The other got closed due to (nearly) reaching the 20k post count mark, which traditionally gets threads closed (funny pic thread, etc) where an OT2 is born in its place.

Nah, they just close threads around 20,000 posts to avoid database issues. There's no automatic system to do it so moderators do it manually, and I'm guessing it was locked early since the last page of the thread was mostly people talking about how OT2 was about to be required.
