Random thoughts on the PSP...

"1) -It's expensive
2) -It's got too many PS2 ports
3) -ROMS FTW
4) -Madden on PSP is probably better than Madden on Xbox
5) -It still owns the fuck out of the stone age Nintendo DS"

Point 5 and point 3 :

yes, it owns the fuck out of the stonage DS with... EVEN OLDER GAMES!

Point 4) Probably? which version didn't you play? PSP? XBox ? or both?

I am talking stone age in terms of performance and features. Although in this case the DS games themselves are for the most part complete trash but that wasn't my point. I can play lame games on my DS. I can play ROMS, lame PS2 ports, watch UMD movies and listen to my MP3 collection on my PSP. DS = stone age.

I own the Xbox version but I won't pay another $50 for a handheld version of Madden even if it is slightly better.

i think the big problem i personally have is i'm disconnected from the US launch. Maybe i'm a bit spoiled, but hey...

the JPN DS line up is outstanding, so i'd assume that the poster is calling the DS trash on the basis of the US line up - now ,i CAN understand peoples frustration with that, so i'll not make to big a point of it.

Yeah, I avoided listing JPN-only games for that reason. Don't know what I'd do without Electroplankton, Ouendan, and Harvest Moon: Sprite Station.

Thoughts on PSP?

-YMMV

-alot of hate stems from if you use ALL the features or not. If you don't/don't care about all the features then over the summer drought you probably felt bored with no games. Hey, reminds me of a certain other handheld I was resenting buying over the summer until games recently started to come out.

-It just isn't for everybody, most of the time I wish the people that don't like it would just sell it so they can stop bitching about how they don't like it.

-GTA PSP will sell systems this holiday

A big no thanks to Meteos, Kirby, Phoenix Wright and especially Nintendogs.

Castlevania and Advance Wars are both good, I've played both of them quite a bit. Not "go purchase a DS" good though. I'd put them right there with games like Burnout Legends and SSX on PSP. Good games that aren't great because they aren't realy fresh. As good as Burnout Legends is, it's not much different than the Burnout 3 game I played to death already or the Burnout Revenge game I am currently playing. Advance Wars is good but it's nothing new, it's essentially the same game I've played twice on my GBA. Dawn of Sorrow is decent but it's not much different or even as good as Aria of Sorrow imho.

Seriously, Phoenix Wright? :lol

Virtua Tennis WT is played when I die too soon in Socom3.

A PSP is too expensive to be portable, I play it more at home.

I have trouble following you. Apparently you are looking for something fresh while automatically dismissing the most freshest games there are. If you don't like your games quite as fresh, then very-good but not fresh games ought to be enough for you to warrant a purchase of a system, not?. Otherwise you're never going to get anywhere!

Color me confused!

On another note, I think we sucessfully derailed this thread >.<

How is SOCOM 3? I'm wondering if I should buy that and rent Trapt or buy Trapt and rent SOCOM 3.

Man, everything is better in this one. I've been playing for the last 4 days and seen no lag (only one time I had mic problems as in Socom2), it is smoother, it's bigger, vehicles are cool, the hit detection is better (more like the 1st Socom), the one played mode is much more interesting and unlocks cool camouflage suits. It's the best online for PS2 by far, and I've never seen this much options even in a Xbox live game. What's cool is that you can't really run and gun since you'll aim like shit if you move too fast etc. The more you carry, the less speed you'll have. The maps are much better now and can all be played at day and night, with pretty much any type of match. The new mode "Convoy" is awesome. I could go on and on. If you want more details, there must be a Socom3 thread in here uh? :lol

- It's the home to some awesome games such as Lumines, Ridge Racer, Hot Shots Golf, Metal Gear Acid, Wipeout Pure, Burnout Legends, Virtua Tennis all of which I still play.

- I've had the best handheld multiplayer experiences with it, and was blown away at how easy it was to get online with Socom.

- Sleep mode is great and very useful in that you can get to your game immediately at times where minutes are precious, like on a coffee break at work.

- GTA

Do people still actually use the 'PSP has no games' argument?

PSP would be great if the DS didn't exist. But as the DS lineup is better and its game cheaper, the PSP is worth owning only if you can afford both, or if you are mainly interested in PSP multimedia capabilities.

Edit: PSP is great and so is the DS. Buy both.

Automatically dismissing? I've played the games he listed with the exception of Phoenix Wright, and I've played a game on a friends GBA that looks like it from Japan called Saibyan something. Not my kind of game, regardless of how fresh it might be. Typing of the Dead had never been done before but that didn't automatically make it worth a purchase. I'm not one to splurge on consoles for 1-2 games, unless it's a Dreamcast. As soon as there's something else worth purchasing on the DS, like a Zelda or something, it will be mine. That or the 2D Mario Bros, that one counts as like 5 games.

Nice, SOCOM 3 I guess it is then. I was in the beta and it sucked, hit detection was horrible, mics rarely worked. Question, do your teammates names appear above their head like SOCOM 1 and 2? They did in the beta but only haf the time. So you'd see someone without a name above them and fire thinking it was an enemy but it was a teammate. Then the next time you see someone you take your time and line up your crosshair, get their name and check if they're on your team or not and then they kill you.

Point taken. Didn't sound to me like you had played them all. I withdraw my argument. :)

I saw this the 1st two days, I happens sometimes but most of the times the names are there.. but yeah it does happen. The mics worked 98% of the time I played (1 game I didn't hear 2 of my teammates for no reason), I saw some people with mic problems but they were over once they found out that had to open some ports on their router. It rocks and it will rock even more once they'll fix up the little bugs with a patch.

- I actually like the analog nub, I think its nice but to each his own.
- Watching movies on it is heaven, no matter what you say about Ipod video it'll never have this quality of a screen.
- I use it as my music player and its pretty good, a little big though...
- Games are awesome, having a portable and true to the console like Midnight Club and GTA is a dream come true
- Is my most played gaming plataform of the moment and I believe it'll continue to be that way. I barely have time to play on consoles so a quick- gaming session on PSP is always welcome.
- The games are looking like "almost" second generation PS2 games, I really wanna see how they'll look in 3 years and when the 333 mhz mode is unlocked.
- I don't regret buying it AT ALL , the PSP is my favorite portable ever, not only because of the games but also for its features and potential.

Don't get me wrong, I don't regret buying mine (<$200 for psp and accessories, MGAcid, two 32mb cards and Hero UMD) but the analog stick is just located too low and that makes playing games that require it a damn chore.

I enjoy music, UMDs and anime rips on it but I think the games I'll have the most fun with will be rpgs/strat rpgs cos I won't need the damn analog >_<

Meteos, Kirby, Phoenix Wright, Nintendogs, Castlevania, and Advance Wars DS say hi.'

I know the PSP lineup kinda sux besides some games but is this supposed to be an impressive list?

dont worry iam used to stupids on forums bashing Foreigners for his use on english,it will be funny to have these moroons (like you) writing on german/french/italian on european forums, nothing its more patetic or lame to bash ppl who at least is triying to use your language on a forum

I like my PSP, but here's some obvious flaws in its design.

-I, like a lot of other people, would have preferred if the nub was in place of the D-Pad and the D-Pad where the nub would be. It makes controlling 3D games so hard when I have to lower my thumb and not have its position be natural.

-The PSP is so damn sexy I have to wipe it down after I play it. What the hell, Sony? Fingerprints annoy me to hell, especially when seen on an expensive thing like that. And handhelds are something you can pass to a friend to play for a while, too. It's just really annoying.

-Sony should get rid of their goddamn segmented D-Pad. Get a real D-Pad, please!

-Loadings a bitch.

On the game side...

-A couple of gems like Lumines and Wipeout Pure.

-A line-up plagued by too many ports and small amounts of original or exclusive games.

-Small amount of Japanese support to brag about. There's Loco Roco, Ghouls N Ghosts, Crisis Core, Devil May Cry, and a couple others, but there's just too many fucking sports and racing games coming out for it. As gamers on freaking message boards, I can safely say that more of us want platformers, RPGs, etc. than yearly sports games.

THE HARDWARE / OVERALL SENTIMENTS
+ Nice piece of kit, Sony are obviously taking a hit on it. Kudos to them.
+ Screen is fucking amazing
+ MagicGate compatible... like my K750i and other devices. Neat!
+ The firmware downgrade was worth the wait. I was starting to get bored, but I mess around with it a little more now.
- Forcing upgrades on me will be met with disdain for sure.
- The machine cost me ÂŁ230 with one game. It cost me more when I consider memory sticks and other games. I sure could do with that money now. Hello video iPod, Xbox360 etc.... damn it!
- Gorgeous screen is constantly open to the elements
- Material looks great... when its clean. Fingerprints fucking suck.
- Like DS, it is the size of a small brick. I can put it in a coat pocket, but not many other kinds of pocket. Not if the piece of clothing fits snug, or I plan on sitting down.
- Do I need this AND a PS2? AND a DS? AND a GBA? AND a GC? AND an Xbox? I'm seriously weighing it up. I'm on a train 20 minutes a day, and I'm not even playing it much then.

GAMES
+ Lots of games
+ Intrigued by games coming down the line. GTA LCS, Loco Roco, Katamari, Tales, etc
+ Keeping an eye on homebrew apps. Especially better emus.
- Lots of games that I don't want. Like Medievil for example. Or one of the dozen or so racing games. I'm not a big sports fan either, although I'll probably pick up PES or FIFA. I want more puzzle games, quirky platform and action/adventure titles and more party-game style software. Something quick, easy and fun.
- Two Metal Gear games that will be available with any immediacy to me are in the vain of SRPGs.
- Not as much online fun available as I'd anticipated.

UMD MOVIES
+ Lots of UMDs
+ When you've got the money, its more convenient to buy than rip a movie.
- I don't have the money. So I'm going to rip things over buying them. Fuck UMDs.
- Lots of UMDs means lots of movies I can't play on anything but the PSP, yet they cost similar amounts to DVDs in many cases.
- UMDs take up shelf space in game stores that could be going to PSP GAMES. But hey Sony, do whatever you want. Its your shout.

Both are actually true. But we play games not technology.

Which reminds me, the recent thread of thinking on the PSP reminds me of the old usenet threads on the N64 when it had absolutely nothing good coming out for it and people would make lists of games in development, many of them were japan only and had no firm release dates to excite people. It's certainly a bit of a morale booster.

My only complaint (which is really a blessing), is that most of the games end up sucking for reasons outside of gameplay (read: load times). But ripping the game and playing it off the MS remedies that, in addition to giving you the option to run the game faster (@ 333mhz).

ATV Offroad Fury is a whole new, and much more enjoyable game as a result. Same w/ most PSP games... Which gives people much more incentive to acquire games via 'other means'.

Also, the screen blur... Knowing Sony, they'll replace the screen in newer models without saying anything. Some devs know how to avoid the blur, while others fall flat on their face in that regard.

Oh, you mean like the Jarrod game list thread for DS and PSP games?

I think I'm going to sell mine if GTA isn't fantastic. I respect the reasons that a lot of people love it, but I find it rather boring as a games machine and not that sufficient as a media tool. I'm on a trip right now and basically I limited myself to 2 pocket gadgets, the DS and the PSP. I've been playing a bunch of the new DS games which rule, and wish I had brought my mp3 player instead of the PSP. I'm just tired of buying PSP games like Burnout, SSX, Madden, etc. that feel like watered down versions of what I would rather play on console. There's no way I'm buying Socom for it and I love the series. Since that seems to be the type of game they're focusing on (console substitutes) GTA will be the last hurrah for me.

I'm not hurt by buying several interesting game machines, and the PSP does have it's high points but it's not worth keeping with what I can get for an older firmware device in perfect condition. I'll put the money toward the 360 or some sort of video/ipod device.

It's funny to me how much I disliked the DS in comparison, especially because of the tech but for a device like this it truly is about the games. I'm not very pleased with what's there and what's coming out. The PSP 'anticipation' threads are fairly boring.
