RE4 Demo Disc for U.S.?

Is the demo disc different from the DVD bonus listed here:

?

I believe so. GameStop have their own promotion being the RE4 Limited Edition Tin that contains the RE Apocalypse OST, Artwork, booklet etc while EBgames offer is the 'Making Of' DVD which will probably be similiar to the one that's currently sold out in Japan. Speaking of which, if anybody ordered their Japanese copy of RE4 from Play Asia in hopes of getting the DVD, you may want to check your order since as stated Capcom have met their stock limit/sold out of the 'Making Of' DVDs and are now offering a leather pen wallet in it's place.

Here are some snaps of the US preview disc:

This game is !##$#%% HARD if you run out of ammo. Why 10 bullets? Isn't Leon's gun a .45 and don't they hold 16 bullets?

Oh well. Other than that the animation, graphics, and artstyle is awesome.

One more problem:I hope Capcom fixes the audio problem with the villagers. They sound like robots.

Look at my tag thats a box of my personal bullets from my .45 It's a glock and it holds ten in a clip this is accurate.

I went in...Asked about it...They gave it to me for free. Awesome!

And I just played through the demo for the first time...Oh my God! I can't wait to see what else Capcom has added in, that ever media outlet has been hinting at, but forbidden from speaking of. Game of the 2000 Freaking 5.

Is the demo free everywhere? It seems a few people are getting it for free just by asking. If that's the case, perhaps I'll stop by and pick it up at EBgames

So this is the same one that was released in Japan? So that means I can unlock the Submachine gun! How do you do that? Get enough pesos right?

Unfortunatly not. This demo is a slightly new build and neither the Famitsu or E3 demo. The HUD is different for a start as well as some new items and tweaks added. Some content has also been removed like the portrait of the Chainsaw Guy for example.

Some more grabs:
Again, thanks to Dot50Cal from THIA

A Key Item that wasn't in the Famitsu demo.

This is what the Chainsaw guy drops:

Some other changes include the removal of the sound FX when collecting pesetas as well as the spinning item icon whenever you collected an item from a fallen enemy.

Haha the resident evil game library looks exactly like cube kiosk interface :lol

I hope it isn't the same shitty music playing, I am so tired of that stuff :(

i got my demo disc today.

game is awesome. you get to play up until the church bell rings.

Awesome. Wonder if I have to pay in full to get this?
Nope, just the minimum of $5.00.

I was hesitant at first because I rarely pre-order games since I have a Fry's within 10 minutes of where I live. But I'll just bring in the flyer and get them to price match. :D

I'm intrigued by the story. I want to know what the f*(& is going on in the town. Some of the descriptions are funny in their understatement as well. "They seemed to have killed a lot of people. I hope she's okay!".

The graphics are uneven in this build, but I like that it's longer. The combat and movement are so bad for an action title that we were alternately laughing and cursing at the screen so it never gets scary.

So the tank controls do or do not work better with this new perspective? Or do you mean with the tank controls it makes everything on screen look strange?

I have that disc as well, but the RE4 demo won't load for me. I just end up with a black screen for some reason... :\

The videos and menu work just fine, but the actual demo does not. I can't even begin to imagine why. It's not as if I've had any other GC related issues before...

My Cube doesn't even seem to freeze. The wavebird indicator light stills functions and I can press "start + b + x" from the black screen to return to the main menu. The game just goes nowhere...

happens to me too, sort of, after i wait a while and tap buttons it starts up
probably just loading with no loading screen

Weird. I'd try to trade it back for a different copy. My copy works perfectly.

I figured it out...

The game is clearly asking whether I want to run in progressive scan or not (which I obviously do). When I pressed A, my TV switched to 480p mode and the game loaded. It seems that the prog-scan option simply does not display, for some reason...

Well, that demo was pretty damn cool.

I'm not a huge fan of the controls/camera, but they are a massive improvement over the previous games. The combat feels a whole lot better than it did in any other RE game to date. I also like the kick feature when enemies get too close.

For some reason, moving around that town area reminded me a whole lot of Siren. Actually, the whole game kinda feels like Siren thus far (minus the sight jacking). Of course, this is nowhere near as difficult as Siren was (thankfully).

The new engine seems pretty kickass, though. The individual maps are pretty large, load very quickly, and all houses and structures seem to allow for immediate access (that is, no load points). It looks very nice, but I was disappointed to see that it only renders in 16-bit color. It certainly isn't as grainy as, say, Prince of Persia WW (which was a mess), but smoke clouds and dark areas are a bit grainy. I suppose, in this case, it works with the atmosphere. I don't think the PS2 will have too much trouble handling this game, though.

They work very poorly for how action intensive it gets. I mean...it's great that the action is set up the way it is, it's exciting in a different manner than the other RE's I've tried, but the controls are poorly suited to handle it. I'm not sure why a designer of a game would hamstring the player that way. I know that you actually play and enjoy such games, so you'll see what I mean when you play it, Mrbob. Suffice to say that the limitations are ...just that, rather than heightening any sense of fear. I'm not scared that I can't target my enemy...I'm just wondering why the handpicked agent of the President moves like an RPG character. It's archaic and badly done.

I do agree with this. Like I said, it feels better than previous RE games, but that doesn't mean it's really good. It still controls worse than other games from the same genre, and considering how fast the action can get, that's not a good thing. The enemies really do come on pretty strong. The controls are simply not quick enough.

I've been wondering about that aswell, 16bit color shouldn't be used now. I don't think they would have framerate issue's if they were to move up to 24bit color. Articles I've read suggest that 24bit color wouldn't affect polygon numbers, especially if texture compression is used. Metroid Prime2 use 24bit textures from I can tell and its running 60fps.

I think it depends on the player because, I watched one of the 1up vids and the player sucked, the player was shooting the villagers one time with shotgun and moving on.

The IGN vids the player seems to play more tactical, instead of running into the area with all the catwalks, he switched to the sniper rifle and started picking them off one by one.

Because of the controls, your forced to look for a advantage, like climbing up ladders to the roof of cabins. Giving yourself a height advantage.

Well, the shotgun is powerful enough to do that. If you let a crowd gather, one blast should take most of them out.

Having a 24-bit front buffer takes up more memory. It also consumes more bandwidth but I doubt that's such a big issue.

See though, that's the thing. Lots of games find more clever ways to make players think, even tactically when approaching battles. It could be by your weaponry, the aggresiveness of your enemy, the environment, etc. RE does those things, but then saddles you with the additional debt of poor controls. That doesn't make any design sense. It's a flaw that aggravates the game experience. Usually, it's explained away by wanting to make a cinematic flow, etc. but anyone who's played the demo understands that it doesn't apply here as much. He's basically using the angles and movement that add tension to a hallway fight in larger rooms and outdoor environments. It comes off very differently.

I'm not saying it won't be a good game, but it's clear it could be better.

Oh shit! I called EB last night to see if I could get a hold of one of these:

Me: Do you have any of those Resident Evil 4 demo discs for pre-orders?

Dude: Uh I dunno let me check.
(to manager) Do we have any Resident....Evil.....demo..discs?
(long pause) Resident Evil...uh 4
(to me) Yep we have one left.

So I go to EB today and ask about the demo disc. There's 2 employees standing there scratching their nuts and a manager on the phone. The two look at me like I'm insane and finally one asks the manager. The manager gets off the phone and in his best soulless hate-my-job voice he tells me that they are available for a minimum deposit of $5, so I say cool. I give him my name, phone # and all that shit and I walk out with a disc (mind you that there was a STACK of discs, not ONE DISC like they fucking claimed on the phone). I'm walking I'm walking I look at the disc waitagoddamn minute! I go back to EB and tell them that the demo disc I inquired about turned out to be a soundtrack CD. Blank stare. So I tell them I want my $5 back, they don't apologize or anything and I have to fill out a fucking slip to get my money back.

Now I didn't raise a stink and I actually apologized TO THEM for the hassle, but for fucks sake do these people not know the difference between a soundtrack and a demo disc?

Someday when I am Emporor I will line up all EB employees and execute them in random order.*

* Do not take this part seriously.

What? You got a soundtrack disc? For what game? Surely not Resident Evil 4 (there is no soundtrack yet, AFAIK).

I think it's a Canada only promotion, and no I didn't keep it because I figured it wasn't worth my $5. I'll pre-order elsewhere if necessary. Not sure what music is on it.

I'd only consider keyboard and mouse support "better".

I understand why they've decided to go with this control scheme. It captures the spirit(and limitations) of both the classic RE and Gun Survivor games. They've struck a nice balance between appeasing fans of the franchise and opening it up to those who may have been alienated. For introducing context sensitive actions and bumping up responsiveness, I think they deserve some credit. The demo plays fluidly after about an hour-or-so learning curve.

But then... I like Metroid Prime.

Oh no, there are many other optimal analog stick aiming systems available.

I was hoping for a Splinter Cell approach, where you manipulate the actual screen and position a cross-hair over your enemy. RE4 is like that secondary aiming mode found in TimeSplitters 2 or Goldeneye (where you move the cross-hair itself rather than the entire viewing area).

They could also allow movement while in firing mode in addition to allowing free camera movement while in exploration mode (via the C-stick). Strafing would have halped a great deal. I don't mean FPS-style "run strafing" or anything, I mean a slow walk which allows you to move around realistically while holding a weapon.

Actually, judging by the screenshots, that demo is the one from the E3. The menu interface is the oldest known....

I know it's hopeless at this point, but I want them to get rid of that HUD. One of the best things about Resident Evil, and any game that doesn't display your ammo, is that you have to keep track of how many shots you fired in your head. It adds a lot of tension. I don't mind the health meter too much, but would prefer to see damage on the character... something more sophisticated than the walk/hold side/shamble damage system.

Surprisingly, I don't have a problem with the controls. They're spot on, but the camera can get annoying. I think Capcom was trying to mimic a person's view in real life which is why people are having problems with the camera.

I think the controls are just fine. The new aiming system is great, but I could be better at it. :lol The camera definetly takes some getting used to though. I remember reading on IGN that you could switch to First Person, but this is IGN, so I wouldn't expect much. :lol

OK Itagaki. And I love the new camera as well. I believe Game Informer reported a first-person aiming option too. But I beleive that they mean being able to aim in first-person, ala MGS. This may have been scrapped.

Yeah, now that I think about it, the FPS system has been mentioned elsewhere. I guess they thought the current perspective was working much better than the FPS perspective, and decided to get rid of it. Oh, and are you calling me Itigaki because you don't like the controls?

The demo is really growing on me...

I decided to give it another run, and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. I really do think the final game will kick ass!

No, just calling you Itagaki as a joke. In an interview, he said that he loved Pikmin 2, but he could have made Pikmin 2 better. :lol
