I bathe daily, but I can't use soap all over my body due to really, really sensitive skin. I use shampoo on my hair, of course, and save soap for the most important areas. No problem with stinky skin.

:lol What kind of physical activity does your friend do?

He goes to work by bike everyday, around 30km in total. Yes, I initially didn't believe him either, but the story is completely true and verified by myself.

OK, if you say so.

Personally, I work-out regularly, play basketball & racquetball a couple times week and deodorant is a must for me, and for the guys I play with.

Well, I guess each body is different. I cannot survive without deodorant at all, and this trick wouldn't work on me as I sweat in inhuman ammounts.

i'm a water only shower too, only those days when my skin feels uncomfortable (when it's really sticky outside or i sweat excessively that day) do i use some soap and shampoo. but i'm 95% water only. this guy's talks about this like its new, but really not a big deal.

Getting rid of most of my underarm hair helped with my stink..

The damn stuff kept the smell in and what the Hell do we need it for anyway.

When I use to break out a lot I washed my face 4 times per day. After I cut down to 1-2 I hardly break out anymore.

Is it something that is related to natural skin oils and repeatedly washing it off causes break outs?

Acne can be caused by a lot... You'd be surprised how effective just washing your pillow cases every day (or putting a clean towel over your pillow case) will solve a lot of normal acne. But, acne is also more than just oily skin.

For what it's worth, I've been using this Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash for about 10 years, and it's been a life saver.

Two questions.

1. Soap and Shampoo are a base and this is why they cause the human skin, a acid, to become dry and also itchy if applied too long. The stronger the base level usually the stronger the soap. If it is true that going without Soap for awhile allows the human body to return to its natural PH level, which would be on the acidic side of the PH scale, is this acidic PH and water enough to kill the bacteria that grows on the human body?

2. Is the oil the human body produces on both skin and hair able to be washed away with just water? Is the Surface Tension low enough to allow this to happen?

With the second quesion I'm wondering if that going without soap and shampoo causes the body to not create and excess amount of oil, just enough oil for the natural state of human skin anyways, so that oil wouldn't be much of a factor anyways.

I think it varies. I think everyone needs to take a long hard look at what they're scrubbing into their hair or putting on their body. A lot of people should learn to be more selective, and not necessarily think all soaps/shampoos don't work or dry them out. In an ideal situation the soap/shampoo isle would come with a bunch of free samples so people could just pick up a hotel size bottle, try this and that.

But do all of yourselves a favor and buy a sulfate free body wash and shampoo. There are cheap brands out there too, don't be discouraged by expensive markups, I get some at Trader Joes.

I... kinda do this already...

I rarely wash with soap, because it makes my skin feel weird. If I'm gonna use soap, I use Dove, but like, 80-90% of the time when I shower, I wash all over but not with soap.

I wash my hair maybe once every 3 days, for that I use Head & Shoulders because it makes my hair SO FUCKING SOFT.

Deodorant... it depends on what I'm doing. Typically at work I don't have to. I'll wear it if I go on a hike or something... depends though, since you're gonna get sweaty and nasty on a hike anyway so.. yeah.

Nobody's every really said anything. Huh.

Soap dries your skin out and shampoo is filled with horrible chemicals.

Also, most itches are caused by detergent in your clothes. There are chemical free alternatives for all of these things.

Personally, I use soap made with cocoa butter.
No, there are not. Nearly all things that exist are made of chemicals.

Unless your alternatives are 'nothing' or 'a neutron star', you can be damn sure it will be made of chemicals.

Those are the stinkiest parts. You definitely shouldn't smell.

Why not just use colder water all throughout?

The benefits of cold showers are only fully realized after doing an initial warm shower (makes blood rush to your skin, better for cleaning due to opening pores) and then cold (makes blood rush to your internal organs, flushes toxins from muscles, etc).

Unless I do some physical activity and smell like my hockey gear, this is exactly what I do.

Stop using soap, it probably is what is causing your acne.

I like the fact that people in this thread actually think the soap they use kills the bacteria on their skin. Only very specific types, that are clearly labeled and marketed towards doing this, actually kill bacteria.

The majority of soap and bodywash people use, from old-spice and Nivea, to Dove and Axe, does nothing but foam up, and put a scent on you. It covers you in a think coating of shit, that makes your skin "feel" smooth and soft. This coating wears off, and your dry, fucked skin is exposed under. Thus making you feel like you need a shower again.

This is especially true in shampoo's. The chemical that is used to make the shampoo foam up, strips all the beneficial oil from your air. Coating it in in garbage. It actually completely destroys your hair, and makes you dependent on shampoo.

A lot of people use Apple Cider Vinegar in their air. It completely gets rid of virtually all scalp problems, and cleans the FUCK out of your hair, but keeps all the beneficial oils.

Anyway. I just wanted to post this to those who actually think they are killing some type of bacteria when they smother their body in old spice body wash.

I thought this too, but whenever i go for a few days without a shower, which happens more often than it should lol, I break out like crazy.

I use a specialized, potent shampoo for my scalp, which cracks and bleeds without it. But I otherwise don't use any body wash or soap, because I had a similar experience as the person quoted in the OP. I used to have flaky skin, with lots of dry patches, especially on my face. After a few years of experiments with different kinds of soaps, lotions, scrubbing surfaces and water temperatures, I just gave up on all of them and stopped using any.

My skin has been fine since. That was about six years ago. I still use underarm deodorant, as I'm a sweat hog when I work out. (Should mention I use soap when washing the nether regions and under the arms, just not on the rest of my body, as my skin freaks out.)

You should also never wash your hair. Instead wet your hair a bit and brush while adding a bit of hair oil treatment-using dry shampoo is also an option. It's great for your hair and makes it look great.

This isn't really how soap works. It absolutely removes bacteria from your body, even non-antibacterial soaps.

You're not supposed to stop showering... just don't use soap.

I have the same problem. I have really oily skin and get ugly blackheads on my nose so I need a oil-cleanser and face wash. They do help but the downside is the chemicals I'm splashing on my face, however my skin does look better. I also have really smelling arm pits which means I have to use deodorant-probably one of the worst things you can put on your body.

I'm sure-for a price-you can buy all natural stuff.

Think I just realized why my acne has been getting worse lately. Just got a job as a waiter and I've started using antiperspirant because I'll pit if I don't. Can deodorant cause acne?

How many showers do you take a week?

I don't think so. Deodorants have aluminum which could cause cancer. They also have other toxic chemicals that get absorbed into your body.

We should get San Francisco to outlaw the use of soap on infants. No more skin mutilation!
