Rare: please fix the control in PDZ!

Just got the chance to play PDZ.. I love Halo and play almost all console-FPS that are released.

The levels I got to play were the rooftop, garage and some multiplayer level in 2 player split-screen.. I love the goldeneye-feeling in the weapons and the slow pacing of the game.

but...

I, seriously, adjusted the controls (3 options for sens?!) 15 minutes to try to get a playable setting.. no mather how I tried though.. the game was TOTALLY uncontrollable..
the controls were the worst I have ever tried in a console FPS.. and it was not the x360-pad (which felt great and other games, Kameo for example, were easy to control)

Autoaim was on and I seriosly had to stand still to be able to hit an enemy on easy and they stand STILL (I am about level 25 in Halo 2 team slayer so i CAN play console FPS)...

the multiplayer match was a joke as noone could hit the other player. We emtied our weapons 3 times each before getting just one kill. The autoaim WAS on, you could see it adjusting. But it didn´t "work", at ALL.. hard to explain..

Tt was seriously a REAL gamebreaker; if Rare don´t fix this, the game will barely be playable. At least not in any way you are used to play FPS games on console.

I pray and hope that Rare will fix this. We were many people at the event that all had this compaint.

It's not like this guy just got the spry idea to compare PDZ to Halo, it's the comparison every normal gamer is going to make when they see the 360. Once they find out that PDZ is supposedly the killer app FPS at "launch" they'll immediately make comparisons to Halo.

I felt like Halo's organic controls were 99% of the reason I liked it. I felt like Halo 2's slightly less organic controls killed it. If it's anything nearly as bad as this dude says, PDZ is going to be a complete bitch.

The plus side is that while it may take 3 clips to kill your friend, at least he'll fly thirty feet in the air once you do, as if all those bullets hit him at once.

The rollercoaster doesn't seem to be going up much lately.

It is definitely something that worries me (the controls that is). I'm very much looking forward to it, and very happy with what I've seen regardless of all the hate. However, on every video I've seen people seem to be really struggling to get a decent aim, always overcorrecting. I put it down to incompetence or lack of practice, I'm hoping it will 'feel' good to me...but it does make me nervous. Still, I'm sure it will be fine.

hey all im saying is i would rather PDZ control like goldeneye and timesplitters rather than than halo.
Except the aiming in Goldeneye and TS is really sharp and spoton...If this guy's impressions are accurate then there is no comparison... =\

I wish.. timesplitters or even goldeneyes controls are ULTRA-sharp compared to this..

have you guys seen the videos on xboxyde.com (by the always great Blim)?

you thought the players who played in the movies sucked?

well.. so did I, until I played the game myself.. the players who played in the movies are probably good Halo players.. watch the movies again and keep that in mind

the aim was more off than conker multiplayer even.. it was REAL bad ..

all my friends at the event had the same complaint. It felt like som sort of wierd acceleration (I have never felt it in a console-shooter) hard to pinpoint really.. tried changing all sorts of control options.. couldn´t get a setting that was even CLOSE to Timesplitters

uh fan of what exactly? Sony? Nintendo? In that case I wouldn´t have bothered going to an X360 event..

No, I have all consoles.. have no preference.. I will buy all 3 next gen also

You know, in every video I see, people are controlling fine. I don't see people struggling (except for that one video where the guy in the garage didn't seem to understand the difference in axes) to move Joanna.

watch again and compare to, say timesplitters..

..or the PDZ-version at the event was totally screwed (it seemed like the same beta from all the movies, the cutscene on the rooftops had the same graphical bugs)

If there ARE control problems, I don't think Rare is going to be tweaking them any further. I think the fact that there are three sensitivity options is essentially saying, "If you don't like the way the game controls, there are plenty of settings for you to mess with - so shut up."

I still have faith, though.

Control is a fundamental part of a game, especially a twitch game like this. I don't think they'd get away with sending a totally uncontrollable out to the masses

It sounds like there is too much presicion...By watching the video, the sensitivity needs to be turned down to you avoid the need to "tap" your thumbsticks.

I hope that makes sense...

Weird...I never noticed the controls being bad...I mean, had they been bad I would've remembered it.

they should just release a damn keyboard/mouse combo accessory already. xbox is full of FPS, no doubt X360 will be full of them as well. enough with this gamepad bullshit :P

As a general rule, I hate FPS games on consoles because of the lack of keyboard/mouse. GoldenEye/Perfect Dark was an exception. I am being forced to make that exception again.

So PDZ gets hate from Sonyfans and Halofans. Interesting dichotomy.

Prediction: PDZero will be a mess in gameplay and balance. PDZero 2 will be an awesome game.

some of the people here..

I am NOT trying to bash the game just for fun.. the game just WAS HARD TO CONTROL in my opinion.. If you actually TRIED the game, then bother to argue with me... else.. wait til you try it yourself?

and you people that don´t believe me:

check out this video.. this was how it felt.. look at the first shootout..

tell me that this does not look hard to control?

Yeah I've always said there is a very weird inertia in the controls of PDZ, like you stop using the right stick to aim and you are still moving for a few frames, or something like that.
I've found that playing with a sensitivity at around 40 made the game a bit more playable for me, but still it was far from perfect.
I think the autoaiming was disabled in this build though, even if you selected it in the options. It certainly didn't feel like the game was trying to help me one bit with this enabled at least.
This game is so strange, on one side some graphics, effects and lighting can be most excellent and make the game almost like CG, and then you have these ugly characters that spoil everything. Then you have some nice ideas like the cover system, and it's spoiled by the bad controls (though it certainly can be fixed). And of course there is the AI, but I just can't believe the game could ship with this AI, it's just not possible.

ugh, I had that kind of awful drifting going on with the N64 controller that got worn down, is it possible that some of these problems are caused by butchered demo controllers? or could the 360 controllers be less durable?

Yeah. Shooting a moving target with a pistol from 300 ft away does look difficult in that video...as it should. And when they got closer it still looked difficult as the the auto-aim was not locking on.

Considering I've played the game on at least 5 different systems, I *seriously* doubt it was hardware problem ;)

Everyone keeps saying "THIS IS NOT HALO!!!!!", and that's fine...but anyone creating a console FPS should take a long, hard look at how Bungie handled the controls and proceed to duplicate. Halo and its sequel feature the absolute best controls you'll find in a console FPS. You need not duplicate Halo, but borrowing some of its fantastic ideas is something I appreciate very much...

That's a good summary of the various shit I've heard from people who've actually played the game, unlike the whiners trying to defend it for the sake of having already purchased it and just lying in wait for its arrival (I never understood why anyone would just hand over their workable capital months in advance for an item that won't be hard to find when it releases).

Anyone feeling that this game has slipped from "Decemberish" to "till it's done"? Sounds like these problems have the potential to turn into a never-ending cocktease of monthly delays until it's suddenly the second coming killer app of June 06, the end of the winter drought.

Seriously, I found nothing egregiously wrong with PDZ's controls. Maybe the zoomed in sniper view felt a bit touchy at first, but you get used to it.

I wonder what the problem is here?
