Rants from a disillusioned aging gamer…

I get tired of developers releasing unfinished games and patching the hell out of them.

I am tired of patching a whole list of games all the time in Steam.

It is getting stupid.

Retro gaming and customizing Arcade sticks (pre-built store bought stuff is mostly lame fuck hori) are the only thing I'm happy with these days

Biggest issue I see often is some of you guys stress over most pettiest shit and making acting playing games harder for yourself.

At some point maybe some of you just need to face the fact that you no longer like gaming and you better off just finding different hobby all together.

It's all true.
I don't know what it is but software in general has been on a sharp decline in quality for a while now... I'm not an engineer so I wouldn't dare try to explain why, but it's perceivable.

But there are plenty of great games still, they're harder to find now.

I feel disillusioned as well, mainly as I was a massive Playstation fan and no longer care for the brand. I grew up with Playstation, got my my first PSX in 1995, after having saved up for it for almost two years. My mom pitched in the last amount of cash I needed and I got it for my 14th birthday. I was immediately in love. Before I was mainly a Sega fan, casually playing stuff like Sonic and EAs NHL-games with my friends. Along came Playstation and changed my entire world view of what games could be. The first game to really knock me out of my socks was Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. It was a mature and epic vampire action-RPG with awesome voice acting, FMV graphics, story and and violence, unlike anything I've ever played in my entire life. And so it continued. Resident Evil. Final Fantasy 7, 8 and 9. Alundra. Suikoden. The hits just kept coming. Playstation was my main video game brand going forward. I bought PS2, PS3, PS4 and PS5, and kept adding games to my ever growing library. I had about 500 physical games across all systems. I supported Sony through the highs and lows, thinking they would always stand tall even when shit hits the fan.

Enter PS5 era. In the beginning it was awesome. That console reveal with Demon's Souls was fucking magical. I was so hyped. And it delivered. The console was a fantastic piece of hardware. No load times. Excellent backwards compatibility. The initial games with DS, Forbidden West, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart and Returnal was awesome. Then I started to notice the shift happen. The messaging. The downplay of single player games and hyping up live service. First they shut down Japan Studio. No more cool games like Bloodborne, Puppeteer, Gravity Rush, Shadow of the Colossus or The Last Guardian. Everything had to be AAA blockbuster now. Que Concord, Fairgames and a slew of other shit games Sony bankrolled without question, leading to massive disappointment for me. And then you learned that Sony wasted their premiere studios on GaaS games, with the biggest disappointment being Bluepoint being wasted for nearly 5 years. I LOVED Demon´s Souls. Played it religiously the first year of PS5. I thought their next game would be remastering or remaking another PS classic, like Bloodborne. And then it turned out they were forced to do a live service God of War that was cancelled.

And then you have their studios engaging with activists, political drama, contempt for their fans, lukewarm sequels and just downright mediocrity and I feel like Playstation is not for me anymore. Add to that Sonys excessive price gouging on their PSN store, with price hikes on PS Plus and their hardware and controllers, fleecing their customers with every breath they take. For the past several years I´ve seen myself selling off my PS collection of games, turning my eye to Nintendo and Valve, investing in their ecosystems. The Switch 2 and Valves upcoming Steam Machine has got me hyped in ways PS5 has failed to generate beyond its first few years. And it honestly feels shit. I can´t believe Sony threw away this brand into the toilet like this. I don´t think I´ve ever been this disappointed with a video game company before. It was my first true love in video games and I saw myself supporting PS through thick and thin. Now it´s all gone. Wasted because Sony thought they were invincible and that their fans would lap up anything they threw at them.

Fuck everyone in charge of the Playstation brand this generation. You are complete and utter trash.

I get so sick of this sentiment, and don't know if it's just ignorance or trolling. You'd really suggest people give up the hobby for not liking new games and what, throw the actual games they own and like in the trash or sell them? Why?

There are plenty of good games coming out almost every year, if people really cant find games to enjoy then yes my suggestion is they should look for different hobby or forever just play retro games.

Should have just said that from the start. I've spent thousands on a very large collection of games I treasure, and I'm not about to get rid of them and "find another hobby" just because I'm not going to continue being a consumer slave to an industry that hates my guts.

I would say you do what you have to......as for me there are still many games out there I enjoy.

There's a chance I'll buy the next Nintendo or Sony system IF they are handheld hybrids, and get a lot of support, and continue some form of physical games, but those are unlikely, but we'll see.

Personally speaking, I don't know why anyone would want to buy the next PS system if it's a $600-$700 traditional system with hardly any first party support and only survives with third party games.

As long as Nintendo continues makes the games I like I will buy their system not matter its hybrid or not.....games all I care about.

I myself not big fan of Sony's first party this gen but we do get killer 3rd party game that dont come out on Nintendo systems which is the only reason I keep my PS5 around.

For me as long as I get the games I want I'm happy, that all I care about thats all ever going to care about.

I'm an old gamer but I love the Switch 2. For a long time I thought about getting a Steam deck, but held out with the Switch 2 on the way. The option of playing on my big TV, or chilling in my bed with the Switch 2 which has a very nice screen, is an excellent experience. The Switch 1 was good but it felt so underpowered.

My tastes are very niche though - a small subset of JRPG's, and some visual novels interest me.

Heres my schizo rant, I literally cant finish a single game anymore. I have no enthusiasm. Whatever spark I had died somewhere in the late 2000's to early 2010's. The era of wasting entire weekends on a videogame is long gone. Maybe I changed, maybe modern games are all the same, honestly who knows. These days I just kinda "play", if you can even call it that. I just play HELI-X with my overpriced $1,000 Mikado transmitter, like practicing to play the guitar or some other instrument.

All the crap on my desktop is basically decoration at this point. Half those icons haven't been clicked on since forever. It's pathetic and I really gotta stop pretending I'm gonna get back into any of it. If I dont run a game for months, why the hell is it even installed? Anyways, dont let my doomer nonsense stop you from enjoying games.

I am honestly kinda the same, I think a lot of people are, although I do go through phases. Had a great time with my wife and kids playing local 4 player co-op and MP games every weekend for a good couple of months. Spent a lot of time getting emulators working, and like to play a few credits on some old arcade games. Played a ton of Split Second. Clair Obscur I fell in love with and desperately wanted to find a game that would scratch that same itch but couldn't.
I think my main problem is that modern games are often too story heavy (and I think all game stories suck to a certain extent) or/and overly and needlessly complex.

My dualsense doesn't also function as a pocket pussy. Fuck this gen!

But seriously, I don't the understand the dire cynicism some like to wallow in despite having been gaming in some form for a long ass time. We've never had an abundance of varied, fantastic games of the indie, AA, AAA kind plus all the really great F2P stuff out there. And while games are pricey, they haven't really gone up much since I was buying carts for the Sega Genesis and N64. Game subs keep me going for a relatively low price with a huge library that's still significantly cheaper than paying an MMO sub without even mentioning having to buy their expansions. PC keeps going with fantastic sales with enough indies to drown in. Gaming remains one of the cheapest options providing a staggering, and often embarrassing amount of time to money value.

The post Covid bubble retraction sucks. I get why people are leery of consolidations. AI remains scary to people. XBox is now Crocbox. Sure, lots of stuff and more to not be thrilled with, but it's still an amazing hobby to have a deliriously fun time pissing away the hours. Maybe some just need a bit of time with other things to realize it's not all that bad here. That or people enjoy just being miserable regardless.

I'm not disillusioned. There are more amazing games coming out now than ever before. The problem is that many get distracted by all the horseshit that also gets released nowadays too.

Imho it's just the churn doing it's thing. Engineering is difficult and used to be a hobby. You wouldn't ever do this shit if you didn't enjoy it but, once all the wall st. money piled in after the GFC you had a bunch of people move into the profession chasing the almighty dollar. And you can see it in the quality of software we've been getting over the past ten years or so and it's not going to change until the bubble pops and the money goes somewhere else.

And that was not case in PS2 era? People often forget in PS2 days there was plenty of great games but also plenty of absolute trash shovelware….type of shit now you find digital store front for $1.99 but in PS2 days they would get physical copy.

The difference is a matter of scale and information delivery.

So we agree then?
Yeah, back in the day era when we do get shit games people complain with friends at school but now in age of internet people now can cry about it all over the net.

Ultimately my point is in EVERY generation we get good games and we get shit games that's always been the case…..that doesn't mean gaming industry is "doomed".

Also people's expectations for games gone so twisted…..I often see it here, either the game needs to be "masterpiece" or it's straight up "trash" or the new word "slop"……there is no longer anything in between.

Sometimes read people's criticism, they can't enjoy the game just because "it's not blowing them away" and when read these then I start to understand why people can't enjoy games anymore, people like that always expecting every game that comes to be "masterpiece".

I don't mean to rag on anyone here - I'm just sharing my perspective:

I can't understand how people can be so cynical about gaming today. There are more ecosystems to play in than there were in the past. There's more of every genre of game than there was in the past. Even old stuff that fell out of fashion has returned as indie niche games. We have more options for how we play (screens, audio, controllers, online/offline, etc.) than we ever did before. If you can't afford to spend the money on new titles, all the digital stores are constantly putting games on sale. You can setup an account on a site like isthereanydeal and they'll email you when a game you want hits the price you're willing to pay. You don't even have to go out and buy the games anymore - you can do it all on your phone.

My only frustration with gaming these days is not having enough time to soak it all up. I have a job, wife, kids, and responsibilities. Sometimes, when I do have a couple of hours to play, I'm just tired enough that I'd rather go lay in bed and veg with YouTube. The guilt associated with my backlog is 100x more of an issue than being annoyed with a game not living up to its potential, or a publisher acting like a bag of dicks.

As a blue collar kid in the 90s, I felt like I had to knife fight hobos to get games. By comparison, I'm living in the lap of luxury now.

My biggest issue with gaming is really time management as I get older, and I don't have enough to play everything I want.

AAA has gotten worse, and gaming hardware prices have gone up...but I still have an ever growing backlog.

Caring less about graphics wow-ing me, and more about gameplay innovation I think helps in getting more out of the medium. Also, indulging in older games I missed out on is great too, because the old becomes a new experience too.

Doesnt bither me at all. So easy to ignore. If your game launches with anything other than at least very positive reviews on steam, i'm not buying it.

Pretty sure sony holds more patents than nintendo. If you aren't poking the bear like an idiotic palworld dev they likely wont even use them.

I'm cool with both old and new.

I do miss a lot of the older games and the gaming world back then cause it felt the creators had more passion compared to now.

There's still a decent amount of games I'm looking forward to so it isn't so bad for me.

Space Marine 3
Stellar Blade 2
GTA VI
Tides of Annihilation
Witcher 4
Half Life : Dark Matter
Black Mesa Blue Shift Remake
Operation Black Mesa
Half Life 3
Elder Scrolls VI
Fallout 5
FFVII Remake Part 3
World of Warcraft Midnight
World of Warcraft The Last Titan
Warcraft Reforge Chronicles of the Second War: Rise of the Alliance
Resident Evil 0 Remake
Resident Evil 1 Reremake
Resident Evil Code Veronica Remake
Skyblivion
Skywind

So yeah still got lots to look forward to.

Edit- definitely on shitty PC related pricing of course.

I just play the next game- have fun- complain here and there. Ultimately just have fun with new games
I'm 40

If I ever take gaming this seriously- I probably need to quit

Mainly, it is annoying when you are on a laptop and have to go somewhere and you want to update everything.

I sit in my little corner with Indies/AA, older AAA and emulation. Probably weird to say on a forum like this but I really don't give much of a shit about most of the gaming companies now( especially the bigger ones). I've long realized that the industry I grew up on in the 90s and 2000s simply doesn't exist anymore, and I've made peace with that and find joy in the hobby where I can find it. There's alot of good shit to play both past and present if you can look past current AAA trends.
