Real talk is Kanye West the best rapper of all time?

Who would Neogaf actually come close to a consensus on? I've seen how Eminem threads go when Gaf-Hop starts posting in them so it wouldn't be him. People don't like Jay Z because of the second half of his career, and Nas discussion is half "Nas Lost".

So who is the answer?

If the D.O.C. hadn't gotten messed up, he would probably be my all-time GOAT. At least from a skill perspective. Dude did some crazy fast stuff, plus some deeper grooves with help from Dr. Dre.

I guess that doesn't answer the question in the OP, which is more about selling records, which--do we even need a thread for that? Can't somebody just look up lifetime sales?

I mean, yeah. Kanye is pretty famous if that's the question

EDIT
Sales is a terrible criteria because it automatically rules out all the pioneers like Chuck D or Rakim. Rap music didn't top the charts in the beginning.

yep

Again it depends on what criteria to follow. Some put way to much emphasis on sales, which i think are a factor but not that important

For me, its between Outkast and Tribe called quest. Both have amazing lyricism, unique production, no bad albums in there discography G.O?A.T album contenders, large sales and commericial appeal, unique, and huge effect on the hip hop landscape

If we are talking solo artists ? Way to many to count for me if we take away the sales aspect.

Eminem sounds like a teenager hitting puberty, too much teen angst.

Sales is a terrible criteria because it automatically rules out all the pioneers like Chuck D or Rakim. Rap music didn't top the charts in the beginning. Now you have to listen to "Hotline Bling" on every radio channel even though that song beats anything Vanilla Ice has ever done on the unintentional comedy scale.

Should correct myself, i was thinking of sales should be skightly included in a discussion of 'greatest hip hop artist of all time'

Just talking about greatest rapper overall would be difficult, but yeah i ahree sales should not be a factor in a top mc's list

It's funny too see what kind of responses that comes from this question. Kanye is either hated or loved, there is no middle ground. In terms of just rapping skills he is not even close, but in terms of the best rapping artist i can't see anybody that is bigger. There are two artist that could match him. Notorious Big and 2Pac. But if we look away from the nostalgia i don't think they reach Kanye in terms of how big he is and what he has made.

He still spits fire, but i hope that he gets his focus right so his best stuff is not what he has made in the past but what he is going to make in the future.

you straight up 100% dont know anything about hip hop if you have Lil Wayne that low

hate him or love him, jay is a top 10 rapper - that list is ridiculous

this is the best gif ive seen all week

Ennio Morricone was the hottest producer that year lol. Man when game went off on ecstacy of gold/blueprint 2...whew 🔥🔥🔥

Morricone the GOAT!

No, it's barely below Reasonable Doubt in quality, if it came out prior to the Black Album or The Blueprint people would be whining about Jay's lyricism and pop choices on those two albums, it isn't given credit because of when it came out so people want to diminish it like you just did.

nahhh, you're overrating that album just a little and tremendously underrated BP1 & Black Album (his finest works) too

I'd call Andre 3000 the GOAT before anyone else

Preach

Synthesizer, microwave me, give me a drug
So I can make seven babies pump my breasts up
Can you suck the fat up? Please make my life appear
Like ain't no such thing as bad luck

My, nose ain't right like I need a new one
Just take your pick, a yellow red a black or a blue one
Virtual reality, virtual bullshit
n Synthesizer preachers can reach you up in the pulpit

Who a bitch? Give me my gat so I can smoke this nigga
Tell his Mamma not to cry because they can clone him
Quicker than it took his daddy to make him
Niggaz bitin' verbatim

Thought provokin' records, radio never played dem
Instant, quick grits, new improved
Hurry, hurry, rush, rush, world on the move
Marijuana illegal but cigarettes cool
I might look kinda funny but I ain't no fool

Now if you wanna synthesize, I empathize
Now if you wanna synthesize, I empathize
But if you synthesize I will understand
Your synthesizer man

" best rapper of all time?
In terms of sales, accolades, influence, fame, etc"

If that's what you use as criteria for a good rapper then I feel so sorry for you.

Kanye is garbage
