoning spells in some sequences, but the tone is also pretty whimsical and reminds me of older Disney stuff - both in their live action movies and the more "serious" cartoons.

Bahamut 2-3

This anime has no right to be this entertaining, I expected it turned to shit by episode 2 but it's went and done the opposite by giveing me 3 really great episode out of 3.

I love how favaro is an asswipe through & through in episode 2 respect to the writer for having the balls to go through with it and not going back on it.

Episode 3

Halloween episode. Poor Kaisar stomach.

Episode 4

Pirates of Caribbean and GIANT ENEMY CRAB. The quality of this anime is great and consistent.

So you guys are telling me I should drop everything to watch this?
Because these impressions and GIFs are telling me that I should drop everything to watch this.

eps 2-4

bahamut2.jpg

the visual kei lookin god/demon DEEP LORE bookends in ep 2 gave me the shits (well ok mostly the intro as i just wanted to FAVAROOOO) but looking past that this show pretty much owns. OWNS!!!!

fuck rita's small hat & mini backpack tho

Poor Kaisar. Dude's a 2nd edition fighter whereas his rival is a 3.5e rogue/swashbuckler with a level in cleric for some extra feats.

Ok Guys - 2 episodes in.

You're right, its not Berserk at all. So far I think its;

It feels almost middle-eastern, espania, Andalusian.. almost like I was back in 1998 trying to complete the Gerudo section of Ocarina of Time. I could have sworn I heard a Koji Kondo track that sounded a lot like this in episode 1 ; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g93EqtwLHoY

I really love the animation. And its so strange for the main character to have that bowly curly hair. I really enjoy it. I should see the other episodes but I also promised myself I would give Akama Ga Kill another chance. I gave up after only 1 episode, but this right here is great. Im already as hooked as with Attack on Titan!!

I also got a bit of a vibe of seirei no moribito.. I dont know why. There was just something about Balsa the spear woman and the demon lady! Maybe its the mix of traditional fighting and fantasy! But its not as dark as claymore anything like that. Its more like the magic in this world is accepted.
This is actually how I imagined Fairy Tail would be, but I didnt enjoy that show at all!

Yeah this isn't the anime this season that'd be Berserk-like. That'd be GAROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GAROOOOOOOOOOO~

Is that good?

4 is great. Expected tentacles out of the sea but they came from the sky instead - deconstruction of fantasy involving pirates and magic and demons and giant crabs????

Maybe I missed it, but Favaro doesn't actually mention that he betrayed Kaisar's trust in him, right? I'm not so fond of the honorable thief angle, because it makes it so easy to ennoble the character. I guess it's silly to expect a Flashman here.

I don't think Favaro becomes more noble just because he didn't betray Kaiser directly. He has shown more than enough of his traits that we know he's not a particularly good person. Obviously making it a misunderstanding between Kaiser and him would make it easier for them to repair that relationship, but Kaiser being someone with strong morals would mean that he would have issues with many of Favaro's actions anyway. I see the misunderstanding as more of a convenient way for the show to pit Favaro and Kaiser against a common foe - Azazel. It might still be a lazy way of putting pieces together, but I don't see it hurting Favaro's characterization much.

Episode 5

Wow, this show really never lets up. The presentation continues to be of a really high quality while going out of the way to show the audience new things every week which haven't been seen before. Like I mentioned in the post above, I expected the Azazel thing to be a very convenient way of bringing Favaro and Kaiser back together and uniting them against a common foe who is also the real reason for their grief to begin with, and that's exactly what happens here. Not exactly super original, but it's on par with the sort of show it is - large scale, visually exciting, but still derivative from fantasy movies and novels.

I actually really like how they're easing the demon and angel stuff into the narrative bit by bit. It's not like they're totally disconnected from what happens with the main characters, but rather that the characters are getting increasingly sucked deeper into this more fantastical part of the world, step by step. It's an effective approach.

The fight scenes this week were -really- exciting, especially the Kaiser vs Favaro one. Kaiser definitely put a ton of points into strength and weapon skills, even though he's lacking on agility and intelligence. There was a really nice sense of weight in his attacks. I wish this episode were longer though, because some of the large scale stuff felt like it went by a little too quickly, but given the pace, there's only so much you can it into each episode. Lol. Now that the party has finally been formed and they have a legendary mount, I guess the world is wide open now. Feels like we've reached a climax of sorts this week. :)

P.S. I felt the music was a bit weaker this week than usual. Maybe it's because some of the themes are getting a bit too familiar, but some of the scenes felt like they lacked some of the grandiose of the large scale stuff from the first episode in particular, because the music started to feel like "we've heard this before...." and the range also feels kinda limited? Maybe it'll be better in 5.1. I gotta check ep4 out in 5.1 to see if the surround sound stage improves the audio direction.

Yet another very good episode. This is quickly earning a 2nd spot on my AoTY list. Poor Kaisar, even demons make fun of him. ;_;

I'll eat a small chocolate hat if
Baccus and his duck companion are not the "masterminds" behind the intrigue.
