ok im for real done. DONE. Nicki killed ALL of them and im not even a nikki fan
I've never been sure what was supposed to be great about Nicki's verse, though I do love the part where she says thing big/get cash/blink fast and what not.
Kanye easily has the best verse imo.

Real talk OP?

And recent Kanye, not even close.

this is a thread for greatest rapper

also, ghostwriters
Yah like I said I don't believe he's top 50 and as I said a few pages ago you never even know which stuff was written by him.
I'm not saying Kanye's lyrics as in he wrote them, just as in what's on the tracks.
I feel like people are selling his verses short.

Probably one of the best music artist of all time.

All of his solo albums are good, had good reviews from professional critics and music fans and sold well. Only a few other artists or band can say the same. I can't name one but there's probably a few.He has never taken the easy way, every record was bringing something new to the game. The Life of Pablo, and especially Yeezys are some of the most forward thinking rap albums of the past few years

Maybe some rappers have better lyrics, flow or beats but as a whole as rap or hip hop artist, he's the best, yes.

Name one genius that ain't crazy.

krs one is a cornball/ corny af.

That is weak opinion. KRS ONE is ill, and has stayed true to the game. Which can't be said about many of the current crop in the mainstream... Kanye is a good example...In some ways I can understand his existential angst: dude on the one hand wants to be taken seriously as an artist and as a rebellious persona, but on the other has been thoroughly seduced by the fame and wealth, and is little more than a bankable brand. He doesn't show much integrity through his words or his conduct. He's been eaten by his own ego.

Been avoiding this thread for some time because the title actually hurts to read

I will say this, 808s gre on me the most over the years

KRS-One has one of the biggest egos in Hip Hop History though.

Interesting. I think this is what you really need to define Kanye's contribution to the music he creates. Rap producers like Kanye do far more than what traditional music producers do.

Kanye is a musician, composer, arranger, rapper, singer and producer.

I don't think he's the greatest of the past decade as a musician.

You know who does that and more? Grimes. But I see no call or line-up to produce oral sex for Grimes.

HAHAHA! No. It's the rapper who made this list Reggie, Jay-Z, 2Pac and Biggie
Andre from OutKast, Jada, Kurupt, Nas, and then me (Eminem)

Lupe fiasco, AZ, black thought, common, doom.

Should I continue?

Edit: ice cube wasn't even on that list. But I'm the young one apparently

Lupe Fiasco, AZ, Black thought, and DOOM over Krayzie Bone and Redman? Are you serious? Common is a straight beast, but I can't put him my top ten. You'll just have to deal with that.

Krayzie would eat those guys for breakfast lol

You're the type of guy that would make something like this:

It sounds like it was written by a 5 year old for a start.

You are not supposed to read it, its not a poem, its notes in a song.

Some rappers write beautiful poetry. Thats not really what Kanye does so if you judge him by that standard yeah he sucks.

can you tell me whats wrong with these lines? people keep bringing them up but I wonder if they could explain

Rhyming "Asshole with Asshole" is a very Kanye West thing to do. However, it's also very pedestrian and also "weak" in terms of lyrical prowess. It would be fine if it was an off top freestyle but if wrote that shit? Nah fam, weak sauce.

I've been avoiding this thread because Kanye stans are the WOAT hip hop fan community.

Now that I've let poor judgment get the better of me, I find myself pleasantly surprised that most of the responses seem to be the appropriate, "LOL, no."

That you even need to ask speaks volumes.

What an embarrassing defense.

Also what note is 'asshole' because I can't find the corresponding string/fret combination on a guitar.

They are *lyrics* in a song, not notes. Lyrics are meant to convey something, and in this case they convey how much of twat and shit lyriscist Kanye is perfectly.

No. Kanye West is the Spinal Tap of Hip Hop, but real.

He has a very good ear and eye for emerging trends and hires the best producers and designers who create amazing stuff, he is far from the best rapper but he puts it into a better package and sells to a mass market that would normally shit all over what he gets inspiration from.

um its D4. You can't find the notes of the guy that heavily uses autotune?

Now if I fuck this model
And she just bleached her asshole
And I get bleach on my T-shirt
I'ma feel like an asshole

theres a reason its the first lyrics you hear after what is described as a gospel song. its supposed to be jarring. its supposed to make you think about him a certain way. I mean do you think he's just doing this randomly? do you think the rest of the song is also weak?

I was high when I met her
We was down in Tribeca
She get under your skin if you let her
She get under your skin if you-uh
I don't even wanna talk about it
I don't even wanna talk about it

and its very clear that hes using two definitions of asshole so I'm not sure why he should be rhyming with a different word

Yea but Ross still washed him on devils in a new dress sooo
No he didn't, two rappers can both have amazing verses and they're both integral to the track.
I hate this so and so washed someone crap, Kanye on Devils is one of the best verses I've ever heard (same for Ross).

So much anger over one verse in an artists career, lyrics are supposed to be lyrics, doesn't matter what they talk about.
I hate those lyrics (and the majority of the Pablo lyrics) too, but they're no indictment on any lines except the lines they are.
And what does singing about "bleached assholes"make you a twat?

No. And I blame Jay for saying his influence and fame should make him one of the best rappers because fame and influence are highly subjective and shouldn't be relevant to how great of an artist you were. Jay and Kayne both are probably way more famous than they have any right to be if we are going by how strong their musical outputs have been recently so the "I'm great because I'm famous" argument is nonsense. If we are being honest, Kayne is nowhere near the top 10, not even sure if he's in the top 20. Definitely a top 5 producer tho.

I've never been sure what was supposed to be great about Nicki's verse, though I do love the part where she says thing big/get cash/blink fast and what not.

They all had amazing verses but I'd have to give it to Nicki with Kanye's verse in a close second. Kanye's verse is definitely more catchy and the wordplay is great. But the reason I edge it out for Nicki is because the way she shifts her tone/character throughout her verse in such a fluid way without it somehow breaking into a mess is just marvelous.

To me at least, declaring Kanye as the best rapper is like saying Greenday is the best punk band. Nah,but I can see the reasoning,it just ignores (in my opinion) the whole point and essence of the specific genres

And the best rapper used to be a person with a combination of great flow and great lyrics. Again, College Dropout is one of my favourite records of all time, but that verse you are fighting about reads like something that a ten year old would put together with crayons.

If your talent lies in producing, you are not a great rapper.

Also it's borderline criminal that Chuck D has barely been mentioned in this thread. PE made and wrote one of the greatest albums of all time, but I'm guessing that maybe 1% of the hip hop "fans" in this thread have heard it.
