That's fucking terrible.

Never got that bad for me. Though I was nearly jumped one time and I managed to talk my way out of it.

When I was in boarding school, there was this one racist that used to harass me all the time for being brown.

You know, used to call me "little paki" and other stupid shit just to raise my ire.

It was a really dumb thing to do, because I was on the football team. Unbeknownst to me, when the team found out, two of the starting linemen dragged him out of his bed in the middle of the night and beat him senseless with hockey sticks.

(the two lineman got suspended for a week, and the guy who was harassing me was kicked out of school...that was kind of weird)

Maybe not the best thing for them to have done, but it was a sweet gesture...I think.

If I have two duties in my job and do both of them well, is it legal for the company to force me to drop one and do the other full time without my consent? Even if I'm the senior member of the team they'd be breaking up?

An aside but I love how Asians self-identify as "brown people". I thought it was just two of my mates until recently.

Also for the Indians, is it common for people from Mumbai to say "isn't it" in conversation? A friend of mine always uses it the way Canadians use "ay", and I met another guy from Mumbai who did it too but I forgot to ask him about it.

Why wouldn't it be?

I love it, too. I find that us brown people are very proud of being brown, and wear it as a badge of honor. That's the best part.

Unfortunately I think it's at their discretion where you go. If for some reason you were forced out of one duty and into another that paid less, well, then you might have a case. Or, if it were the result of a superior trying to dick you over. Either of these?

Because they'd owe me a lot more money. There's no way for me to object without forfeiting both jobs?

How is it legally defined? As two jobs that you are undertaking, or two duties within a given job description?

Anyone else prefer listening to remixes over everything else?

Something about making old material new again makes me really happy, especially when they mix in unusual instruments and sounds.

One reason I love going to concerts instead of just listening to CDs (assuming they're not going to play the song CD perfect) is being able to listen to them play around with a familiar song.

It has to do with the scenario I posted earlier in the thread, where I do one job 75% of the time and the other job 25% of the time. The supervisor is trying to move my team away from me and move a new team in, effectively making that 25% of my job my full job. The 75% job is my area of expertise, but I'd rather not be doing either full-time anymore. I like where I am now, and it's been absolutely effective so far.

I really enjoy remixes as well. The Verve Remixed collection are some of my all time favorites discs. Something about that old jazz and blues redone with modern sounds just makes me so happy.

Oh yeah and your movement has sucked me in. RP January it is.

ugh been travelling all day, still got a bus to take tomorrow to get back to college. on the bright side i got some time during flights to play Half Minute Hero. So how's it been going RP gaf? What topic are we on now?

You mentioned there was a money difference. If your 25% duty suddenly became your 100% duty would you still make the same amount as when you were doing the 25% and 75% jobs together? If not you may have some grounds, but often in the initial contract they make sure to grant themselves the right of change dependent on what the company needs.

Like, if I've been editing 75% of the time and QAing 25% of the time, but they needed me to QA 100% here I think I could protest to my boss, but ultimately I'd have no legal ground to challenge the switch as long as they didn't drop my salary a peg. :(

Just got back from Gali's Gyro and Grill. They make a damn good Gyro, and if anyone here visits Pittsburgh then you need to go to this place.

My salary would stay the same, but it shouldn't because I should be paid more for the 25% job.

Okay, I've officially hit my limit: I can no longer stay up. Gotta be on 30+ hours without sleep now. I thought I could make it until at least 10pm, but two hours shy will have to do, I guess. :(

Ah. Seems like you might have recourse to at least request a raise given the nature of the work in the 25% duty, but that won't solve your preference for the 75% one. You're in a bit of a bind, I'm afraid. But check your contract and with Lawyer Gaf first, though. I saw that they have an advice thread that might give you more ammunition when talking to your boss about this. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Nah, I'm just furious right now so I needed someone to remind me not to take a flamethrower to the place. Thanks!

Nice stuff! Covers are also excellent.

Lately I've been into electronic classical remixes. Anyone have anything like that they could recommend? (what do you mean no!?)

Electronic classical music. I've not really heard anything like that, but I'm not sure why would want to listen to that over an orchestra. Not that I listen to classical music much anyway.

Ahh, I'm back. I've got my instant oatmeal and mild cheddar and soft tortillas, so I'm set for the night next threee months*.

I totally found a perfectly sized carry bag for my jumping stilts. This weekend is going to be awesome! Shout out to folks in the Boston area for planning to put up with my presence for four days. :D

Anyway, folks, got any interesting plans for the weekend?

* BJ's wholesale club. Very effective in helping the budget stay low! Will have to turn on the gas heat switch in a few hours, though, more's the pity.

Hopefully by then I'll be finished painting the new house, have my computer back up and running, and I'll have a job guaranteed. I have my cousin's post graduate graduation dinner on saturday. That should be fun.

Indian Food Question for all the Brown peeps in the thread:

How many of you eat Thayir Sadam/Dahi Sadam?

It's seriously my soul food. My Sri Lankan brother in law is the only person I know more addicted to thayir sadam than I am.

For those that don't know, thayir sadam is steamed rice mixed with curd/yogurt. In the west, it's easiest to mix with a mixture of plain yogurt and buttermilk.

I have no idea how legit this stuff is but I used to eat this in college:

Not that I'm Indian. I love making Palak Paneer and anything curry based. There's an awesome place near my apartment called
samosa-house-and-bharat-bazaar-culver-city
for Indian cooking supplies.

I have to say, thanks to Indian food I now actually like eating lentils.

This doesn't really fit the bill, but I always love having an excuse to introduce people to E.S. Posthumus, so here is their hauntingly awesome take on the classical hit "Moonlight Sonata."

Okay, NOW I sleep. I don't even think my brain is on go go mode right now. noooo

Wow. I LOVE this! And I say that very rarely.

Electronic classical music. I've not really heard anything like that, but I'm not sure why would want to listen to that over an orchestra. Not that I listen to classical music much anyway.

Well, it's not so much about one being better than another. I love going to see live orchestra music as well. It's more about mixing things into making something unusual. A lot of the music I like best are the ones that take two sounds that you wouldn't think would work together and makes them work. So when I say "electronic classical music", it's not just classical done with electronic instruments (in fact it's preferable if the sounds they use aren't trying to imitate the instruments themselves), but redone with everything that makes the electronic music genre its own.

Not in the winter time in Canada. I guess screaming at the Leafs does pretty well too.

You know last winter was the coldest winter I've ever experienced in the UK. We had a prolonged cold spell that lasted the whole of December. In the early morning we go temperatures on some days that reached -15 to -17°C. Never known it to be that cold before.

A bit of snow is nice, but when it doesn't go anywhere for a whole month it starts to really do your head in. I don't know how you put up with it.

This years it has been completely different. It has been really mild. It has rarely gone below 10°C.

It's been mild here too this winter. I foresee that changing, but we've only had one or two days of -25 wind chill weather so far. Usually it's most of January.

Apropos nothing, I finally saw someone going into the brothel down the street from me yesterday. It's this dingy little terrace nestled between two shops with a really innocuous sign on the door, but everyone knows it's a brothel. I've lived here for 3 1/2 years and I've never seen anyone actually go there, but yesterday I spotted a guy negotiating with someone at the door as I was going past in a cab. It was surprisingly exciting.

Nope as in I don't mind.

Also, my son is currently having the freak out of the century because I told him he couldn't watch 'My Little Pony'. The worst freaking out he's done in quite a while, hiccups and everything.

The real reason he is probably doing it is so he can get his own way. I used to do that as a kid. I thought if I freak out for long enough, my mother would give in just to get some peace

I suppose if the sounds are interesting, it could be quite a unique take on certain classical pieces.

According to our gas bill its a full 10 degrees warmer on average this January.
