Real Pic January!

Ever since I started playing guitar as a teenager, my top 3 guitar players has pretty much been Clapton, SRV and Hendrix. Sadly I don't even listen to them that much anymore or even play my electric guitar much these days. I need to get back in a band.

You know what band I'm really into right now? Early Genesis.

After tremendously enjoying a lot of Peter Gabriel's solo stuff, I decided to check out his time with the band.

Holy shit, Phil Collins is a sick drummer (I heard he was good but shit), Steve Hackett is a damn good guitarist too, and Tony Banks is killing those keyboards. Foxtrot and Selling England by the Pound are some of the best prog ever made.

Check out the solos on Firth of Filth: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SD5engyVXe0

Okay so who's your favorite guitarist, suspicious combination of nouns?

Me.

Srsly though, I don't know. I don't think I really have a favourite guitarist. Zack Gontard gets points for the sheer number of amazing bands he's in, but aside from that...*shrug*

Maybe Bob Quine? His guitar really made the Voidoids awesome.

Thing is, while the vast majority of my music is guitar based, it's not guitar based, if you see what I mean.

I'd be interested in hearing some of your stuff if you have any you can post.

Apparently, Jeff Beck is good that it doesn't even matter if his guitar is out of tune. He knows just how much to bend the notes he chooses to keep them in tune with the rest of the band.

I really need to improve my whammy bar skills. I played a Les Paul for awhile, so I wasn't using a whammy bar at all. The stuff that people like Jeff Beck and Steve Vai (IMO, the whammy king) can do is ridiculous.

Forgot Randy Rhodes and Tony Iommi earlier. Those guys would both be in my top 10 as well.

Persona series for goddamn sure. I would not play those games in front of friends.

So real pic thread (especially the new people who haven't said anything yet), what's your darkest gaming guilty pleasure?

You know, games that you enjoy, but you're really kind of ashamed to? I have a couple:

- Dead or Alive. I enjoy it as an actual fighting game. Across DOA4 and Dimensions, I've put like 100 hours in to the game. My ex-girlfriend and I still play DOA4 a few times a week on Live!

- Final Fantasy XIII. My expectations for the game were so rock-bottom that as long as it ran, I would have been fine with it. But I ended up really liking the graphics and music and even the battle system.

Nothing wrong with XIII to be embarassed about, same with Persona (the music should take care of that)...but I guess I can see some of the social link stuff getting some looks.

I guess i'll go with Kirby and Pokemon. Kirby has some pretty crazy/dark end bosses and scenarios for a game thats got a pink fluffy alien for the main character, gets pretty challenging near the end, is just plain fun, and has really catchy soundtracks too.

Pokemon for how fun competitive battling can be and of course the catchy soundtracks help that series as well.

DoA is my favorite 3D fighter. SoulCalibur bringing up a close second.

I figured I would post in here, since I think it's cool and would will join in.

If we're posting our stuff, I have a Myspace page that I throw things up on occasionally. I just finally put a new one up this month.. I hardly ever find the motivation to actually write and record whole songs, so the few tracks on there are from the last several years. It's pretty amateur but it's still fun when I can actually put something together.

I've never seen anyone actually look cel shaded in real life. Interesting picture

Edit: Damn you lol

I posted before I uploaded. :P

Please do! The more the better.

I am actually unreasonably excited for DOA5. I hope it makes it out by the summer.

I want it by summer, but since it seems so early I'm cool with TN taking their time. I can't wait to see everybody in the new art style.

I wish I was good at fighters. I'm a failure to my heritage.

I had some weird epiphany playing SSFIV that suddenly made me understand what the foundational basis is to get better. I can't even explain it, but suddenly I went from constantly jumping and using strong kick to staying on the ground, controlling movement, and playing mind-games.

When I was a kid, the idea of double quarter circles was basically impossible to me. I was like "Doesn't matter, I'll never be able to do this!" Now I pull it off like it's nothing.

Since I started playing Marvel 3 last year, even though I had a modicum of experience with fighting games, especially SSFII back in the day, I feel like I have just finally started to learn how these things really work. It's been a huge learning curve, but after 300+ hours I've gained an incredible amount of experience and understanding. Of course, I'm still a scrub :P

If that's you singing, you have a pretty good voice.

Edit: really solid guitar playing as well. I liked your solo on Thank You.

I used to be pretty good at learning some fighters(Street fighter Alpha, Killer Instinct, a few others). Now I just button mash until cool stuff happens. Only way I can enjoy Marvel Vs now. I was even pretty good at Tekken and Soul Calibur for a bit. Don't really have it in me to learn fighting games anymore.

I just try to zone people. Though SWORD OF BLACK KNIGHT works great for some mind games. Ok dude, bionic arm me from half way across the screen, oh wait.

Decent at MvC3, meh at SF4 (my timing sucks, one frame links? LOL).

Yeah, I'm definitely scrub league, but I know I'm improving, which I definitely wasn't before.

A friend and I have been playing UMvC3 a lot and we're basically the same skill except he's slightly better. It's been motivating me to play better to get a better W/L ratio.

I'd like to play people locally but that doesn't happen : / This is way you see in threads about certain fighter's netcode. Praying on that netcode patch for KOF 13

I was a lethal Soul Calibur player, but that's the only fighting game I've ever developed real skill at.

Slower paced games like Soul Calibur, Virtua Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter (main series), King of Fighters, and Tekken are better games to actually try to improve in. MvC 2 or 3 on the other hand...hard mountain to climb.

Especially since once you get locked in a combo, you cant do anything unless the other player screws up.

Thanks. Yeah, it's all me. I've been doing the guitar stuff a lot longer than anything else so those parts usually come more naturally.

Marvel is totally nuts in terms of the number of things that can happen simultaneously, but my love for Marvel and Capcom characters plus the inventiveness of the fighting system is what's given me the motivation to stick with it long enough to adapt to the frenetic pace and demanding matchup requirements.

What did I just walk into?

Dear Lord, I've never been so bored and uninspired... this evening is moving soooo slowly, and it's not even 8pm! What's worse is that the class I teach tomorrow isn't until 3:15p so I have no idea what to do with myself tomorrow.

Think of stupid reasons to fail all of your students. Then at the end of the semester say "Just kidding!" and have a pizza party.

This is your brain on Billychu.
