Rare talks about the Revolution controller

Given Rare's history of being a former Nintendo first-party developer, we asked Botwood if he thought Perfect Dark Zero would work as a title for Nintendo's upcoming Revolution console. His response: "We could make it work, but there'd be some changes to the gameplay, I expect; the controller looks like it might lend itself towards a light gun style of shooting, which would be a fresh approach. Personally, I'd like to try using the controller for an hour or more, the length of play session I had when I played Wind Waker, for example...it doesn't look that comfortable to me at first glance. Most people don't use TV remote controls constantly for a whole hour, let alone wave them in the air all that time. I'm skeptical, but that's tempered by my respect for Nintendo and my past experience of working with their controllers."

On a funny note:
To Rare's credit, the game has (along with the screen shots released for it -- see below) come a long way since then, with most people who played the game at the recent X05 press event coming away with positive reactions. When playing the game at that event, we even noticed a subtle reference to the message board phenomenon -- a bot in one of the multiplayer games had the name "Wallguy." At the time, we weren't sure if this was just a little in-joke for the press or something for the final release, but Botwood confirms this will be included in the final game. "The bots have randomly generated names," he explains. "There's a big list of past Rare characters in there, and we also indulged ourselves with a few Easter Eggs there. Wallguy being one of them."

"Rare talks about the Revolution controller"

*man at Rare looks at MS shackle and cries salty fanboy tears onto them, hoping they will rust the metal cuffs and free him*

etc.

Brings up a valid point.

And its Duncun Botwoods opinion, not Rare :)

The waving around is as much a problem as DDR, Donkey Konga, or any other interactive game. With a litle time gamers will build muscles some place other than their forearms and it won't be an issue any more.

It's not like you're moving your arms around. From what people have said who've used it, the movement of your hand is slight w/ many of the demos.

Nintendo is forcing evolution! THIS IS NOT GOD'S WORK!!

I don't care what they think about the Rev controller, but I think it's a riot that there is a "Wallguy" bot in the game.
If he doesn't constantly wall lean, I'll be severely disappointed.

Ditto. This is the real NEWS of the thread, IMO. I can't wait to bust some caps in Wallguy.

I'm suprised they didn't ask if any Rare games would be downloadable on Revolution.

If they do it'd likely be only the games they made with Nintendo mascots in them since if they do plan to put mass games onto a downloadable service I'd think they'd feel pressure to toss them onto Microsofts own Xbox Live Arcade service over Nintendo's rev system.

The real news of this thread is that Rare was once a first party developer. :P

id say a keyboard and mouse as controllers is pretty fucking un-natural but that worked out pretty well for the pc gaming community.

time will tell though. i still dont see it doing huge numbers but its nintendo, it'll be successful.

You could in the original, so why not?

Well, you couldn't in Halo 2.

Different Devo and all that, I know. The point is that Halo 2 not including bots basically means it should never be a feature taken for granted.

Very nice, civil comments. The guy sounded like he was just saying what he honestly thought about it, and not being a complete tool to the company that owns him.

And Wallguy being a randomly generated bot name is not bigger news. Now, if Wallguy were a bot TYPE (ala Vendettabot or something) and had his own AI (to always lean against walls), then that'd be real news.

That's a fucking classic. :lol

It would be even funnier if this Wallguy bot is never rendered with any kind of lighting and is a flat textured low poly model while other bots are all bling bling and stuff. :lol

I probably would have known that if the only amount of time I've ever spent with Halo 2 hadn't been the single player mode for about 5 minutes at my E3 hotel room.

It is lightgun style
From what I understand (from hands-on impressions) it is not lightgun style. It's like freed control stick style, you know? It's angular based, like a control stick is, not displacement based, like a lightgun is.
