Borderlands 4 Would Still Be "Worth It" At 5X The Price, Gearbox Boss Says

The online chatter about the game's price point does not matter at the end of the day, Randy Pitchford says.
Article:
Pitchford went on to say that he is "thrilled" by the decision to price Borderlands 4 at $70 for the standard edition. He said he understands there is currently a cost-of-living crisis and some people might not have as much money to spend on entertainment, but he believes Borderlands 4 overdelivers on value relative to the cost. To make his point, Pitchford said 2K could have charged much more and it still would have represented good value.

"I want everybody to play it. I want as many people as possible to play it. There might be a little bit of friction there for some people as prices go up, but I also know that from a value perspective, they probably could have charged five times as much and it would have felt worth it," he said. "And some people might have been willing to pay that. I don't know if I would have. I want it to be as cheap as possible."

Am I the only one who finds these games kind of boring after, like, 20 hours or so? I never get interested in future DLC or anything just like to move on to the next game in my library. I can't imagine people spend 100's of hours in these games.

Everytime the king of grease speaks my interest in B4 decreases. I imagine 2k tried to muzzle him but it sliding off.
I hate that Gearbox owns risk of rain now.

P.R needs to duct tape this twats mouth shut. The more he talks the more I hate Borderlands, even the few I liked. This 1 person is becoming the same off-putting never touch the game symbol like logos from Ubisoft and E.A.

Imagine working with this donkey. I can picture it constantly being like The Simpsons episode were Smithers announces a dog got ran over and killed, then Homer comes out and repeatably asks "are you ready to laugh?"

Am I the only one sitting here thinking it was just a clumsy way to say there is a shitload of content in the game? Apologies for not joining in the stoning.

Open world gameplay looks boring. I don't think this was a good decision. The fact that he's trying hard to extract money shows lack of confidence in his product.

From the end of the quote:

"...some people might have been willing to pay that. I don't know if I would have. I want it to be as cheap as possible."

So he's only saying that they could have charged 5x the price because he's trying to promote his game and tell everyone how awesome it is.

Also, he says "they" chose the price. So it doesn't sound like it was his decision at all, he's just doing damage limitation.

Welcome to the Player Haters Ball.

I didn't even find it clumsy. He just talks like a dude and people can't handle that anymore. They crave vanilla PR statements written by a team of lawyers.

I just don't know why he keeps talking about this part of the game, it only ever gets him hate, and the only way to reverse that is for the game to just be good at release.

AAA in general isn't in a strong position to say they're offering great value, when games regularly come out broken and/or have performance issues, and having X hours of content means nothing if people get bored before the end of it.

Oh it was definitely that, anyone with half a brain would know better than to leave the door even a little bit open to being heard to double down. But his point to me clearly was there is heaps of content, way more than needed to justify the price even if it was higher. But the idea that you opt out of the game because of a couple of comments from this guy is just being a reverse activist. I mean who cares? All I care about is being entertained. I am reasonably confident BL4 will do that better than any entries prior. No doubt some aspects wont stick the landing with me, but very few games are ever perfect.

Someone at Gearbox should muster the courage to put a muzzle on Pitchford because every time he opens his mouth he comes across as a raging asshole and it directly affects the image of the entire studio. Even when he's trying to make a positive argument for his game, such as this case where he's trying to point out the supposed amount of content, he still comes across as an out-of-touch, greedy douchebag.

The more he talks the more it makes people wait for the inevitable sale where the Super Deluxe version of BL4 will be less than half price in 6 months.

He just talks like a dude and people can't handle that anymore.

No, he talks like someone who never took a public speaking course and just says whatever shit comes to the top of his head, without any filter whatsoever.

I don't think he understands the financial limitations of other people or really much at all, actually.
